Enjoy.  This is an unlisted video for the enjoyment of Kissena.  Please don't forward.

Granogue. JUST DO IT
A pre season, pre granogue report.

In the trailer for Transitions, Adam Myerson voices over a struggling muddy Mark McCormack "one last cult, one more little punk rock click to belong to, you know, cyclocross"

I woke up on Sunday October 17, 2009 5:00am to torrential rain, just wanted to stay home, racing was gonna suck, who wants to start a race in this already hardcore rain, it will be a mud fest, it is so nice here in this bed.

It rained the whole drive over.

I knew I wouldn't do well, there was mud everywhere, cars were getting stuck simply trying to park.

I was up for the 35+

Race starts, my legs feel bad, my driving is ugh, slip sliding is maybe kinda fun, but this is really not working. Feel like shit. This is gonna be shit. Ian Landau is there, riding for kissena, he goes hunting and gets the holeshot! -- at least one good note.

First time climbing up to the tower, Anthony Skorochod, the photographer, seems surprised to recognize me, starts cheering, but with a confused look on his face, why is Eloy so far back?!?

Eventually the top 55+ guys catch me -- they started a minute behind -- makes me wonder even more... why am I, with with a good job, a wife at home, why am I doing this, who cares, what difference does it make if I'm here...

The two top 55+ guys were Mike Connair and Richard Sachs, fighting hard for the win. I jump on their wheel, and ride behind them for most of a lap. They are racing hard, passing each other every corner. I am, in contrast, completely defeated.

On a 180 super muddy rooty corner around a tree, Richard Sachs goes down and crashes hard. All the same thoughts enter my mind, why is Richard, a legend, one of the top cycling names in the world, why is he here, this is miserable. He is now all scraped up, and totally gapped and dropped. Surely, he doesn't need this...

But then Richard got up, grabbed his bike, with complete and super sharp determination. And I saw it, it all clicked. It all made sense.

Because this is punk. Because this is hardcore.

Go Richard!!

It was amazing to witness. Complete inspiration: Immediately, my back got straight, my pedaling smooth and fast, my cornering flowed, I started passing riders... eventually dropped both Connair and Sachs.

Richard, of course, won the 55+.

Granogue has the most classic of holeshots, we'll go power fast uphill to a very clear transition from smooth asphalt to grass. Those racing tomorrow should recognize that moment. If you allow it, you too, will know exactly why you are there.

Go race.

that was hard fun.

Patrick looked like the hotness, dropping me hardcore. Harry looked like the hotness, almost catching me at the end.

20 minutes in I was, like no way. It hurt so stupid much. And still, I wanna go back and do it all over right now.

Took a few photos of the lead elite women:

That whole race is the Hotness. Pity about the mud.
oh, I forgot, there was a flyover, which had absolutely no purpose whatsoever. otherwise awesome.

I believe we now know the reason for the flyover...awesome photos of that momentary pause before gravity starts to take hold and that fleeting thought of "if this goes wrong it's gonna hurt."

Until it rains. Then it's just diabolical...
Granogue registration is open.

The 2017 course

Racers! we have a new start along Irenee's driveway, intersecting the Greenhouse. The run-up is back but also the ride down. You'll see 2X the action on Hostetter Heckle Hill. The barriers return to bunnyhop position at the base of the Slalom. We'll ride behind the Greenhouse for a bit. The Tower off-cambre is in reverse and the finish is on grass. But the runup will be the decider. We hope you can join us this Saturday for the Madison team relay on half the course & Sunday for the full cross spectacle. **Pre-reg closes on Wednesday. ** The DCCoD has worked hard setting up the course to bring you a great opening weekend of cross goodness at Granogue.

(Pre-reg closes in a few hours, come race)
Patrick and I started our 2017/18 CX Campaign at Granogue.

Event of the day is some dude that has a heart attack in the main parking area, other racers (and a few New Yorkers, Patrick, Lucia, Mark Steffan, etc..) kept him alive via CPR and basic not giving up until ambulances showed up. Dude is expected to make a full recovery

Sure puts everything else in perspective.
  • pre-ride with Patrick, he gaps me in almost every corner
  • Also: super muddy slip n slide every where
  • Start was changed, doesn't use the asphalt, kinda downhill, after a long strech a quick left up to the tower
  • Have a decent start, definitely climbing better than those around me
  • Patrick looks like the hotness, slowly but surely riding away
  • The runup is hard. I can still feel it on my legs
  • Battle with some guys, they are catching me on all the cyclocrossey mountain bikey parts, I am destroying them on the climbs
  • Feeling good with 2 to go: Punch it!
  • My body responds: No, dude, what you thinking?!?! and all the pains I was not feeling 5 minutes ago are killing me now!!
  • Patrick 14ish, Me 24ish.
  • Felt worlds better than I thought I would
  • Did not hit the deck, but need tonna work on the skillzzz!!
  • A little peeved that they applied the 80/20 rule for masters. Half the field was stopped at 1 to go. I get it on a very muddy day, but at the same time, we did not get lapped (wasn't even close), and most riders around me (and me) would have finished at 50~52 minutes which seems totally reasonable for a 45 minute event.
  • It is amazing how much these races hurt, but as soon as they are over, I just wanna go do it again right now!
  • Got a new heart rate threshold email from TP
  • Let's go race some more!
Later, Jess and I got Delaware Tacos, checked out Longwood Gardens on Patrick's recommendation, had lobster ravioli at a cool NJ dry town, spent the night at the Rowan University Campus, and Monday summer weather at a sweet beach north of Ocean City.

New 2018 Course!

The map is not great, but clear enough, looks like almost opposite direction from year's past. we still climb to the tower, but might be a bit longer and more gradual.

I feel like I've done it this way before...?
Quite possible, I am sure I have too, specially when the race was two days. if I remember there was one year where Eric Robertson and Ragot finished 1st and 2nd (and I was like maybe top 20) in the 35+
So once again Patrick, Jim Feehan, and myself started our 2018/19 Cyclocross campaign at Granogue.
  • Does not occur to me to check my tubulars until the night before, only one front holds.
  • Let's race with one front tubular and one clincher rear. hotness.
  • Ride up with Patrick, we get there super early, little bits of rain on the way there, it'll be slick and perhaps a little muddy
  • We get to pre-ride a few times
  • It did full on rain on one of those pre-rides, but slowly it started to get warmer, humid and sunnier, course got drier, tackier, grippier, but still very muddy by the woods and run-up close to where the cars park.
  • Jim is lined up towards the front -- MAC points! -- Patrick 4th row, myself 5th row, nemesis Barry Jones close by
  • Let's go!
  • I have a so so start moment, Patrick, Jim and Barry get away quickly
  • I keep at it.
  • Eventually bump into Jim at the mud, takes me a while and lots of fight to pass him
  • Keep at it
  • Will eventually catch and pass Patrick and Barry too
  • My first 3 full laps are super solid, but kinda back pain take over later on, and mentally got a little disorganized on the last 3 laps
  • Crazy humid race, at some point I was so completely 100% soaked in sweat, everything was wet, to the point were shifting was hard as the fingers would slip on the shifters
  • Jim and eventually Barry pass me back
  • I felt my fitness, general race decisions, and flow were solid.
  • After my fastest 5k ever earlier in the year, stopped running around May. It showed today, the run up was a weakness. Gotta get back on it.
  • In all, a good first race
Later, Patrick and I get good food truck foods, say hi to all the puppies, and go hunting for a car wash to clean the mud off the bikes.

Let's go race bikes!

Any time your hand sweat gets in the way of your shifting... HOTNESS

Also, forgot to include a screenshot of the power distribution for the race, and mention that I got yet another HR threshold alert from TP.
