Randall’s Island Crit 9/29

Signed up for Randall’s Island Crit this weekend if anyone wants to join?

https://www.bikereg.com/randalls

Only two heats and doesn’t seem to be split into categories (eek). I’m thinking to go recon Friday or Saturday.

Any and all advice welcome!
Check out this thread for some race reports:

It's a technical course and the wind can play a big factor.

This format is a bit weird though...
Randall's Island Crit - Race Report

General
  • Did a couple of recon laps as had never rode round here before. The course seemed pretty smooth with only 2 sharp turns(>90 degree). One woman went down on a corner in their race as all the leaves had not been cleared properly
  • The course was completely soaked through, huge puddles hard to avoid
  • 1/2 the winners in each heat go through to the final, the other half go into a 2nd chance race, with half of those going to the final
Qualifying Heat 2
  • 11 of us in this race - 6 go through to the final
  • 5 laps
  • The group consisted of Cat 2 through the Cat 5
  • A front and a back group was quickly established, I tried to be in the front but nope
  • We all stuck together
  • Came in around 8th/9th in a strung out group
2nd Chance Group
  • 5 Laps
  • Stayed at the front in this one and did some turns with a ~15 year old from Star Track and a big guy
  • The big guy was big enough to get a good draft so just stayed behind him on the last lap and went round him on the last corner
  • Sprint to the line and I took it by a wheel
  • 1st place (aka fastest loser) - I'll take it :-)
Final (40 mins)
  • 15 qualified, only 13 raced
  • 2 groups quickly established - Front 7, back 6
  • We all took turns in the back group
  • Caught back up to the first group around lap 4, they spotted us and turned the afterburners back on
  • More turns and 5 laps to go sign.
  • I led 2 of the last 6 laps so with 2 to go slipped back to recover for the last lap
  • With 2 to go the race leader had lapped us and we pretty much just rode behind him on his last lap
  • He finished ahead of our group which also means that was our last lap - did not know this
  • I came in 12th out of 13 thinking we had a lap left - could have done better if I'd of know but oh well

3 races for the price of one. Great course, really enjoyable but completely soaked to the bone. Think that's the last race of the season for me.
Kevin that is epic, glad you stayed upright and sounds like you had a good time despite the rain. Awesome job, you're going to be a beast in the spring.
Signed up for this a couple of weeks ago and I'm not sure I'm gonna make it: https://www.bikereg.com/71083 - August 17th

It's ~$54 but I'll transfer over and give $20 discount to anyone who is interested.

It's tight, technical, and has some boulders to catch you incase you run off the road, in other words, a fun ride!

Bumping this back up to the top in case anyone is still thinking of going. It's a great crit course.
