I'm so down for the R&A Prospect Park series. I'd be so much more comfortable racing there than Prospect Park. Next weekend I"m in Philly for a wedding shower but I'm taking my bike and doing a long ride there Sunday. Super down for weekday riding (7-8am starts anyone?) especially with repeats in Center Drive.
I'm not a MD so I can't legally recommend you take any meds including OTC pain killers like Tylenol/Advil etc., but you know...read the labels, follow their instructions, read the warnings, and don't take Advil on an empty stomach; and they could help.

I'm a Ph.D. so you can't even sue me for medical advice. But I would like to remind you about recent press warning against how easy (and dangerous) it is to overdose on acetaminopein (tylenol). I personally prefer naproxen sodium (aleve) as each dose lasts for 12 hr. It is a COX2 inhibitor, same as ibuprofen (advil), so side effects of chronic usage include heart disease and stomach ulcers. But for occasional use or for acute injury I take my chances. Aspirin is, of course, a no-no because of anti-coagulatory behavior. Ice is the best, but probably not practical for ribs. As Marc says, don't take ibuprofen or naproxen on an empty stomach. A glass of milk is an excellent buffer.
Now that I got everyone all concerned, update is that I took Mereditith's recommendation (thanks!) and everyone's advice and got a quick X-ray at an urgent care. I can report that there are no obvious fractures, so I'm cleared to carry on as is tolerable. Good to go! Thanks everyone for the feedback and advice, it was worth the peace of mind to just do it.
tomorrow? anyone?

I so wanted to do it tomorrow, but I'm still pretty sore and have another event next week, can't risk another fall.  Good luck!!  I'll totally do the next one with you!
@annamaria me for tomorrow (as you know)! I've been checking the weather and it looks a little rainy so fingers crossed it blows over before we race. If anyone else is coming from BK we can all ride up together. I mentioned that Jeff A can lead us up...but he also got us slightly lost coming home from CP last night so I might want to go a little earlier than 5AM to make sure I have plenty of time to get up there.
I'm signed up for tomorrow, and also crossing my fingers it won't be raining during the race.

@Paige: Earlier than 5 AM is a little nuts, but I could swing by your neck of the woods by 5:15 since it's on the way. I'll email you.

@Anna Maria: Are you in too? Please say yes.

@Emily: Smart lady sitting this one out if you're still sore. Glad to hear you went in for an X-ray and that there wasn't serious damage. Nevertheless, best to stay low for a bit!

How'd it go, ladies?!
It was raining, so we all bailed. Just not worth the risk.

I know this is the CRCA thread but anyone doing the R&A this Saturday?

Overall: Lots of fun!  My main goal was to just hang with the group and not be the squirreliest wheel out there.

I just remembered the best (or maybe worst?) part of my weekend.  Riding down River Road on Saturday, I catch a tiny blur on the road to my right, feel a thump under my bike, keep going, and look behind me to see a squirrel tumble to its feet and bolt like lightning to the other side of the road.  I LITERALLY have the squirreliest wheel out there.

I can only hope he made it through okay after that.

Add this to the list of reasons I think @Erika's flying-squirrel jersey, which I was wearing, has special/curious powers.  (P.S. I will give you monies for the jersey next time I see you, Erika).
Oh, and @Meredith, Marc added your R&A question to the R&A race thread, so I think people will respond there if not here.
I know this is the CRCA thread but anyone doing the R&A this Saturday?

Cross posting from the Women's Team thread because I forgot this thread existed...

My first race report (and my first race ever) so i'll keep it short and sweet. I did the CRCA Women's Development Series Cat 4 race this morning in CP. I was pretty nervous but ended up having a lot of fun. There were about 30 women signed up in my field, although I'm not sure how many actually made it out to race (seemed like a decent amount though). We got off to a faster start than I expected and I started the race in a terrible position (wedged to the far right off the back and stuck behind a girl who couldn't seem to clip in properly) but I was able to grab on to the back of the pack and then improved my position so I didn't risk getting dropped the first time up harlem hill. Climbing is not my strong suit. I held on through all 4 laps consistently near the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the field and somehow was coming into the final stretch of the race at the front of the pack for a brief and wonderous moment...before I realized I had jumped the gun and gotten out ahead before the actual final sprint started. Long story short, I bonked out on the sprint about halfway through and ended up finishing near the back (not sure final position but I imagine I was 2nd or 3rd to last). That being said, I felt really good throughout the entire race and think that if I had held back for just a few seconds longer I could have finished in a much better position. So - good to know for next time I guess!
Report on the August 9th race:

Headed out at an ungodly hour, only after intercepting my roommate, who was just getting home from the bar (!), and rode to CP with Ingrid.

Short version: Fun. Dropped. Oof. (Pretty much in that order)

Long version: Botched my clip-in and as a result started at the back of the pack.  I improved my position a couple times, but wasn't able to maintain it for long (improvement opportunity #1).  It seemed that we were very strung out at times, and I would end up in no mans land (no draft land) to the side of the string, eventually falling back to catch a wheel.

Also, I suck at cornering (improvement opportunity #2).  You know how Zoolander can't turn left?  I can't turn right!  I know it's common to have a dominant side and preferred direction, and I noticed how pronounced this was at the S curve toward the north end of the park.  I was very uncomfortable leaning to the right and as a result had to break more and swing wider than I should have.  So, I would lose momentum, fall behind, and have to chase back on to the group, which meant that I was already losing steam going into the biggest climb, where normally I might have been able to make gains.  This happened every lap, and by the third time I couldn't hang on, and got dropped shortly after.  I have the lungs of an endurance runner, whodathunk (improvement opportunity #3, V02!!!).

Once I was alone I got disoriented and was confused about where I was in relation to the finish.  I do not know CP (improvement opportunity #4). It shouldn't be possible to get lost on a loop, but if you know me, it's possible.

Another learning experience.  Strava reassured me that my personal level of effort was at least pretty solid (high suffer score - threshold HR and above for the majority).  And it was good to meet Ingrid and test the CP waters together.  She did great. I was sad to miss the Piermont ride, but nagging knee issues held me back.  Went to the beach instead.  Life is hard.  Said a brief hello to Kissenas in CP, and gave a quick wave to the BB group as I made my way home on the west side path.

I think this time next year I'll be stronger and smarter, so will file this under "character building".

Bad photo, but proof that I was in the mix for a bit.  (You can always spot me by the orange duct tape on my left handlebar).

Also, I just noticed that neither Ingrid or I were on the initial race roster or the race results provided by CRCA.  Seems weird, since we were both preregistered and had bib numbers waiting for us at sign-in.  Hmm.

The dates are set for this great series:

That should help you focus on the trainer during the next 2 months.
You're racing in March!
