Starting a new thread for any/all future Central Park open races that occur.
Looks like @KevinWomackand I in Cat 5 clinic race for Saturday

@David Yang in 3/4

@mugwumpare you racing?

Reg closes in <90m and it says there's no day-of.

Awesome, will meet you guys at the park before/after the race and then we can ride up to GWB if you're doing new member ride.

Smaller fields in pre-reg than I expected for an open Central Park race.

Loool, the algorithm has spoken! BikeReg clearly hasn't been updated to include my PP Crash n Burn DNF clinic last week with @Maxbucksbaum and my current Friday “Active Recovery” ciders.

We raced, we learned lessons and all came out the other end better competitors.

I woke up at 3:45a, parked in LIC by 4:45a and was pinned up and doing a warm up lap with Kevin by 5:30a.

My 3/4 field went out hot with attacks almost from the get go. I stayed mid pack, not confident of my fitness and unknowing the rhythms of a Central Park race. The first split of 6 happened somewhere in horseshit alley, tantalizingly dangling off the front by a few seconds. I was banking on unrepresented teams to chase but didn't think of them sending guys up there individually to bridge. A few stronger riders seemed to gel together and I watched another set of 6-8 riders sail off into the sunset by cats paw. I tried the old trick of sitting directly behind lone wolf riders pulling hard and encouraging them to keep pulling, while obviously never pulling myself. It was worth a shot but ultimately not enough riders pulled through as all the big teams were represented in the break. A CRCA development jr rider sitting on wheels all race also tried it occasionally much to my amusement. Their admonishments did not work either.

My lame duck group ended up doing some hot laps, occasionally punctuated by a few riders trying to have some fun and attempting a half hearted little break. They never stuck but kept things interesting. There were a few truly atrocious bike handlers in the field and it kept my mind busy devising plans and finding lines to move up to avoid their wheels.

Bell lap, somewhere around the 70s on the west side I heard some jostling and a crunch of carbon. I shook my head - we were racing for 15th at best and for whatever reason people were so possessive of their positions. When we all collectively realized we're out of the money I was gladly letting people out in the wind onto the wheel in front of me. Am I too laissez fair? Maybe, but only when I know none of us have a shot at local amateur bike racing glory.

Group sprint wound up (we all still had some self respect) and I gave it an honest effort but halfway up cats paw I just didn't have the firepower to sustain it and sat up finishing DFL, which hey, 50th or 15th, it's all the same to me.

I regrouped with Kevin and Blake (who went off for some endurance training) and accosted people I knew who made the break. Turns out Isaac Rosenthal, JPs pal and collegiate rider won! I was very stoked for them.

Kev had to feed his pups so after a quick stop and snack break we headed up to the bridge for the new member ride, still pinned up and with new race experience in our legs.

So happy we got to race, had a great time and hope to see you at the next one.
Sorry folks for not showing.  My last two CP races ended in the hospital, and I'm still a bit sensitive about the Harlem Meer descent.  Seems like that wasn't the issue today.  (Ironically, my memory of that second race ended just after that descent)

I'm getting Isaac's take as we write.  He felt the gap was pretty big, he was told 4 minutes, yet it seems they were still going kind of hard because the best sprinter in the group seemed to be cramping up.

Any race you can learn from and finish upright is a good one. Fucking hell though 3:45am?
Next Saturday is the CRCA Open in Central Park: https://www.bikereg.com/70878

Special shouts out to @RJ Simoni and @GuyJoseph - They have a Men's Beginner Race Clinic (Cat 5/Novice @ $32.20 BARGAIN) which i highly recommend, 3 laps so completely doable and a good measure of where you are fitness wise.

To add to that the construction at the top of the park is complete so you can burn round that downhill as fast as you like!

Anyone else down? The 3/4 is 7 laps.

@KevinWomack

I haven't been paying attention to the CP race schedule.  But this I like.  Seriously considering.  thanks for the heads up.
Signed up for the 3/4’s.

C’mon now you Brooklynites/Queensites. Who’s down for getting up a little bit earlier than normal to head over here and join @mugwump (potentially) & I?

5:30am start time 🥱
Man would love to race with you, but it's a rough weekend considering the ID4 festivities the day/night before and a beach outing on Saturday.

I"ll be there for the 1/2/3's.  We can meet up after

@David Yang

Beach outings are for sleeping.  Get the fam in place, open up the umbrella, lay out the towel, promise your wife she can nap if you can sleep on the second shift.
Race Report

Cat 3/4, around 35 riders. Stayed in the bunch drifting around the whole time, lots of surging, spent 18 mins at 340W+ which isn’t ideal.

Was in 3rd going down the hill at 110th on the last lap, 5th going into Harlem Hill with the plan to sag a bit and then work back up the field. Di2 battery died by the top of the hill and I got stuck in the small chainring, could not stay with the field.

Rolled round to the finish, with a slow flat that I’d also had for half the race.

On finishing I stopped, went into the joggers lane, rolled back to see JP who was by the side. Got screamed at by everybody for riding in the joggers lane (was just rolling slowly not even clipped in but I get it) apologized, walked the rest of the way with my tail between my legs.

All in all a great day, going to get some sleep now.

Average Power 227W, NP 272W.

Brutal Kevin but good showing and getting thru it!
