High Point Hill Climb

Any Kissena interest in this uphill TT? I've never raced it, but I'd like to someday. Maybe 2017 is the year?

I used to do this every spring as a tuneup. It's a fun course, and hard. Long drive though for a 25 minute race.
Here is a (very) old race report to whet your beak... #ymmv

The drive to High Point is almost 2 hours from Brooklyn, during which the "46 degree" factor and driving rain had plenty of time to demoralize me.

By the time we had registered at the top (read, end) of the climb, people were scattering to try and get down the hill so they could warm up near the start.  The idea of spending an hour warming up only to waste it all on a super cold descent didn't get anyone very excited.

With 60 minutes to go I started my drive down the mountain... the WRONG SIDE of the mountain!

Much swearing later, I was up & over the correct side of the hill and set up on my trainer in all my layers watching my breath steam in front of me as the "big kids" set up their team vans, warm-up tents etc.  One guy near me was actually REMOVING his water bottle cages!

I have to say the warmup prescription had me more than a little worried, but I persevered and approached the start line with "sweat dripping off my chin".  Right before I headed to the starting line I stripped EVERYTHING I could - hat, vest, arm & leg warmers... gloves.  I was about to start and as instructed, my body was HOT - not warm.

I was number 23 and my takeoff was not exactly smooth... the race went something like this:

Takeoff: 200% of threshold power "C'mon Jules, steady!  Get in a rythm"
First minute 125% of threshold power "Easy, easy, you're just starting.  You're gaining on the guy ahead - you're not *supposed* to catch him in the first minute"
Second minute: "Steady now, it gets steeper soon and you can drop it into your small chain ring and spin a little more.... oh, I *am* in my small chain ring... get your head in the game kid!"
First mile marker: Caught my 30 second man!  "Looking strong dude, keep it up" I said.  "Strong?!  You just put 30 seconds into me!" he replied.  He couldn't see my face by then so I just grinned and pedaled harder.
About halfway up the hill the fog had gotten severe; I couldn't see more than a dozen yards ahead but I was steadily catching people.
From the halfway point on things are pretty blurry; I remember almost slipping my chain, the incessant panting noises I was making were so loud I was actually embarrassed as I rode up on people wheezing like a steam engine... I remember some severe little steep inclines and how even out of the saddle my wheels seemed frozen to the ground - I started worrying that I had a brake pad rubbing... close to the finish (about 5 minutes out I think) the course wound its way into the park and there were some downhills and flats; I punished myself on those in my big chain ring, down in the drops and it felt like I was FLYING... the fog was so bad I could barely see - I remember thinking, "ok, its a paved road; if there is a sharp bend they'll have a marshal.  Marshals are soft.  Aim for the marshal.  And it's wet...  you'll slide... now DIG"

And so I dug.

The finish was about as un-dramatic as one could imagine - a small very foggy parking area, two or three riders and an ambient temperature of nothing more than 40 degrees.  A friend congratulated me and all I could mutter was, "Dishes are done man..." while trying not to faint or vomit or both... the dreaded "fomit."

The ride down the hill was one of the most miserable of my life.  Cold, shaking, numb fingers... I actually had to get off my bike twice because I was shaking so hard I was afraid I'd wreck.  After an interminable descent - and just as I was despairing I'd gone down the wrong side of the mountain *again* I found the parking lot and crawled into my car and cranked the heat.

All said and done a great ride, a horrible ride BACK.  For those interested in the numbers, I rode 24:46 for a second place finish in my category "Citizen/5" and set new Personal Bests in 5, 10, 30 and 60 minute power.  Average heart rate 178 - not bad for an "almost 40" year old.

I'm sure I've left some details out - like the victory basket was fruit, and on the drive out there I saw a wild turkey.... but I think you get the idea.
