What goes in your race bag?

34 comments · 351 views
So as the first race of the year approaches. I am putting together my park race bag for the season. This of course changes throughout the season. I want to know what other people have in their race bags, and why. All this is in addition to what I wear to race.

Here is what I plan to have in it:
* Jacket
* Leg Warmers
* Arm Warmers
* Jersey
* Base Layer
* Full Fingered Gloves
* 2 bars
* 2 gels
* Spare printed authorization to ride (just in case I forget my license). available at usacycling.org
* Printed rider release form, pre filled out with everything but event name and date. This can save a ton of time early in the morning when you're trying to remember your wife/girlfriend/SO emergency contact info. http://www.usacycling.org/forms/rider_release.pdf
* Hand sanitizer
* Baby wipes
* Plastic bags (for wet clothes)
* Cell Phone
* Cash (in case you didn't win and you still want an after race coffee)

I didn't mention shoes and helmet because I am riding to the race and I'll already be wearing those things, but if you're driving don't forget those.

What do other people put in their race bags?
travel fondue set
crystal radio set
sweating to the oldies, volumes 1, 2 and 4

sorry - i actually do have something constructive to say: race with your wallet and cellphone in your back pocket. NEVER leave them in your bag.

a) these get stolen all the time

b) god forbid you end up in the hospital, you'll be a LOT happier to have that stuff on you
also: extra socks
Cellphone I leave in the bag, because it isn't worth crap. Last year I bought a pre-paid cellphone plan. I loaded my girlfriend's number and my emergency contacts info into it. I pay $15 every 3 months for 60 minutes of airtime. I never use more than about 15 minutes. I get a cellphone I don't case about losing, crushing, breaking, whatever.

Another option is if you're already on a family plan, make a fictitious family member and add another line and the cheapest phone you can get.

This way you don't get your undies in a bunch about losing a iPhone 4G/Nexus S/Blackberry Awesome or whatever smart phone you use to impress the ladies and play Angry Birds.
william's wallet.
I keep a cycling specific wallet for races and road rides that holds my racing license, old drivers license, cash, a credit card and medical insurance card. The wallet is a tough nylon fabric so it doesn't matter if it gets wet.

If you need a bag to keep all your stuff together check out the review of the Lake team cycling bag I posted on the forum.

Bumping this up in case folks need a reminder of race bags.

I am totally down with putting William's wallet in my bag, but last time I checked he only had $3, two Hello Kitty stickers and a Piggly Wiggly store loyalty card.
Dan,
That's a big bag.  Bigger than I'd take to a race I ride to. I also am no fan of hand sanitizer, unless it's to take embrocation off hands.

In my "ride to races" bag on cold mornings, I have William's wallet, first and foremost.  I usually have my race jersey in the bag so I can pin on the number without getting too cold.  If I'm riding far afterwards, I also have a second pair of gloves, a second baselayer, a warm hat, a post-ride drink, a bar or two.  I also have a blinky light on the bag and a front blinky on the handlebars

Once we get to the warm months of the year, I usually skip the bigger bag for one of those minimal string backpacks.  It stays in the pocket for the ride to the race, and then at the race, I put my pump, repair kit, warmers, jersey in it (I'm often racing this time of year in a skinsuit).
My race bag: a box of matches, USB drive of porn, and some tapioca pudding.
@Jeff thank you for taming that post down.
Owens has been planning that post for like three weeks.

^ that is true - he texted a few drafts to me last night
TMZ had a story lined up about it, but then Kim Kardashian's hairdresser's dog walker's stylist's intern was almost seen getting into a car and that bumped the story.
What are the matches for?
for destroying the thumb drive before it falls into the hands of the enemy.
The matches are for fire
Note to self: Add tires to the race bag.
and never forget "cocaine for our eyes and chloroform for our gums.."
@daveyang - tires? Or tubes? But definitely baby wipes too...
Baby wipes are for non eco-friendly family men.
Put a moist wash cloth in a zip lock bag. Leave it on the dash board if you want it warm. This is great for'cross races.
phillip: a tire.  my sidewall ruptured last night en route to the race and it nearly cost me the evening.  certainly made getting there more interesting.
phillip was a hero last night -- a HERO! -- for having baby wipes.  i seriously doubt that a "warm cloth" would be any match for what floyd presents.  i am almost certain that shit was penetrating my bones.
I've never thought about bringing a spare tire.  But I'm sure it can't hurt to have an extra one.

Straight up tires.  Like Rigby said he blew out the sidewall on his rear (and blew out chili dog flatulence out of his rear-rear, whew, go easy, Brendan) and scrambled for an extra tire/wheel to race.

Tires fold up pretty small so I can toss a used but usable set in my race bag.
Sunday at Floyd, the guy on the megaphone was soliciting a pedal. So, I guess spare pedals wouldn't hurt if your race bag is big. Especially if you ride Speedplays (zing).
Speedplays in your bag will infect everything in it.  Your pump will fall apart, tubes will be eaten by a new strain of bacteria that feasts on butyl and latex, spare bottles will develop holes and and leak Brawndo (the thirst mutilator!) all over your spare kit.

So no.  No to Speedplays.  Only Look style spare pedals.

Problem solved (although I don't see tires on the list).
Nice find!

Equipment Check!

Racing season is upon us.  (Ok, it's upon you. . .)  And the last thing you want at 5am in the pitch black is to find you forgot to put your pedal back on after cleaning it the night before.

This is what I do the night before a race:

Clean my bike, oil my chain, clean my wheels.
Not only does that make it look great, but makes me put my hands and fingers over the components so I can find any new scratches, dings, loose spokes, or anything else that may be a problem in the race.

Lay out my clothes, helmet, glasses, gloves, shoes, anything going in my jersey pockets, including food, house keys, baggy with credit card, health card, phone, $20, water bottles.  Don't forget anything, so you don't have to think about it in the morning.  Grab and go.

Race bag.  There's a great discussion about what to put in it above.  Put all that stuff in it.  I like to include validating post-it notes, because I really am a 'champ', and I'm going to 'go get 'em!'  No, I don't, but that's freakin hilarious.

Tag everything!  I sharpie my name in all my clothes.  Who's jacket is this?  Mine, those are my initials.  Done.  Tag your helmet.

Tag your bike computer!  I sharpied my Garmin 500 with my name and Team Name on the bottom.  I also created a text file and dropped it into the Garmin Folder just in case some other computer racer picks it up and takes a look inside.  Phone number, email.  Yes, mine has popped off and skidded across the road.

Early mornings are a time to focus on the race.  Get everything ready so you can do just that.  Then go and have a great race, champ, and go get 'em!
