We've made the decision to switch the training camp location from LA to Tucson, AZ.  The current wildfires are right around where we would have been staying/riding and we felt that this would make getting quality rides in much harder.  Tucson is a cycling destination for many pros in during the winter, so it's a great alternative!

I’ve now ridden with Kissena and not in LA (multiple times), Tucson and Miami. LA was the best riding. Happy Kissena is going back.

FYI hat JetBlue charges more than most airlines for bikes. Last o checked it was an extra $150 each way. That is unless they have a special deal for Dutch Mt Baldy champions or have discovered a new love for cyclists 

It looks like they treat bikes like all other bags.

They didn’t charge me more last time I used them, but admittedly that was after riding Baldy

Good to see they’ve changed their policies

Hello my fellow Kissenistas, I unfortunately can't join the training camp this year, but I am in LA this week for the start of my new job with bike in tow.. Luckily the new job is a company based in Santa Monica, which means I got to pick essentially the closest hotel to the Santa Monica mountains. 

This morning I rode into Topanga Canyon. For those traveling here, word to the wise that you'll encounter traffic on the ascent/descent from the Canyon to the PCH if you head through that way. There's about a 1/4 mile stretch that's down to one lane and opens on a relay for traffic. I got stopped on the way up (in a section at like 8% gradient) and had to wait like 10 mins for the cars to pass. The descent back down required some weaving around a long long line of cars (over a half mile easily), including some riding on/just over the double yellow line (to avoid the steep and tight pitch on the shoulder). It wasn't as treacherous as it sounds as for a good chunk there were 0 cars coming up, but was slow going and I would dip back into the right side of the shoulder when the oncoming cars were coming through. It would definitely interrupt intervals and require some finesse for a group to navigate. BikeLA subreddit encouraged the ride and it seems groups are doing it, but fair warning. 

I was climbing up around 6:45am and there was a long line of cars heading down, and when I descended around 7:45am it was much busier (prime rush hour). The PCH route back (which I suspect you guys will be able to avoid most of) was super busy as expected, but not much worse than riding on 6th ave between Herald Square and Central Park. The traffic up and down slowed me down and I had to turn back without finishing the route I had planned so I could make it to work on time. 

You guys will have great fun. The area impacted by the Palisades fire is back with some small shrubs and green vegetation, but they are still repairing infrastructure. There is scaring on the trees, but at least in that area it isn't as bad as I think it is further east (near my hotel).  

Tomorrow I'll be riding up Mandeville Canyon, and Thurs I may try Flores Canyon, but apparently it's very hard (13-14% in some areas?) and I would rather get some miles in than be grinding away hating life...
