Hey Folks,

Turns out I will be unable to make this race. I signed up for the 2/3/4 (Bs) both days (3:45PM start time). I can no longer make it, I can transfer the spot to another racer according to the race director, but I have to do it before Wednesday. Let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested.

A spot just freed up for the Saturday C race and I snuck in. Scrambling to figure out the logistics but I'll plan to head down tomorrow night. My season is starting earlier than I'd thought!

Hot dusty day. Brutal course, tons of turns, hammer climbs, the hardest sand pits Ive ever done. And i love the sand. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die everytime i came up to them. There were 4 of them back to back after 180 degree turns before each pit. Just brutal, Im still thinking about retiring from the sport. Wes and Jeff A in the morning cat 4 race and both seemed to have fun from their less desirable start positions. I think Jeff was mid pack ish in the results. In the 35+ open category, we had myself and Eloy starting two rows from the back. Ragot crushed it with a 7th place finish. I managed 45th out of 80-something starters. Not sure how Eloy placed. We earned a good dinner. I did not get lapped by winner Roger Aspholm, but I did have to race for over 58 minutes. That was cruel. Jim Feehan was racing in the 55+ category that started 1 minute behind us. For reference, the top 3 guys in that category passed me. Jim thinks he was top 10. Then in the 2/3/4 race Mike Perlberg put his back issues to rest for the day and seemed to finish in 35th ish. Konrad in King Kog kit, was around 50th ish. Brittlee was racing elbow to elbow for 6th place but I had to leave before I could watch the finish. Garrigan was his usual cool self rolling around. Somewhat bummed have to miss watching them race.

Started about 110 riders back out of 135. Finished 46. I'll take it for my first cx race of the season. Btw, 4x back to back sand lanes are the devil.

Well, at least one of us got in the results.

After racing my ass off, from the literal back of the field because several dufusses (dufi?) decided to crash right in front of me on wide, even pavement, my name magically did not appear in the results at all. Same thing happened to me at State Crit championships. I protest, and nothing. We'll see what happens in the next few days.

But more to the point. Holy moly Perlberg. That's an awesome result. Sorry I couldn't stick around to hear the tales from you and Todd, we had some Baltimore fish-seeing to get to.

Yesterday was my best cross result to date. Much better than my best mac placing (13th at whirlybird last year) and probably more importantly, I was in contention for the podium nearly the whole race.

The report is pretty simple. Lots of pre-riding, got the bike mechanically sound, good clean start, avoided crashes, and took advantage of others mistakes.

The course was hard today, but with longer more gradual efforts than yesterday. I started in the 20s, moved up to the teens, and settled in around 12th. The group was all still single file and steady. This helped me a lot. Fewer surges, less sprinting.

I picked off riders 1-2 at a time as they made mistakes, had mechanicals, or bobbled in the sand.

I made it 4th place, and made a push for the podium with about 2 to go, which was probably one effort too many. I conceded a few places but held off some charges for the top 10.

Very pumped with 6th. Bummed I forgot to pick up my prize, whatever merch it was.

Thanks for the cheering and mid race updates. It helps a lot. Excited for whirlybird and hpcx.

Lesson learned.

Using only 4 pins on your cross number is just asking for trouble. Fuck me. Despite the protest, the 2 visits to the officials stand, the assurance that they "got me," I'm nowhere on the results sheet for day 2.
