Does anyone want to do masters and drive down with me on saturday?
I would do Masters 40+ if that is what you are talking about (11am start)
Yep. You're in. Car is full.I'll be in touch about departure time.
Interested in racing the Cat 4 race (at 1:40) either day if I can score a ride. Anyone going out and back and have room?
I can squeeze you in. I think I can stay. I'll have to check. See if anyone else is going first.
So Ragot is possible for Saturday. Anyone else? Sunday maybe? Grehan? Looking to make a streak of it?
@ JW

I'm going to be there both days. I have a hotel booked as well. Not sure how big the room will be but worst case scenario we can get some roll-away beds.

I'll be there on Saturday for the Cat 3 race and will probably drive down early Saturday morning.

Oh, listen to "Mr. Casual." I'll be there, whatever...

Crossresults predicts a big win for McLoughlin...and third for Perlberg. Could be another great weekend for KCC CX!
Todd 3rd
Eric 2nd. I blew it by being tactical and a very badly timed bobble.
Nice!!
Here is my report:

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Flatted out of 3rd position just past the pit with 1.5 laps to go. Fell all the way back to 20th. Not enough time to make up any spots.

Running that far is really hard.

Oh well. Get em tomorrow.

My report. I was in the last row but Jim Fehan assured me that it didn't matter because the starting road was very long. Off we go and I quickly make it to the front and slot in behind wade Hess, the former Peter of the race.

As we transition to the grass, I pass him on the right and make it to the first corner in the lead. My first holeshot victory in ages. I just keep it buried on the sandy roads, across the beach, up the stairs, umn amphitheater, and up the climbs. For two laps, long ones too, I just keep the gas on.

Eric schlauch comes through hard on a sandy road and I latch right on. And then I looked back. We were down to 4 riders! We went into the barriers soon after and the guy in third stacked it had. And then there were two.

I felt really good. I was pulling for about half laps. I was faster on the power sections and the beach when I wanted to be and was just rally reaping the benefits of actually training for CX.

I was pretty confident that eric was a bit tired and that I'd run faster than him in the amphitheater as had done all day and that I could out sprint him. So, I made him pull at the end to avoid any attacks that I didnt want to respond to. And then, I bobbled! Right before the pits and I has to unclip and push with my foot to get moving again. Instant 5 second gap and not enough time with a hill to ride up and the amphitheater to run to catch him.

When I hit the road, I went full bore but came up short. A couple more seconds and I think I would have made it back. Another lap, no problem and I would lead. But alas, 2nd.

Whirlybird next wee should be tough because I won't have a starting position.

E
Nice work Eric.

and I always suspected Wade was a Peter.

And whirlybird on the next wee is a bit arbitrary.

Way to go mike.
Congrats Mike!!
Sweet. Looks like it was a tough road race.

SCHWEET!

(but why does everyone look so CLEAN??!!)

at the start they announced - it will take at least 25 minute for results plus the 15 minute protest period, so if you podium go clean up and put on a fresh kit.

I had to get washed up for the long ride home, so I took their advice. I think we look pretty civilized.

Day 1 report:

Get a really good start, 2nd through the hole shot. Just before the beach run the leader crashes and I get tangled up. 2 guys sneak by and are never seen again - the put over a minute into the field within the first lap. They were flying.

I battle with a few guys but maintain 3rd position through some smart riding and some power.

2 or three guys are slowly reeling me in, just as I puncture. Shit. I go from 3rd to 20th. Bummer.

Day 2:

The course was run backwards with no beach run. The course was set up in such a way that it seemed like we'd have a group together for awhile.

I take the hole shot and stay in the top 3 early on. I re-take the lead on lap 2 and 2nd and 3rd crash behind me. I have a gap but it's really early and the course is fast. With over a minute on pavement, they work together to drag me back.

Lot of lead changes, probably 6 different riders took the lead at one point or another. With 1.5 to go at least 6, maybe 7 guys have a shot at the win. I bobble on a turn after taking the down hill too fast, jamming up the guy behind me. I sprint to catch up and dispatch him. There are 3 up the road and I power away and catch them. Just then, 3rd wheel attacks really hard and rides away solo. Very well timed move. I move past one guy, who had been leading, but can't catch 2nd place. Totally full gas. I hold on til the finish.

Won $50 - never won cash in cross before so that is cool.

I love this race. Next year they're going to make sure it doesn't conflict with any UCI / Holy Week races. Everyone should go!

This is a really unique course. I have been avoiding it for years because of the rumor of sand. There is lots of it. Unlike all other courses, there are no twisty, grassy bits. The course mostly consists of sandy trails through the forest, with a beach run and an incredibly steep set of stairs (4 sets 2 steps, each of which are 3-feet high). Not much elevation gain and plenty of flat out fast trails where people like Eric and Mike can gun it. Todd did pretty well too, apparently.

The sand freaked me out, though we made friends eventually. It's the kind of course that will be better next year.
I can't wait. <evil grin>  And, there is some elevation change. It's just that you quickly ride up, then down, then run up the stairs... Wait until HPCX...

I was 3rd in the Cat 3 race on Saturday.  There are good and bad things about every race, but this one was mostly good.

After a rough start, I settled into a group with Mike and two others.  We rode together for a lap or so.  One guy dropped off (crashed) the fourth time through the sand.  Mike flatted with 1.5 laps to go.  Apparently out of sympathy, I bobbled a sandy ride-up just after Mike flatted.  The bobble forced me to run the entire sandy section, maybe 20 uphill meters.  While I was running the third member of the group, a Cicli Devotion rider, blew past me and was around the next turn before I could hop back on.  I chased and slowly reeled in the Cicli Devotion rider over the next 1.25 laps.  Then, right before the final stair run and just as I was about to catch him, the Cicli Devotion rider dropped his chain.  That was all she wrote.  I rode by him and cruised in to the finish for third.  I'll take it.

If Saturday was a good day, today was not bad day.  I crashed descending Alpine this morning and, after an ambulance ride, spent the day in Columbia Presbyterian.  In the end, it's nothing serious.  I have some nice road rash, a black eye and a dislocated shoulder (the shoulder does not hurt much right now).  I smacked my face on ground pretty hard, which gave me the black eye, and necessitated the day in the hospital.  The CT scan and x-rays came out ok.  So, after some down time, I'll be fine.  Although, at one point, the doctor told me that he thought I might have broken my wrist, elbow, shoulder and eye socket.  How nice of him to let me know.  In any event, I'm home now, well bandaged and a bit sore, but none the worse for the wear.

Thankfully, I was riding with Greg Donovan this morning and he was able to take care of the wife and ambulance calling (thanks Greg).

I'll probably sit out Whirly Bird, but hope to be back the following week.
Oh wow Todd!  Don't make me cook up a Yin/Yang badge, ok?

Third in the 3's... you guys are STORMING... glad it sounds like nothing too serious.  Who took you down?  Was it that Cicli Devotion guy with a frame pump?  A kamikaze squirrel sent from ICP?  Was it that... woman who screams at everybody?  You just say the word and we'll show them what happens when you crash "The Todd" when he's on raging CX form...

It was a GD tree branch (approx. 2" diameter and 8" long).  Apparently, it was wearing an invisibility cloak.  I never saw it.

If Saturday was a good day, today was not bad day.
If going to the hospital is several hours of a not bad day, the riding or Donovan's company or both must have been awesome.

Klingon then for sure.  We're on it...

hbolick race report:
masters 50+, 40min, 9:00am

67dF, cool, misty;

500m tarmac prolog from start grid to 1st turn onto undulating, woodsy/rooty, sandy&2mi course w/2 barrier lifts 18", amphitheater carry/(16)steps 24"ea., (1)sharp short hill, (1)dirt bump/barrier, 25m sandy beach carry/run &200m tarmac sprint finish.

CX AIR PRESSURE !
arrived NOT early, time for pin-up, air pressure inquiry and fortunately/unfortunately (1)lap pre-ride after the cat4/5's 8am start, (note1 2cx newbies: can pre-ride course just after the winner of the preceding race passes the start/finish) a local rider suggested air pressure for this course would be best ridden w/a bit more pressure than some CX courses (ie. last weeks grassy HillTownCX course 28psi clinchers @65kg/146lb) bis suggestion was for between 30-35psi; so, i set tires @33psi - &later further inquired of mPerlberg who suggested to utilized the "thumb test" for CX air pressure (ie. place thumb on tread w/other hand on top lean on w/full body weight& when your thumb can touch the rim air pressure is about right for one's weight to achieve good CX traction, this is a good) which i was to learn, that like fly fishing&race day tires one should make adjustments according to local conditions! &perhaps local's recommendations.

so, i flatted in the last 3rd of my pre-ride lap.

(note2 cx newbies - either bring a back-up bike "veryPro" or set of wheels, more affordable, for the 'pit' in case of mechanicals/flat s).

so, minor panic, with 6min to race start, a) could i change my tire in time or b) is/was there a wheel to borrow?

i saw jimFreehan's back-up bike in the pit, &Jim @on the starting grid, so, i inquired "i could borrow his rear tire from his back-up bike?" he said he had a spare wheel in his car, he dashed to his car &retrieved his wheel, i quickly changed wheel&lined up, superGreatful to start!

THANK YOU, JIM!!!

the pre-ride fore-told 2principal course aspects: 1) this is a HARD *%#•! COURSE! & 2) DANGER lurks in roots/sand&amphitheaters! this course was Xtimes more challenging than my 1st 'hillTown.'

race start! 500m of tarmac to 1st corner&i am already 5th from last, 1/2 field has passed me in this sprint to turn1, 3turns later i&re-join the pack as they slow to navigate the chicane (6-8turns in succession) sprint2 onto long hardpacked sandy forrest trail, distanced again, maintained some contact for 1.5 laps &seeminy regained ground in technical areas by end of lap2 knew i was i trouble as contemplated my view of Dan Strika and this report ah perhaps i should discribe my race as a 'worms eye view' and tell of how lovely DanS lifts and runs with his red bicycle...'see how DanS disappears off into the woods' BELL LAP! thankyou bell...perhaps i will finish afterALL. tried to hold off one last rider in my field trading places at each turn, then i wrongly tried to best him in the chicanes and was cut-off, went down hard, popped-back-up in time to see him disappear into the woods;

well, finally bell lap &two of the women's field caught me, one passing convincingly the other holding my pace into final amphitheater climb, then passing me, w/me passing back on the final 200m 2sprint...ha take that!:-)

BiG THANKs 2jimF 4wheel...btw, found @finish i did not in fact have a twig in rear spoke since lap2, rather, my1st broken spoke&a substantial break rub w/deformation of wheel.

i o jimF BiGTime!
crazy strong 'ol dude('ol like me) strong like OX n CX!

funny: 4laps, 8mi, 38.5min, 12.5avg, &365calories?...really? 365?, felt like 3.65k calories!?!

yikes! that was a brutal course!...

shoutOuts 2 jimFreehan, danStriker, dStokes& especially to eRagot, toddMcLoughlin&mPerlberg, who tore-up this course and really lead through most of both their races, bk Orange-Train(s) in SoJersey!!!!
