I just registered for the 1/2/3 on Sunday.

There's little on the website about the race or the series.  But it's the short course.  And it's a race.

I'm currently one of two registered.  There are another five in the 4/5, and three in the cat 5.

JP and I in the 123...Smallish field...wind...brutally painful first 4 laps...settled into pain......a jumbled mess catching the IV field on their bell lap...told not to pass them...paused...others don't...field splits...JP and I caught behind...battery dies on head unit...chase a little...3 to go...peel off...hop rollers...grab a coffee and watch JP finish...Now with a power file...300 watt avg = good for a first race but need to put some more hay in the barn   https://www.strava.com/activities/510265874

I mean technically the refs should have DQ'd the guys who passed the other field when specifically told not to, but we know how that goes.  

Also, windy days (every day at FBF) = shallow rims?

I've found the wide carbon clincher wheels aren't affected as much by the wind as the carbon tubulars I've owned....larger contact patch & that bullet rim profile may be the reason why??  At Floyd I'm almost always in my drops trying to stay as aero as possible, this makes controlling deep wheels easier as well.      Also they called out the finishing lap for the IV field a lap early....so I saw their field sprint into a bell lap = 1 more lap to go...needless to say they weren't happy.  Horace reminded them that accidents happen and that no bell = no finish so always listen for the bell.  Ultimately he threatened to stop buying the post race coffee & donuts if people didn't stop complaining, things quieted down after that.

It was cold...registration is notoriously slow....so my rollers were the village bicycle...everyone gets a ride...Yeah Baby !!!

It's funny for me to think that my 46mm deep wheels are shallow, but I guess they are these days.

I think the right deep dish rims should have been no problem yesterday.  Several years ago, I had a set of Zipps, which were 58-60mm deep out there without issue.  Then again, a guy from the HH team was on 80mm deep or so and he was blown around some, but he could have been just a bad bike handler.

What Yack wrote.  FBF is never a way to "ease" into the season.  Sure enough, the attacks came from the start.  I was a bit too aggressive early on, but I don't think that's what cost me in the end.

Yes, the elastic was going to snap.  I was concerned that it wouldn't be the big dig that did it, but a small one that just kind of crept away until it was too late.  

My first ten minutes were at 289w average, or 302w normalized.  We definitely slowed a good bit after that, but we were still in the mix until we were told not to lap the 4's as the field was splitting anyways.  The pace car should have slowed, but didn't, and the few moments of confusion and freewheeling turned out to be the decisive moment of the race.

We ended up on the wrong half of the split.  and I think I was probably the strongest of that.  With three to go, suddenly, I realize there are five of us left.  We weren't going to catch the lead group, which was probably twice our size.  I wanted to win the rest, and it seemed like Tony Taylor (Jordan) and Euri Madera (fusion) were the main threats.  But Euri was pointless skipping pulls.  Couldn't tell if he was weak or just trying to ensure his sprint still had punch.  On the last lap, I tried to, get myself to the back without skipping a pull--varying the length of my pull, but it wasn't working.  And I was focused on Tony, and had him in front of me.  only his pull ended just as we rounded the final corner.  

With the wind coming from the left, I stayed right to make sure that not everyone could shelter.  I probably should have moved over even farther so no one could shelter, but the cones narrowed the course in the final meters and I didn't want to deal with that.  I didn't hammer, I didn't soft-pedal, I just kept a 90 cadence and below threshold.  I figured I'd jump the moment I saw someone coming alongside.  The guy on my wheel jumped first. Then Euri.  I caught and passed the first guy, but couldn't pull alongside Euri.  

Nice to wet my beak by guzzling a gallon.  It's never easy at Floyd, but I feel ready for Grant's.

I think I'm going to give Floyd Bennett a shot this weekend. Never done it before. Anyone else interested? Is there a fee for day-of reg?

David et al,

     I'm hoping you will skip this event (unless it's raining) and come to the track to practice leadouts, sprinting, etc.  There's a thread for the discussion.

     I love me some Floyd, but this kind of practice now sets everyone up for better results for the rest of the season.

I am sure FBF is under 2-3 inches of standing water right now. Not pleasant to ride out there today.

Didn't feel like parking my front wheel in a ten inch pot hole today..I figure I have the rest of the season to show everybody how much I suck....
