Try Unibroue's "Don de Dieu" and you won't even know what Bikereg, PP or GAP are. Made in Hejesdal's country... (oh, my wife would kill me if she read that approximation!)
it was a light field, i think a lot of folks slept in. Dave and I were in the 4's. Dave did quite a lot of work up front. I softpedaled for him at the front when he went off on one attack just before the down hill, but it didnt really stick. any suggestions on blocking techniques when your guy is up the road? i also tried a downhill attack i think in the 3rd lap just cause going downhill seems easy, but that didnt get me too far. Dave also contested the prem's and i think he said he took 4th in the second one. I sat in for the last 3 laps or so, fretted a lot about positioning coming around on the last lap, broke out at 100 yards and took the sprint. there was a very nastylooking accident about 500 yards out i think out of the corner of my eye. i think everyone walked away, not sure.
Jorge 3rd and Jeff C 4th in the 5 race. McKay came through the 4 finish ablaze for the win. I flatted out of the masters race but Norm and Nathaniel rode strong while smartly avoiding the field sprint with a parks truck in the middle of it. I missed the 123 finish but JP and Rene both looked strong.
I don't think attacking on that downhill ever works - there's just no way to stay away. I remember trying that my first ever race, and it amounted to nada.
Years ago I worked with a guy who rode for Mengoni. He once won a race on the last lap by attacking on that little bump at the top of the downhill, and held off the entire field to the finish. All you need is a huge engine, a team behind you, and luck. Simple, right?
btw: Meanwhile, over in the Masters: I achieved half my goal by successfully bridging solo to a 7-man break, I made 8. It took about two minutes, I rolled right by one other bridger, the group was well-behind, so no followers. But as I arrived in the group and started working --I ended-up getting yelled at. This was not because I wasn't working, but because I wasn't working correctly. I don't know why Mr. Axis guy picked on me (well, I was just in front of him in the rotation, I guess that's why), as things were messy when I showed-up. Anyhow, first the group was taking 20-30 sec pulls, with several guys skipping their turn, politely waving riders through. Then it switched to a rotating paceline. Three dudes stayed at the back. About a lap and half from its initiation, we were caught. I was disappointed, mostly because I was trying to get into a flow with the workin' dudes and I wanted that practice.
Back in the big group, I stayed up front for a bit, saw Nathaniel charge away for a while, saw Jim puncture (maybe that was earlier though), then I slid to the back --moved up a couple times to see what was going on, hatched a plan to take a flyer to burn everything off (in my legs, that is), but backed-off as even the masters looked a bit squirrely in the last lap maneuvering... didn't care to jockey about in a big group especially as thoughts of summer hill races began to course though my mind... let's here it for Housatonic... next weekend!
Please pardon the intrusion into the Tour of New York cat4 race thread!
btw, was McGarrity on Siggi/Velocity? i noticed those guys had a terrifying habit of having somebody in front cut hard across the whole front of the field. saw it 2 or3 times. but i got the impression they were bumping around a lot. knuckleheads.
