Thanks @RobertMullen. I could use some ideas for a very precocious 9 year old who is ready for calculus. jules dot roazen at gmail
stay safe, eh?
It turns out that working from home means horribly easy access to the kitchen.  But also trainer rides during lunchtime.
So Mike O, my bosses bosses boss, who is an asshole and bully, sent out the letter:

This letter serves to confirm that because of your position and the functions you perform, you are considered to be an essential employee to maintain standard services to the University. You may not be required at your campus workstation at all times.

However I don't meet their requirements to work from home...

Sorry, Andrew, that sucks.  But. . .

Even after today’s announcements
my office has still failed to give any guidance from working from
Headsinsand
My boss has been absolutely silent while other groups in my building (small building) are being given the okay, although...
sounds really rough, please take good care.

Quick Dept of Ed update for you NYC parents:
Word is we won't see kids until after the April 20th scheduled return date. It seems like Middle School state tests are on hold. Regents Exams are unclear. AP Exams may move to at home computer assessments. For now, things will be run through Google Classroom.

We just learned about a self-reported case at the school in my building's second floor. We're still here, but we have no kids for now.

I feel like I have a decent grip on this online education stuff, so if you know a student or a parent that needs some help working out some HS math (or if you're bored in self-quarantine and are interested in right triangles) shoot me an email!

I've got a 9th grader in Geometry - may take you up on that!

Never the sharpest knife in the drawer, is he?
This is a relevant one to read. It's a summary but the original is linked.

TLDR; barring a treatment (not a vaccine) we could be facing 18 months of shelter in place cycles

Just got an email from USA Cycling.  I assume all other license-holders did as well.

Racing suspended now until May 3.
Got an email they closed one of our corporate office buildings, on 5th Ave at 18th St.  Not the office, the entire building.  They said don't go there, no one is around.
My building is also closed. Someone in my firm tested positive though no one I came in contact with recently. Working from home sucks BTW. I don't know how people do it regularly.

Oh hell yeah.
In theory, your teachers should be up and running by Monday! But if anything funky goes on feel free to shoot me an email:

On the "good" side of things...

Can't bring myself to pay Carmichael for anything, but it's a nice gesture.

We've Made Our Entire Indoor Workout Video Collection Available For Free

The current public health crisis is understandably on everyone’s mind and it is disrupting many aspects of our daily lives and plans. With events and group rides canceled, and many of us turning to indoor training during this challenging time, we thought we could help keep you motivated to train.

As of today, we’ve decided to stop charging for our training videos and make our entire indoor cycling workout video collection available for free as a resource for athletes during this challenging time as the world navigates the coronavirus outbreak. Click the link below and you’ll get access to 20+ different indoor workout videos. While the video and music might be a little outdated :) the workouts are effective and have withstood the test of time.

During tough times, exercise and athletic training can provide important benefits that have very little to do with fitness and sport-specific performance. We encourage you to continue training and hope these videos will help keep you motivated.

Thanks Rob.

I got the same email, but it was super cryptic so I assumed something was up. I learned later that somebody on my floor has a confirmed case and was in the office as recently as this week, she lives in New Rochelle and had gone into work sick (FACEPALM). Of course this is all too little too late.
We now have a drive through testing center in our huge parking lot at the edge of campus. Of course you need to call first and talk to someone to give you the okay to show up to be tested. You just can't show up and get tested.
I've got this little spreadsheet I'm using to keep an eye on how the "curve flattening" is going in the United States, because doing exponential growth in one's head is always hard.

The two scenarios are 2.4 and 6 day doubling times, which are the ranges I've read about the most.

^I would expect since testing is super insufficient we'd see a huge spike somewhere in there where the testing capacity has caught up, and I'll just edit the spreadsheet.
Not enough coffee this am; obviously if that starting number is higher than 10k, these numbers look pretty horrific

Though those numbers are quite horrific in terms of what growth looks like, I do have to ask, why is this set 18 years ago?
Hilarious. Because I'm a dyslexic typist!
Hey @Jules I can toss you my work from home work if you want to get your mind off of the covid. I'll even let you do it for free, you don't need to pay for this distraction
@cpulvidente I’ll do your work if you take care of my boys - 7 and 3. This is a fair trade.

@Jules I have to ask.

Is this sport or coping?
Well without doubt it isn't sport - although fwiw I think the Olympics and fall events are toast - but it doesn't make me feel any better so let's agree to call it "failed coping."

I'm lining up several hours of socially distant fat biking tomorrow - hopefully that helps.
I built on Jules' model by including various mortality rates, and had everything ready to post it here, but I decided that we didn't need to go down that path, and deleted before posting.

I agree that trying to wrap your head around this is a coping mechanism, especially for those of us who spend our time trying to quantify phenomenon as a vocation, there is some comfort in the numbers and trying to really comprehend the scale of what we are dealing with.

My bro...

This goes without saying, but I am going to say it so you've heard it from me directly.  We're a Team, and a great one, we support each other in riding, in training, and in this wide world of ours.
I want us to be healthy and safe all the time, and especially now during this crisis.
We're a small, tightly-knit subculture of people in this city, which means to me that we generally need to stick together, and now, I think, more than at any other time.  Ironically, that also means riding solo, and if possible, riding at non-peak times to help limit your exposure, or better yet, sticking to the trainer and Zwifting, like many of you are already doing.  And it's also a great time to take a break, especially if you've been training hard, to give your body a rest.  These are stressful times - workouts help alleviate stress, as does resting and getting enough sleep.
When riding in Team kit, remember that you represent your sponsors (all are now either closed or have limited hours), you represent the Team, you represent me as I represent you.  For me, that means behaving on the bike as though I owned the companies that sponsor us.
The Team and the kit also mean that we support and rely on each other.  If any of you have any kind of hardship, reach out to us, on this site, or DM us individually, email, through Slack.  If you need anything, let us know.  Frankly, I have one new roll of TP I just put on, and one extra.  If you're out, if you need that roll, let me know and I'll ride it over to you, and when mine runs out, I'll figure something out.  It's hard not to see that as a joke, but my supermarket is completely out of paper products and I made the mistake of believing the news that there was plenty.  There's not, and they're out.
If you're out, let me know.  If anyone needs anything today, or this week, let us know.
This is what we do, and this is what the Team means to me, that we help each other and stick together in the worst of times.
We wear the same colors, we bleed the same color when other people crash us out, we share in each other's wins, and share in experiences, exhaustion, and our sacrifices.
Stay safe, train hard, rest hard, support each other, and represent me the best you can, and I'll do the same for you.
