that's right, I've used it before..., but it feels a little weird, so we'll avoid it tomorrow, and just try to ride together as a group, we'll see how it goes
Thanks, Matt, Rob, Bobby, and Rich for joining. We did a few cool virtual easy central park laps, which felt busy but appropriate. Some learnings/comments for next week:
we want to use one of the "empty" worlds, so not so crowded
wearing the same jersey/hat/socks makes a huge difference
once we found our rhythm was easy to stay together
not using "keep everyone together" is better
will create a shared spotify playlist for next week
Will create another meetup for next week. Let me know if you wanna join.
I have not ridden in the park pretty much since I've been relegated to WFH. I'm hoping to get some solo rides at some point on the road bike but aren't sure of the park vibes. Obv not interested in going mid-day or on a weekend after hearing/ seeing wacky stories of people not really GAF about social distancing and such.
Has anyone been out and about in the early morning or late evening? Did it feel like it was okay to ride?
There's definitely better places to go. When I got for an afternoon slower ride I find that 3-5 is ok but after gets worse. Mornings are pretty normal. It amazes me the level of people not wearing a mask. It's mind bottling to see people act like a mask is making their leisurely bike ride so much harder. I found going north and hitting the avenues in Manhattan to be fun since they're are less cars and less people then the parks.
I went out on Tuesday, 5/5, last week, wearing a mask. Figured getting to the park before 6am would be fine, but by 7:15, there were few people wearing masks, and people running on the left moved into the bike lane so they wouldn't be around other runners, and people were running on the right, in the car lane, and when they approached each other, running in opposite directions, they moved into the middle of the lane, and since most riders were riding along the white line, this pretty much assured I was between maskless runners moving in both directions as I tried passing mostly maskless riders.
I'm reading conflicting reports that on the one hand, it's indoors where the infection spreads, and on the other, it's when people are talking that droplets hang in the air.
On top of that, a mask fogs my glasses so I can't wear them, and, well, droplets in your eyes.
So, yeah. 86F tomorrow. I have no solutions, and I'm busting to be outside.
I commute everyday 6am and back at 3pm ,my solution is simply stay on road with cars. Bike lanes are full of maskless people, trash and nobody seems to know the rules of the road or basic cycling etiquette. For now it's pretty safe on roads as they're fairly empty.
