Mangoseed Prospect Park Race - July 31st

Horace was plugging this race last night. A pretty sick cash purse in the Pro1/2 and a CAT 3 only race. Anyone interested?

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13755
ask him to equal the length of the 3 race to the 1-2 race so it counts for upgrade purposes. cat 3 only races are so rare around here, make it count.
I'll email him.

@ 35 miles it will count for Circuit Race Points

@52 miles it will count for road race points?

correct?
Horace said he'll make it longer. Sweet!
I just checked bikereg and the races are longer: cat 3 is 45miles, P12 is 58 and M40+ is 40 miles. These races also start later than usual at 6:50am.
I'm wondering if this isn't going to lead to the races finishing when the park is fairly busy (the P12 would be finishing after 9am) ?
Still not a road race for the cat 3 field :-(
I ran into Horace in the park yesterday and we chatted. He said he's flexible and can maybe add another lap and is hoping the upgrade people (Eric) will be flexible too :) He'd said he'll talk to you about what he can do.
This is coming up this Sunday. Not a lot of racing options otherwise, so come join the fun.
i'm in for the 4's....
Anyone want to joine me in the 1/2/3s?

I'll be on the smackdown ride or whatever we've got going on Saturday as well.
JP, it is actually a separate Pro12 field, so Kissena's options are limited for that one. Good luck! Although my bet is that they combine the fields based on pre-reg numbers.
Hey guyz, its been a bit, but I am back racing again.

I am registered for this, and the names on the pre reg list for the 4/5s make me feel like this is going to go to an early brake. I dont know how strong I am, (last week was my first race back, and I saw the front twice) but I am willing to help make something work if somebody is feeling strong.
I'm in as well in the 4/5 race.

This is only my second race of the season. Looks like a lot of new names/faces, so let's get to the park a bit earlier than usual for introductions and whatnots.
I was in cat4/5 field. It's so confusing race. On the registration page cat4/5 is 30 miles. So, not a few riders thought the race was 9 laps (3.4mile loop x 9 = 30 miles). Also, there's neither final-lap bell nor "X LAPS TO GO" sign on the start/finish line. But the race ended on 8th lap (27miles). mmm... I should have done the double-check...

Hard race in the 3s today. Lenny, Rene, Wojciech and I lined up. After the 1st prime a break rolled off and we missed it. Tried to follow a move across, but couldn't hold the wheel on the next lap. Tried to chase, to no avail. Lenny tried to set me to bridge across but I had nothing in the legs. I end up finishing somewhere around 5th or 6th in the field sprint for something like 14th or 15th. BH did a very nice job of shutting down bridge attempts and blocking in the field. Other solo riders didn't help chase, instead did the 400 meter hero thing. Bummer. That's bike racing for you.

I'm tired. I'm sick again. It has been a very long season for me.I think I've doubled or tripled my lifetime racing total in this season. I'm thinking about taking the next couple weeks off to let the body recover and then get ready for long cyclocross season.
I lined up as our sole representative in the 1/2 race. 51 pre-reg for the 58-miler, and I think day-of shot it up to over 70. Wasn't expecting much from myself, as Saturday's ride( thanks all) was my hardest ride of the month. And I flatted on the way to the race for the first or second time ever. a big glass shard. I still made it to the race with some time to spare.

My fear was the race blowing apart on the first lap. Long-break riders Diolsaki, Ken Harris, Brian Breach, and Mike Margarite were all in the house. Surprisingly, the pace was pretty sane. And the biggest problem over the early laps, were splits--someone about 20 guys back would open a gap on the hill for some reason and the second group would chase for a mile and get back on.

Not surprisingly, my legs were pretty sore. I was trying to save energy everywhere I could and think about how I could get into a break. Bigger problem: poor position. I was too intent to relax to move up at hte times when I should have. Got in a few moves, but I knew they'd have to be big, like 10 guys or a 20-rider split, in order for me to get away.

the move came a little after half-distance I think. I wasn't at the front and when I saw it, there was no way I had the legs to jump across. Karl Rahn was riding by me and he turns to say, "hard race." I didn't think the speed was high, but my legs were toasty.

Got nothing at the end. Checking the ride data, I think Karl was onto something. My average speed was 26.8mph for 61 (not 58 as advertised). My normalized power was lower than it was for the first 3.5 hours of Saturday's ride. I don't regret not saving anything for today--this was training, good fatigue-building.
I'm snakebitten in these PP races lately. 3rd race in a row I've either flatted out or got dropped behind a crash in the field.

4/5 race. Yesterday, on the first lap as we were passing the Kissena meeting point, there was some kind of bad bike-handling, goofy squirrely-ness happening mid-pack - one unattached dude was all over the fucking road. I tapped my brakes ever so lightly to try to avoid and the guy behind me clipped my wheel. I managed to stay upright, but he went down in a heap on the grassy triangle. In the process, he managed to shear off my tube valve - end of my race. I shuffled back to see if the guy was OK - thankfully, just a few dings, nothing serious.

But, another 5:45 a.m. wake up call for barely a lap. Arrrgh!
must agree re: confusion of 4/5 race! 1/2 the lead group was inquiring if we were on last lap or 1lap to go on (ultimate, odometer clearly indicated 1lap to go)final descent. so wasnt on front of train ar start finish. still, had a blast with Kissena riders esp. as Wei egged me on to 'keep the speed up' over top on lap 5/6. looking forward to a bit more team coordination...sure beats riding alone ;>
I appreciate the Burrowes brothers putting on yesterday's PP race. The more races the better, as long as they're safe and well run. MP summed up the race pretty well. I'll add that he and I were both pretty aggressive early trying to get into breaks, and we usually alternated so if MP was in a move that got brought back, I'd go with the next one. Unfortunately, I think we paid for all those attacks when the winning break went and we had no one in it. One early break I bridged to looked promising. There were about 20 guys and we had a big gap, but there were too many passengers, and the field was still fresh for the chase. It didn't last long. I was in a 2 man break on the 1st prime lap (lap 4 I think) and we got caught about 300 meters from the line. I was pretty cooked and that's when the break went. Wasn't smart of me to work in a 2 man break with 10 laps to go, but the other guy was working hard so I figured I would also. Thought I'd at least try to win the prime and maybe some guys would bridge and we could stay away. Not even close. Mike and I both tried to chase and bridge a few times but we weren't getting much help. Renee tried to get across also but couldn't. It seemed like a fast race because it started fast and there were a lot of early attacks. I had 26.7mph average. Disappointing race.
Btw, someone (supposedly from the masters field) posted on NY Velocity that the cat 3 break caught the masters. The masters pace car tried to neutralize them but they wouldn't listen because there was a breakaway in the masters field and if they neutralized they figured they'd never catch the break. According to the post, the cat 3 break wound up riding 3 laps with the masters field and getting a nice rest. That jives with what Steve Marmo (cat 3 winner) told me after the race. He said they caught the masters but after they passed them the masters came back and passed the break and it got all messed up. He didn't mention riding with them for 3 laps, but it kind of adds up.
@ Lenny, I just saw that. Jermain Burrows posted (or someone using his name) posted that they should have been DQ'd but nobody reported it to officials. I doubt the officials would have DQ'd anyway. This makes sense considering the gap was small for many laps and then exploded at the end (maybe after they got a little breather?)

In retrospect, we raced very well considering we had 3 guys in a 75 guy field. Wojciech pulled his hamstring on the 2nd lap and had to drop out. BH was bringing guns to a knife fight for this one.

I wouldn't hesitate to sign up for more cat 3 only races in the park. At the same time, it is a bit easier in a way to just wait for the Breech / Diolowski attack and try to respond.

Mike
MP - I agree they'd never DQ for that, and probably shouldn't. You'd have to have a really good pace car driver who knows what's going on and warns the break to get out of the other field. I don't think they had a grip on the fields, and 4 fields is just tough at PP which is why Charlie I doesn't have 4. While it's not good sport, I don't think it's as bad (or dangerous) as attacking from the jogger's lane. I didn't know about Wojciech. Too bad.
