Congrats Michael, and great riding with everyone!
Does anyone know if there are any extra cat 5 spots for the July 17 race. Happy to help with registration.
I'm talking with Charlie the Cat 5 section is closed. Thanks, @ColinStief couldn't have done it without that epic leadout you gave me
Soooooooo sick, congrats Michael! Also looking at comments on Strava, sounds like Colin gave a great lead out. So cool to see actual team tactics going down and being successful. Congrats to all!
Thanks Robert, yes big thanks to Colin. Supporting one another is what I hope to do for others as well.
@LamboMDC787 Happy to help out! but it was you that got it done in the end!  It was very fun to have such a big group in the race. Please let me know if anyone hears about any of the cat 5 spots coming available for Castelli or L&C.
BUMP

Charlie really needs volunteers for Saturday’s race. He only has 2 volunteers and needs at least 6. He has slots reserved for volunteers so if you want to race and the race is sold out this is your ticket in (or make a couple bucks if you don’t want to race)!

These races have our club name on them and can’t happen without the club supporting them, so please sign up if you’re able!

@Matt Budofsky

I think you mean the L&C cup this Saturday.  I believe Castelli is next Saturday
@mugwump that's correct (charlie sent me the wrong sign up link). Cross posting in the L&C thread.

Volunteer bandwagon keeps on moving!! Charlie is looking for volunteers for this Saturday’s (July 17th) castelli series race! You know the deal, either 1 free race (can be used day of if you missed registration or want your registration fee reimbursed or later on) or cold hard cash!

@Matt Budofsky signed up to help out this Saturday morning. What time do I have to be there?
5am!

Full field.  John Loehner is there to keep the speed high.  Jerry Kapko of Wonder Wheel is there for everything.  Lynn Murray of Ride Ya Bike is the sprinter probably has complete support from Tony Taylor and maybe from his teammates.  Stephen Dioslaki has the Brands team.  Axis' Danny Inoa is probably there for the KoM sprints.  Mark Light of ProPower could be a threat as well.

Since this is following a field-sprint race, I'm feeling like this could be breakaway day.  Still, many of the same people are here as at the last Castelli Cup race.  And breaks didn't do anything there.

Meet up at Konditori after?

Heard good things out of the Cat 5 race today! (No spoilers 😉). Anyone have any podium or race pics???

Not sure that spoilers apply here ;) but yeah the cat 5 crew really killed today.

Reports please!!!
Let's see...

Eloy, Jeff Condon, and I lined up for the Master's race. (Joe?  Steven?)  Full field.

tl/dr:  Eloy 36th, Jeff 33rd, JP 17th.

*Expected breakaway action.  There were more attacks, for sure.
*Speed was a bit higher than last time.  Damped the attacks.
*There were pauses and then accelerations before the intermediate sprints.
*Jeff was looking good.  positioning well.
*Several guys were going for the KoM.  I wasn't quite on their level for uphill sprinting.
*Jeff offered to bring me to the front on the last lap.  This was a great offer.
*At about three to go, a group of around 10 was hanging off the front.  It was just the kind of move which might slowly roll away.  I bridged to it. but the field shortly thereafter closed in.  I rolled past it just before the downhill, hoping to tempt people on the flats.
*Nope.   The field brought me back.
*Start of last lap, there were two yellow jerseys at the front.  I think the 2-3 leader was mixing in with our field.
*I picked the left side on the flats.  And got stuck behind the wrong people.
*I moved to the right, just as the hill started.  Still had a wrong person in front of me.  When I got around him, I moved up to around 20th.
*then I was blocked by too many bodies.
*when finally, I saw daylight, I spun up to take a few more places.

26.5mph average speed.  Faster than the last Masters race.  Not as fast as the last 1-2-3.

Looking forward to the 5 race report.  Sounded like teamwork was performed.  well.
Sounds like you have good legs JP, just not picking the right sides/moves. Keep hammering.
Not much to add. Quick masters report:
  • Jeff and JP looked sharp
  • Pretty sure I was ahead of them for exactly zero meters
  • Mid packing it hotness
  • Still felt much better than previous 2021 races
  • At 42.6 km/h (26.5 mph) it is the fastest Masters race I've ever recorded on Strava. Notice the same statement last race.
  • Friday's Look Sharp openers totally take some credit for Colin and Andrew killing the 5s.
Let's go race bikes!

Cat 5 race Saturday July 17, 2021

1. Colin Stief
5. Andrew O'Sullivan
11. Michael Cumming
16. Diego Sanchez
35. Sonay Aykan (first race)
40. Adam Yaffe
52. SAnat Valecha

FWIW, here's Colin's short report on Strava

Stayed in the pack and tried to watch for moves on the last lap. Hopped on Michael’s wheel at the bottom of the hill and followed him up to bridge to a small group going around the last turn. Stayed on Andrew’s wheel until the sprint opened up! Great rides by the kcc crew, and finished with 2 in the top 5.

Here's Andrew's

Led out Colin for 1st, and I placed 5th.

Kissena consistently had someone riding near the front of the peloton. Michael was working to provide a safe wheel for those looking to move up. There were a couple of attempts to make a break, but they were always brought back and it was a bunch sprint.

Here's Michael's

From the start I had set my sights on setting my teammates up for a good position to finish in the race. My goal was to lead out my teammates to bring it home since I’ve done that before. This would be my last race in Cat 5 as I would move up to Cat 4 in road. Mission was super successful my two teammates who I helped out got 1st and 5th! Super stoked for Colin and Andrew who pulled it through. During the race had a close call with an individual who didn’t know how to use his eyes and look before moving over, nearly into me luckily I showed him a bit of elbow and kept away from him as the race progressed. Bridged a breakaway by Sanba riders in the 3rd lap and led the peloton during the 4th lap. Provided a solid lead for Colin at the end of the last lap going up the hill, who mentioned that I looked like I was “cruising up the hill” at speed 😈. Kissena gets the win in the end. Happy to see my teammates succeed

Hi all,

Sorry for the late post here!
I missed registration and thought I had signed up to help for registration the morning of so I could get a free race. I arrived at the park at 5 to help out, when Charlie let me know that he never received my submission.... after making me sweat for a bit, he let me get a new number and Matt added me to the list.
Before every race I tell my self to be patient and not make any drastic moves, but this was the first race I think I was successful. I just sat in the middle of the group and made sure I never fell to far back. Michael and Andrew were working at the front of the pack for a while and kept control of anyone trying to go up the road.
On the last lap, I moved up to about the first third and found Michael just before going up the hill. We gave each other a little, "here we go" before Michael led the charge up the hill. A little past the middle of the hill we were pulling in front of the group on our way to bridge up to Andrew's small group of about 5 that had broken away. I sat on Andrew's wheel going around the final corner. The guy in the front of the group (finished third) looked to be on his limit and frantically looking over his shoulder hoping no one was coming. I rode into Andrew's wheel and opened up my sprint on the straight... My HR was over 200 and for a moment forgot where the finish was, or if it was even the last lap, really anything. It took me a couple of seconds to realize I had won and looked back to celebrate with Andrew. It was so great to have the team around to have a friendly wheel at the very least, but even better when they are pulling you to the finish.

It was my first podium finish. and there were a couple of other firsts that might of contributed.
  • First race in Prospect with shaved legs... Definitely makes you faster
  • Some real good openers the morning before
  • Had time for a full warm up lap.
  • Had a couple of beers the night before?
Congratulations Colin! Winning races is never easy but if history is any prediction the guys who can sprint to win in the 5's remain very competitive in the faster categories.
Congrats!! So fun hearing about these results from you all.

You kid, but I really think there’s something to racing well when your evening/ morning are not “ideal” race prep. I think one of my best cross results came the night after my first date with my now parter where I had a few beers and a hamburger with fries.

Maybe it’s something like “well things weren’t perfect in the build up to this race, let’s just give it a go because it doesn’t matter”. Or enjoying yourself and having a nice evening is good for racing? Makes no sense.
First of all, congrats go in order to Colin for pulling out that epic win and Andrew as well for stunting up front as well helping me out and working together to stay upfront and with the field.

To start off I knew like JP said I'd have a target on my back since podiuming the previous three races. Started off mid-pack but quickly found myself upfront and decided to work with it for a bit. Going into the second lap I led for a little bit.

At some point, one Sanba flies up on the right of the peloton, and two more Sanba riders went upfront with one who I knew Walter Alvarado sitting at the front of the main peloton and the two Sanba riders breaking away. I knew the tactic right there was to hold off the peloton while the two Sanba riders held their breakaway. Once I saw that happen I decided to bridge the gap and hopefully bringing riders with me as backup, pushed hard to close the gap, and indeed others did following by the start of the 4th lap the gap had been closed.

It was at that point I'd be working with Andrew on the 3rd lap leading up front and pulling back the Sanba riders.

At the last lap, it was the usual increase of spicy action. Going into the last quarter of the lap kept up with the peloton and ensuring that I could hang in there till the finish. I didn't have the legs to stick with everyone upfront but got Colin behind me (didn't know till after the race) but got through and gave it all I had till the end. Apparently, my effort up the hill on the last lap rewarded Colin in the end helping him get to the front, taking the win! Couldn't have asked for more as Colin provided the same for me the last quarter of the lap on the June 19th race.
Bump!

Saturday is the next race.  Register now.

I won't make it.  I'm out for this weekend and next Saturday, for a family trip.

It would be explained in detail on Sunday. This is a paid role.
