Workout Wednesday is back on tomorrow, June 26th. 6:30am GAP. The agenda will be race winning intervals (the perfect cure for not winning races), or perhaps a team time trial if there is sufficient attendance.

No worries, we'll be back at it next week. Hope you crushed your triathlon
sweet ride this morning

I recently started one of the Tim C. training plans, and was wondering how people usually fit the training sessions in with Kissena group rides and races.  I’d like to start joining some of the PP morning rides, but the training schedule has me riding 5 days a week with 2 rest days.  Would it be advisable to do the group rides on rest days?  Or keep the rest days and replace the scheduled workout with a group ride once in a while.

I assume this this depends on individual goals, just wanted to get a sense of how people balance the individual workouts with getting on the road with the club.

Thanks!
@RichPolk this is an excellent question that the board is weighing. One of the benefits that we're proud to offer members is Tim's coaching plan. They're excellent and will get you fitter, full stop.

Often, however, dedicating yourself to a personal training plan may mean conflicts with group training rides. Personally, I find group workouts to be fun, motivating, and an excellent way to communicate about race tactics, practice lead-outs, etc.  They're invaluable (*cough* plug for Workout Wednesday *cough*). Riding with people who are stronger than me makes me stronger.

My opinion would be to trade a day or two a week from your plan to participate in the group rides. Swapping a day on your workout calendar isn't going to wreck your training. A bit of flexibility is fine. Plus, what's the fun of having great teammates if you rarely ride with them?

Others may have a different opinion, and I hope they weigh in, but those are my thoughts.
@RichPolk I’m in the same boat. On Wednesday’s I typically trade my workout for whatever Will has on the menu for the day or I’ll do my prescribed workout and add an extra set or two with Will and whoever else comes out. My plan typically has active recovery on Fridays so Eloy’s Look Sharp is an excellent option for that (the pace usually is mellow and conversational with maybe a harder effort or two in there depending how everyone feels).

As far as weekends, I unfortunately haven’t been able to do any longer rides outside of the city lately between races and other obligations, but my plan typically has longer endurance/tempo rides, so once my schedule lets me, I plan on riding river road/9W for those workouts. Hope this helps/ see you out in the park in the mornings!

There will be days that are clearly labeled "Group Ride" ;)

More realistically, some general rules:
  • Depending on the training plan it is usually obvious, which are the hard/workout days, which are the easy days, and which are the rest days
  • Easy days are probably best to use for prospect park group rides, specially obvious for the prospect easy rides. Friday's looks sharp, Sunday's Redbeard loops are easy(ish).
  • Depending on a specific hard/workout day goals, you could replace it with a race or hard group ride, Will's Workout Wednesdays, or FBF Tuesday nights are hard (FBF is super hard)
  • Keep in mind, Not all hard days are the same, some workouts aim to better your aerobic systems (like long 20 minutes intervals) some aim to better your short anaerobic efforts, you want to do your best to stay close to your plan.
  • Also, worth mention, the biggest mistake amateurs make is going too hard on the easy days, so even if in a group, keep it mega mellow on the easy days
  • Rest days, are probably best off the bike or doing something else (abs, gym work, sleep, naps, etc)
  • Personally, I've found that hard specific workouts are better as a lonely pursuit, while hard loose workouts are best with groups/races, and easy days are built to ride with and make friends while eating ice cream.
  • YMWV
Let's go ride bikes.
