Slack

As you have already heard, we are setting up a Slack workspace for Kissena as an added benefit to team members.

What are the benefits of Slack?

  • Improved communications for group rides, races and events. You will be able to message or call someone in your Slack workplace without having their phone number in your phone's address book.
  • Improved communications during emergency situations. You will be able to retrieve any team member's emergency contact information if you can't find it in their wallet or don't have access to their phone.
  • Easier to use out on the road. The Slack app is optimized for mobile messaging making it ideally suited for communication when you're away from a computer.

How will we use it?

We will continue to use the Vanilla forum for most communications and long form discussions. Slack will be primarily used for coordination of rides, races, and events.

If you're posting a video or photo, please do so on Vanilla. Because we're using a free Slack workspace, messages are not permanently stored. Over time, old messages are deleted from the workspace.

"Lucarelli and Castaldi Race Report"
If you're posting a race report, bicycle tech discussion, your latest analysis of the best color for bar tape, or other long-form content, please do so on Vanilla. As mentioned above, the free version of Slack does not have a long message history.

"Anyone up for a few laps of Prospect Park tomorrow?"
If you're sending a quick message to organize a group ride, find or coordinate rides to an event, or communicate during a ride or event, please do so on Slack. Team members can receive notifications from direct messages and user name mentions in channels.

What's next?

Hang tight as we finish getting the workspace ready. In the next week or so, you'll receive an email invitation that will ask you to choose a password to create your Slack account.

What if I'm unfamiliar with Slack?

If you have not used Slack before or are unfamiliar with how to use it, reach out to me  (powell.johnr@gmail.com) and I'll help get you up to speed.
If you have not used Slack before, they have a few articles that do a good job of explaining what it is and how to get started once you're invited to a Slack workspace.

There are a number of other good tutorials on their site, but the above are intended to get people new to the application up and running.

We're still working on preparing the workspace for you. The holidays and preparing for the baby has me a little behind schedule. I'm hoping to start sending out Slack invites soon.
Slack invitations have gone out. Let me know if you have any issues getting set up.
Got it!
Got the email, looking forward to using slack out on the road (while stopped of course)
The reasoning behind using Slack is to help members coordinate group rides. Sign up for the channels that apply to you (e.g. #brooklyn) and post meaaages when you’re riding north or in the park.

The bonus is that unlike Vanilla you can have notifications pop up on your phone so you can see whose running late or who is looking for someone to ride with right now.

Jump on and try it out!
Thanks Pat, answered my own question...didn't see the top of thread post at first. Thank you though, very helpful
When you sign up, you’ll be automatically added to all of the public channels currently available.

@JohnPowell

Is there a way to have a Slack button on the Kissena VF and a Kissena button on the Slack?  I'd love it if it would open the other page in a new window.

Also looking at the channels, could we have things like "Saturday Ride," "Sunday Ride," "Friday, Prospect Park," etc?

My concern is both about being too general and too specific.  For example, while I live in upper Manhattan, perhaps people elsewhere would have an interest in my weekly long rides?  Or that we'll subdivide weekend rides into too-small channels, like "saturday spin in Central Park" so that others won't be able to find them.

It's a running chatroom so convos about specific rides on specific days can become their own threads.
Users can create their own channels so we’ll see what works best for everyone organically. The general channels (like #road or #manhattan) can be used to put out a ride inquiry and then people can split off into a private group chat to communicate and organize.

On the other hand, if people want more specific channels, they can make them. The thing to keep in mind is that not everyone can see new channels unless you invite them all. Slack also doesn’t provide a comprehensive channel directory for a workspace.

This shouldn’t stop anyone from creating other channels if they want. It’s your workspace! 😀
You can’t mess it up. If you create a channel and then it becomes unnecessary later, it can be archived.
I've set up our Slack Bot to provide emergency contact information for all members.

- You use it by typing the member's first name or initial, then their last name, and then "ICE", all on one line.
- For example, "John Powell ICE" or "J Powell ICE"
- You can use this in any channel on Slack to get ICE information.
- This is most useful on the mobile app so you can quickly get a member's ICE information while out on a ride.

In order to test it out, I've created a channel called #ice-info-test. You can find it on Slack in the sidebar on the left or search for it. Go to that channel and try out the ICE system. This will avoid clogging up other channels with a bunch of test messages.

If your ICE information in incorrect, send me a direct message on Slack.

I don't have ICE information in there for the most recent new members. I'll get that added soon.
I'm not sure I have everyone's emergency contact information set up on Slack. If you haven't tested yours out already, please do so as soon as possible.

On Slack, go to the #ice-info-test channel. You can find it in the left hand side bar or by searching for it. Once there, type your first name, last name, "ICE" and then hit return. Do it again with your first initial, last name, and "ICE".

Like this:
  • John Powell ICE
  • J Powell ICE
If it doesn't work and/or the information is incorrect, please let me know as soon as possible.

NOTE: this works on any channel in Slack, but we're using #ice-info-test channel to keep the tests from clogging up others.
