5Boro Bike Tour By the Numbers

Yesterday I did the 5 boro bike tour with Priscilla. I decided to do it with my roadbike, with the powertap. So I figured I would share with you all the power data from the biggest cycling event in NYC.

Max Power: 296 - as I was crushing the competition up the Queensboro bridge
Avg Power: 46
Normalized Power: 81 - I guess I coasted a bit if my normalized power is almost twice my avg power
Avg Watts/Kg: 0.69
Avg Speed: 10.38

Read those power numbers and weep. I totally won that thing with that kind of watts and that kind of average speed. The 5 Boro bike tour demands the toughest training and strongest competitors.
you better make it a rest week. Seriously, we won't judge if you admit Priscilla dropped you on the first bridge.
TOTALLY
F'N
EPIC

Automatic cat1 upgrade if you ask me.

What's the leader jersey look like?

I would seriously like to do this sometime. It seems like it would be neat to ride on streets that are normally off limits. Especially on a nice day.
Nice. Those were actually my numbers from the Dragon TT! It's throw-down time Reiners.
oh man

lolling hard over here
Actually I had to do some data massaging. Apparently there was a short malfunction in the power meter pick-up, originally my max speed was 2,246 MPH. If that was really the case, I would have finished the tour in one minute 7.3 seconds. I was a little over that time, at 4:22, and almost 6 hours of total time (lots of standing around).

talk about an interval session
hey all - its 5 boro bike tour time again.

Dan and Priscilla are doing it again (Dan, this time she gets the powertap, move it over)

JP and his son Oscar are doing it (with radios?)

I am returning to the scene of the crime - prep for this ride in 2009 was what made me buy a new road bike and learn to ride more than 12 miles. I am excited for 40 miles of closed roads (and orange slices!)

Is anyone else going to be out that day (riding ? volunteering? skateboarding ?) . Are you wearing your club jersey ?

All Fred jokes aside, this is the biggest cycling event in NYC, I want to put something on the Kissena twitter that says something like "Kissena members will be out and about at 5BBT - if you see us say hi! We could love to talk about NYC bike racing with you".
We'll be there so long as it doesn't rain.
If your possy is impatient and want the training version, just pull in from a side street near 14th when they have road closure. Old school FDR Brooklyn Bridge exit style boyeee!
Josh,

It is done on the tweetle!

#Kissena riders will be representing at the @bikenewyork #5BBT this Sunday. Say hi to us on the road. Come talk to us about NYC bike racing.
I was going to do this with Sam and Phoebe, but the website says 1) riders under the age of 9 can't ride their own bike and 2) has to be one adult for each kid. My wife is off with a friend all day...but I'd be willing to try it if I could score a trailer. Anyone have a trailer they can lend me?
Oscar was also wearing his Kissena jersey, but it was too chilly to take off his jacket.
...dropped in to a bit of 5Boros as post race&Big breakfast recovery ride, from Vanderbilt AV along BQE over Verazzano to Staten Island Ferry, Ferry back to Manhattan, BK Bridge(most amaZing beautiful structure ever concieved or constructed), past Ft Greene Pk & home 2 stJames PL...f u n! free;>
@Harry - nice. Yeah, surprisingly the only vest check I remember was at the Queensboro bridge , none at the BQE or the Verazzano. Normally you take the Gowanus to the Belt and exit in Bay Ridge, rides the streets to a Verazzano on ramp, and then they do a vest check there. Due to construction they had us go via the BQE\Gowanus directly onto the bridge, I liked this option much better.

In 2009 I think I got to the start EARLY (like 5:45). I rode from the Battery up to Church Street and Thomas Street (for the "start" line, even though VIPs and Charity riders have separate corrals blocks ahead).
On 5 hours of sleep (went out with Alice for my bday Saturday night), I got in at 6:20am this year, and found only a few very porous lines of folks at the start, and was able to scoot up to the front. By 6:45 there was a huge mass of people – and it didn’t start till 7:45. My goal was 40 miles of traffic free riding, minus the crazies. I hear closed roads and I picture this Vanilla Sky esque nirvana. Kissena club ride, no red lights, no cars, just lots of awesome. I forgot how much insanity comes at events like this. We had to rank our selves based on fitness and training level so they could decide which start wave to put people in, and trust me, most of the folks at my start grid did not train .

At 7:30 or so they let you advance forward to join the charity groups, then they let them advance a few minutes later to join the VIPS. I didn’t like this format. They had 3 pockets of folks, with healthy space in the middle. Instead of letting them all start at the same time (and have some more open road to sort everything out on), it was just one giant blob of people.

We started at 7:45, rolled up 6th ave to Central Park, up to the park Drive and onto Adam Clayton Powell blvd. It was only at ACP blvd that there started to be enough space to be comfortable, but it was never total comfort. The 5BBT sadly is about being hyper aware of other riders in order to keep the rubber side down. Road the FDR and over the Queensboro bridge. Riding the wrong way on 21st street in Queens past my apt was awesome. The whole 6 lanes were open, but 99% of the riders stayed on the “right”
side of the road. I “wronged –wayed” it there just because, when else could I ?

I made it to the Astoria Park rest stop in 1:10 of riding, got some food and water, and queued up to leave for part 2. I got there at 8:55, they didn’t leave from Astoria till 9:15. For the second portion, they had a rolling escort of 3 cop cars, lights on the whole time. Everyone tried to stick to these cars. I hung back just a bit , it was “safer” but there were still plenty of folks who couldn’t hold a line. There was a big rider pileup right after we got onto the BQE, there was so much open space there, it was unfortunate (and un-necessary). Some kid in a jersey, minimalist running sneakers, feet on top of his cages, and a loose tie, and no helmet, just pissed me off. Riding the BQE as it climbed over the Gowanus canal (opposite the Smith/9th Street subway station) was awesome, as was riding the Verazzano.

I got into Staten Island at 10:15. So, an hour 10 to Astoria, and an hour to SI., AWESOME. No injuries DOUBLE AWESOME. The finish festival was EMPTY, barely anyone had finished yet. I got some samples, got my photo , and was ready to roll at 10:30. Except they didn’t let anyone leave (I don’t think they were ready at the ferry). Sadly I wasn’t taking the ferry home, so waiting really bugged me. When we left at 11:15 I was cold, and I cramped up. I got back to normal quickly, rode over to the ferry, and cut off to the left to keep riding.

I road over to the Bayonne Bridge, and over to NJ. I followed a bike route from Bayonne into Jersey City, and then Hoboken. I tooled around in Hoboken a bit (rode up a hill to Alice’s old apt), then kept going North. Beyond safety in the 5 boro portion, I had two goals for the day:
1) do the day under my own power (no ferry, no subway, etc)
2) learn the route between Hoboken and the GWB in case the GWB walkway is ever closed .

The roads in Bayonne were nice, but in most of Jersey City it was bone rattling riding. Hoboken to Port Imperial Blvd to River Road to the GWB was nice (well paved mostly, nice shoulder, easy riding).

Goals accomplished, 84 miles total ridden, nice day on the bike.
