Charlie usually runs an October race called the Kissena Fall Classic. Perhaps it becomes something like "The Phil Ginsburg Memorial Fall Classic presented by Kissena"

The other series are titled based on primary sponsor.

And absolutely a memorial ride and chip in for expenses.

I love the idea of a named race presented by Kissena.

Perhaps we can contact his family before we start passing the hat - it's impossible to guess what kind of insurance hey/they might have had through work or otherwise.

I think naming a race after Phil is great because it will both keep his memory alive for the long term and allow us to share his story with the larger cycling community. 

Phil only raced a bit of cyclocross in New York that I know of. Naming a New York road race after him seems a bit strange to me. I would encourage the club to memorialize Phil in a way that focuses on preserving his memory in Kissena or helping a cause he or his loved ones champion. In due time it should be possible to find that out from his family.

If I were still there (and I'm gutted that I'm not -- tbh I could really use some KCC team time about now), I would want to get together with the club to remember Phil. To ride and have fun and talk about how great a guy and teammate he was and to be able to talk about what happened and how we're feeling. And perhaps pause for a moment of silence on the Manhattan Bridge. I would have a hard time riding there without some kind of positive thing to weigh against the site of the tragedy.

I also feel something like a black armband to wear to races or perhaps something similar on the next order of jerseys would be an appropriate gesture and symbol of our grief.

My original thoughts were simple, a memorial ride, agree in prospect park, sooner rather than later, and black arm bands for our next race. 

I thought we could ask Charlie for a minute of silence before the next park race.

I love what has been suggested here, perhaps naming a park race, I understand that Phil raced cyclocross rather than road, but it would still be a sweet worthy gesture. But I get it that there might be something more specific to Phil we might want to do instead. Of course, if appropriate, and after discussing with the family, some gofund could also be good.

To stay focused, start with simple things: a memorial group ride in Prospect Park. And a few black arm bands for the next race.

I have no idea on the family’s plans , but flying a body home is expensive , we could offer to help with that,

collect all the photos we have of him in Kissena and print a sort of little book to give to the family/fiancè...?

Agree. I feel it'd be super helpful for his family to be able to dimensionalize his life here in NY by hearing people's stories and seeing pictures of him doing what he loved, that was one of the reasons for starting this thread.

Mark do you disagree, or is that in error?

A timeline is beginning to take shape:

This weekend: a memorial club ride
In the meantime: submitting photos to create a gift book 
With the family's permission: collecting money to help with expenses, or whatever they need
Next Kissena-sponsored race (7/8 L&C?): black armbands and a moment of silence
In the more distant future: naming a race after Phil

Thanks all, I think we have somewhat of a consensus. There's lots to do, could I ask for some volunteers to spearhead these efforts?

- the chip-in. It's a great idea, but need to understand Phil's families needs first. In interim it'd be helpful if someone could advise best service to use.

Phil's brother Tom and his parents arrive from the UK Thursday and leave Monday. Anyone who was close to Phil and wishes to meet with them this weekend, please contact me directly.

I’d love to join in for the ride on Sunday, let me know the details once they are sorted as I’ll need to find a bike. 

We should check if there are any events (Biathlon, or runs, or skates) else, suggest, as mentioned, Prospect Park as the location for the ride. The park also allows for people to easily join/drop out/etc.

A quick look at the Prospect Park alliance site, does not have any special events then.

Arm bands arrive Friday

In for the sunday ride, riding, coordinating et cc... let me know also if help is needed for the book. I don't mind at all putting it together... 

There was some discussion tonight about channeling our feelings of wanting to help into something constructive. An idea to help prevent this sort of thing from happening again was suggested.

I am proposing that the club as a whole, or in part facilitate for the purchase and/or installation of an automatic external debribilator (AED) at accessible point(s) along the Manhattan Bridge bike/pedestrian paths.

As some of you might already be aware or will soon come to know the details of this past Sunday, you may feel more strongly of this idea.

That is such a great idea.  There should be AEDs along the Manhattan Bridge.  Early defibrillation is key in these sorts of cardiac events and with the isolation of the bike path on the bridge that is not currently possible. I think this is a good avenue to pursue.

Obviously, this will have to be worked out with the city.  Maybe transportation alternatives would be able to help facilitate this.

I am in for the ride on Sunday. If I can help in any other way please let me know.

All weather AED's are a nice idea -  I had AED's installed at work and they were cheaper than a bike.

That said, shockable rhythms are a small percentage of overall cardiac events. I don't say this to discourage AED's (they should be all over the place imho) but to take some of the pressure off people who may have been wondering "what if."

If I remember right - even if you do get a someone shocked, their survivability drops linearly something like 10% per minute between time of the event and time of first shock.
