I've done it the past two years.  I wouldn't see any issue with you taking over your friend's spot. The easiest would be if he/she picked up the gear and gave it to you, as one has to pick up with their ID.  Other than that,  I don't know how to transfer a registration.

A tip if you do end up doing it, it's fun.  I would recommend getting to the bridge early to get ahead of the crowd.  It get's quite busy on River Road and I witnessed a lot of poor handling skills.  Also, bypass the first rest stop and continue to the 2nd, or just wait until you get to Bear Mountain.  You should be able to find some fast riders and finish it sub six hours if you do so.

In Germany there are forums for such offers for events like this. Does anyone know about something like this?

It seems that GFNY has cut down their century to 84 miles. 

They're cutting out everything north of Tompkins Cove.

The promoter, Ulrich Fluhme, claims it's because he's making the event a UCI road race in 2024.

Considering he made the announced change this week and the race is a month away, May 21st, I'm having a bit of trouble believing him.  In other spaces, not in the press release, Uli has claimed that the UCI doesn't want courses doubling back on itself.  I believe the UCI doesn't want that, but Bear Mountain was a huge selling point for the race, and taking it out last minute seems like a pretty shitty thing to do when 5,000 or so people have shelled out $400+ apiece on the understanding that the event included Bear Mountain.

Your right it’s very expensive , but it’s always been at around that cost, hasnt stopped thousands showing up🤷🏻‍♂️
