A few of us drove up to Vermont for Killington Stage race this past memorial day weekend for a few days of racing, BBQ, & team tomfoolery. 

Would be awesome to rent a house for GMSR this year (Fri Aug 30 - Mon Sep 2)!

@JohnOlsson has an android... sorry you all had to see that.  Not sure if I will be able to race GMSR, but I will start looking into it!  Vermont is gorgeous, so if you're in decent shape and can take the time, I definitely recommend.

Good afternoon, any additional interest for GMSR?  We're gearing up to make it out and will be looking at housing shortly.  Niall is an "in".

We booked a solid AirBnB in Sugarbush right near registration and the TT. There's an open bedroom if anyone makes a last minute decision to race. Registration closes next Tuesday!

GMSR is a killer experience.  This is the second time I'm flying up to do it.  I might actually be competitive this year, we'll see ... 

If you're sitting on the fence, come join and extend your road season now that Floyd and PPark are done!  And if the racing and summertime in Vermont doesn't strike your fancy, post-race Ben & Jerry's , Hillstead Farm Brewing, and swimming holes should.

Speaking of being competitive ... anyone have a loaner TT / aero helmet? I will take all the free seconds I can get I wear a medium size in POC / Giro.

Thanks!  Weather is great.  Niall and I had the TT yesterday, finishing mid-pack.  It was the fastest TT ever at GMSR with the winning time over 1 min faster than last year ... a good tailwind helped out.  Niall and I finished 2:12 and 2:37 back from the winning time done by a new CRCA rider Taylor Delhagen, smashing the field with a 0:37 gap btn him and 2nd place.

Updates? Would love to hear...

Niall asked me on the drive back from Vermont what went right.  I started speaking and he interjected, “I said what went right.” Point well taken. 

So the right things:

The Field:  Something is in the water.  Compare times of past years and this field brought it.  Taylor Delhagen raced his second race ever and won everything.  TT by 37 seconds.  Queen stage by over 7 minutes.  Soloed the crit. He likely would have won the 3’s.  Without him still the fastest GMSR.  I personally have gotten faster but so did everyone else. 

TT and Queen Stage: PRs on both.  The TT I felt surprisingly OK and (gulp) enjoyed it.   The Queen stage I knew it was just a matter of time before I was dropped on Mid Gap but I kept it going found a group recover with in the flats before Baby and App Gap and finished my best time by over 8 minutes.

Staying upright:  Rubber side down for everyone.  Not one crash in any of the races.

GMSR: I got to hang out with a great teammate for 5 days and watch him crush it! Niall booked a great place, and this race is the pointy tip of organization racing stoke. 

Things that didn’t go right:  Getting dropped on the circuit. The leaders smashed it up the hill, Scotty tried to play, Scotty blew a gasket, Scotty couldn’t hang. Demoralizing.  Getting dropped on the crit.  It was a rainy and windy one, I slipped a tire pre-riding the course and timidity won the 1st few laps, lost all my places and was pulled about halfway through. 

Upon reflection though, I had the best outcome possible.  But for one race in Mid-August, I haven’t pinned up since July ’18.  For me GMSR wasn’t the season-ending capstone as it’s likely intended but rather the spark to get the feel back again.  The past 18 months have been filled with so much change (getting married, new city, newish job) that I didn’t ride a bike for nearly 5 months and also had to take off almost 5 weeks of prime summer training, which basically meant an 8-week setback.  So being able to play bikes this weekend was still amazing.  Hopefully see some of y’all next year in Warren, VT.

^great perspective Scott. Frankly an event that leaves you with more stoke than when you started is a win. It's a marathon and we need all the motivation we can get.

Also double awesome that everyone came out of it rubber side up.

Got it, would have been rad to race together - I'm sadly a cat4 lifer.

GMSR is always around when the pre- school year meetings start so I don't think i'm going to be able to swing it unfortunately 

Wow I'm glad I check the forums randomly, didn't know it was officially on. Maybe I'll send this race as a tune up for Tour of Gila. the idea of the insane amounts of east coast oxygen and an only cat 2 field sound like butter, plus seeing y'all would also be pretty sick.

Not a fan of climbing... But a fan of racing. So if anyone is driving... I'll be into doing this. Specially the crit 😬

The crit is awesome.  So long as you like technical circuits with a big-ring hill.  I happen to be such a person.  Positioning and cornering skill is important throughout.

The circuit race, last time I did it, was fairly flat, save one big hill.  If you're in decent shape for your category, even a weaker climber should be able to sag climb it--start near the front and slowly fade as the climb goes on.

THere's no getting around that fact that the road race is brutal.  

I'd love to do it again.  Just don't think that kind of time necessary is in the cards for me.  At least for another year.

For those considering GMSR, they just sent out an email saying two more days to save $35 on registration.

Considering all the other costs associated with the race, this shouldn't be something that takes one off the fence.  

But, if you were intending to register, now might be a time

I desperately want to do this, but I know I won't have time to build fitness to race. There's always next year...

GMSR registration opens up this weekend.  According to the bikereg page you can get a refund if you register before June 14th and end up not being able to attend.

I'm going for it.  Anyone else in?
