Hey all - in an interesting alignment of the stars, I am attending a conference in Pittsburgh five days after I have a meeting in D.C.

You know what I’m thinking…

Great Allegheny Passage!
October 18th-22nd
~65-80 mile days

If you haven’t read my ride report, the GAP is a 320ish mile gravel trail connects Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh. There are primitive campsites all along the trail, ample potable water supplies, and the terrain is pretty tame - you’d be 100% fine on a cross bike, and I’ve even seen people ride it on a road bike with 28s. If you’ve been tempted to get into Bikepacking, it’s a great ride to start with!

I’m curious:
If I were to arrange for us to be picked up in Pittsburgh at the end of the ride (you can easily get to D.C. with your Bike on Amtrak) who among you would be interested in coming on a little ADVENTURE?

After yesterday's race I jetted upstate for some apple picking and hanging out at my daughter's grandparent's bungalow in the Catskills.

Took the cross bike with the intention of riding a dirt road that I had heard about that traverses the Shwangunk ridge basically from downtown Ellenville into Minnewaska State Park and eventually almost to New Paltz.

Headed out just as the sun rose and the rain started but it was warm and the colors were gorgeous. I got down into Ellenville and found the start of the dirt. The first mile or so was a consistent 10% grade that was fully rideable.

Then the "road" started to devolve and it was 50/50 hike a bike and riding.

By this time I was debating whether to turn around or hope the surfaces got better. Then I saw this guy and decided to cut my losses and try another time on a mountain bike.

Ended up going a little ways up the valley, stopped for a quick coffee at Peter's Market (left a giant puddle around their coffee station - sorry!) and then turned back up the ridge on the other side towards home.

Awesome way to spend a Sunday morning.

Gil, whom some of you met on a new member ride is organizing NYCC's ESCAPE NEW YORK https://nycc.org/eny — E P I C, 1 day, out'n-back ride.

If we want to field a team, there's an early front start for racing teams.

From Gil...
Last year we had guys from  Foundation, Patch, Wyld Stallyns, e2Value, RBNY and a bunch of other teams.

Need a commitment to minimum number of riders is based on an honor system but we really need the minimum amount of riders so we can give the discount and still have enough left from the tickets to contribute to the Kids Ride Club and I Challenge Myself.

Some pics from last year and the route preview are attached. If you are interested, email me back and I’ll set you up with the cods ASAP.

[UPDATE WITH DISCOUNT CODE] Thanks to Gil, Kissena's can get the max 20% discount for the team. The coupon code is KISSENA63 . it applies to regular tickets (no jersey bundles). Prices go up again on July 31th.

The URL for registration is: https://www.enynycc.org/#register

Best,
Gil

I hope to see you on the road!

I am interested!
As the covid crisis's (hopeful) end is near and most likely no racing, I am planning on getting straight weird with a multi-day bike pack touring extravaganza.  My tour destinations I have in mind are something like Burlington VT and back, around 800ish miles, or Florida and fly home, around 1300ish miles. It would be either an 7 day or 10 day format. Definitely having some friends on this would make the miles 1. more enjoyable, 2. way safer 3. even more memorable. Theres no dates set out right now but I am open to suggest, as well with potential destinations.
Point of note , the covid crisis , is not nearing its end in Florida , number are rising there steadily
But love the idea
@Mark Taylor noted Florida is now out of the plan. We could do tour de new York as I have friends who are scattered although WNY.
I believe this is the place for this. My biking buddy and I are looking to get into a bikepacking intro adventure within the next month. Ideally a single-night ordeal within an hour drive or ride-able from Manhattan.

Any suggestions re: routes, camping spots, bags, gear, etc. ?

(P.S. @cpulvidente, lol @ that June 9th post :/ )
check out 718 cyclery , they do overnight trips to bear mountain would be fun to go with others

Haha. I wish this could've come to fruition. Maybe I'll do a boulder to NYC ride.
Head out to the north fork of long island, stay overnight at Wildwood state park, drink some local wine, head to the sound, maybe even loop around Montauk and ride back through the tony neighborhoods of the Hamptons...
You didn't hear it from me, but there are tons of places in Harriman where a discretely hidden bike and tent would raise no eyebrows. Even though officially you are only allowed to camp at the designated shelters and bikes are not allowed anywhere near them, I have camped all over that park and never had an issue. Do not ride on the trails where bikes are not allowed and do not start a fire if you are not near a shelter and you should be fine. Another option in the park is to  ride to Beaver Pond campground off season (not sure when it officially closes to car camping). I camped there once on New Years Day and had no issues. You just can't drive in.
Clarence fahnstock state park .3 mile ride from Coldspring, bike trails all over.camp where u want, you just have to be 100 yards from a designated trail. I like using a bivy or hammock, saves weight and easy setup but you have zero privacy so if gonna be near other campers a tent might be best. Also Oct 1st is opening day for hunting so research where you go,before you go,and maybe have a blaze orange vest handy, only $6 and weigh nothing, so you dont get shot while biking/hiking thru the park. I camp all the time and never had issue with hunters so dont be scared off.
Nyc adventure cycling club, has a decent website for ideas and holds over night group rides (outside of covid times)
I have a campsite reserved next weekend (10/2-4) at Hither Hills in Montauk  Planning on biking the area, hanging on the beach, and cooking out.

Anyone interested in joining me can message me directly in Slack as there is limited room at site. Covid is still with us so we would have to maintain social distancing, wear masks, and sleep in separate tents, etc.

Could be fun
NYC group head to CT

I'm wanting to plan a 3 - 4 day bikepacking trip from NYC / Westchester area to Hillsdale, NY (Great Barrington).  Any recommendations for some good resources to plan the route to stay on as much dirt possible?  My knowledge of NY essentially stops north of Bear Mountain  :# .  This would be the end of June / 1st week of July.

Any tips greatly appreciated (as well as any interested parties:) ), thanks!
I think I heard of some guy who wrote a book on local routes. His name escapes me...
Thanks @Jules, but I'm going a bit farther north :)

Alright, so here is an initial pass at what I think is a decent 3 night / 4 day route, starting from Hartford (I'd take Amtrak from NYC to Hartford) going through MA on the XMAT to VT, then back down through the Berkshires into Chatham, about 5 miles from Hudson, NY which has an Amtrak station.

Open to suggestions / comments / good places to camp as I plan this from afar!
