Tour de Romandie

I thought it about time I created a new discussion for this race, seeing that once a year I find myself sending stuff about it.
So the final stage in Fribourg finishes a 5 minute walk from my doorstep. And the start is just a little bit further, a place I pass almost every day when I take my youngest to day care. My wife passes there on her way to work every day. It's a nice small city here, with a medieval old town that hasn't been destroyed by commercialism. On Tuesday I rode the TT course, and it's a lovely ride. The toughest part is at the start, which means that pacing oneself and not blowing up will be very important. Right after the start is a steep winding descent down to the old town, through it, across the river separating French and German Switzerland, and then up a long steep cobbled climb. In my current lack of fitness state, I found it very hard. Especially since I was also protecting my knee a little bit. After the lovely steep cobbled climb there is a turn and then onto a one lane road through a forest, with some recently filled potholes. Then it winds its way out into the lovely countryside, with the Bernaise Alps in the distance and cows closer. Then it returns to the city, back through the old town, past the cathedral and my physical therapy, then up a short not-too-steep climb to the finish. It will be cold and wet, so the cobbles and the twisty descents will be tricky. Tire pressure and choice will be very important, along with a good warmup. Here are a few shots:

This is right after the start, a quick right turn to begin a steep twisty descent into the old town.

The start of the final climb, a quick effort.

And here's the finish

What a finish today! We are living in a golden era of cycling right now.

Caveats for doping.  Obvs.

You were wondering how Mike Woods could win in such fields.  Today we got the answer.  Uphill finish. Cold rain. Underdressed competitor.

@Nathaniel Miller Thanks for the pictures. Enjoy it live

This is right now!

Megahot photos @Na@"Nathaniel Miller"

I think it was in conversation the other day that I said the only way Woods was going to win was if the guys in front of him fell down. Not exactly how it played out but...

My Croatian wife spotted the Zagreb plates on the Bahrain cars.  There’s a chance that in 3 years we’ll be living there. Ah, academia...
My youngest slept through the whole event.

What is that blue tape on Woods’ balls?

Spot the Kissena! Old school hat. Eloy, didn’t you design the older kit?

hahaha, I guess I did. #firah
Fiah photos @Nathaniel Miller
The tap is to keep him from slipping back. Usually it's sandpaper on the saddle...
Seriously the most ghetto thing I've seen since Roglic's #helmetgate at last year's TdF

the French are French.
The photos are great. I think I recognized the square where we met for lunch a few years back.

Jules - Leave it to a Canadian to get it backwards… or maybe it’s because skinsuits leave inadequate room for Canadian… bacon
Did someone say.... Canadian?

I live IN Fribourg!! That's my pretty how town. Come and visit, but make it soon. We won't be here more than 3 years, assuming my wife gets the extra funding (she should, but nothing is guaranteed). it's crazy that after a lifetime in NYC, I'm living here. I'm so looking forward to getting my knee sorted out so I can get back on the lovely local roads. It's just freakin' beautiful here. That said, what NYC has in spades is community and culture. Don't be too jealous. Just try and experience the best of both.

If you look at the video you posted, you'll see me, along with my family and some friends when were at the finish (look for that orange and white cycling hat - I'm also wearing a partially hidden long sleeve jersey):

... and then Monday morning, they didn't waste any time covering up the TDR posters. Until next year...

If you want to see more of my hometown area, Cyclingtips did this nice sponsored video:
