Big important note: Good groups ride two abreast or single file.
And here's about a minute of a perfectly executed rotating paceline. Including a rider skipping turns staying the back.
Thanks for sharing Eloy, what I found interesting from that clip from Tour of California was that the second rider in the line that's moving up doesn't just stop and wait for the first rider to move to the other line, it almost looks like they're moving over to overlap. Makes a lot of sense when you see a video of it but I didn't intuitively do that last week. Certainly the other big thing is fighting the urge to surge when when you get to the front of the line.

Next training ride I think it'd be great to go over the common signals and things to think about before setting out on the loop. Feedback during the ride is also great.
That's correct, you can safely predict that you are gonna take the lead and you want to keep the momentum going, similarly, the rider leading the slow line, they want to be on the wheel of the next rider as soon as possible.

A few other notes on rotating, thru and off, pacelines:
  • If you need to say something, it is usually better heard if you speak from the fast line to the slow line
  • Eat/drink, etc, on the slow line
  • Skip turns if feeling tired
  • There will be moments of chaos: Keep pedaling. (Good advice for pacelines and life in general)
Let's go ride bikes!
Training Thursday
6:30am @ GAP
Given the air quality issues (thanks Canada!) we've been seeing, we'll use tomorrow's training ride to get some more pacelining/group riding practice in.

If you haven't already, take a second and check out the videos Eloy shared above.  They do a great job of showing and explaining good group ride and paceline form and etiquette.

Come ride bikes.
sorry to do this folks, but the aqi isn't much better from yesterday; everything I'm seeing says it's still over 150.  I'm going to call off the training for today.  Stay indoors and enjoy some miles on Zwift.
Kissenistas! While conditions are improving, I am just gonna go ahead and call it, we'll skip look sharp tomorrow morning and regroup next week on June 16. Stay safe.
Training Thursday
6:30am @ GAP
Let's pick up where we left off.  Tomorrow's training ride will be pacelining/group riding practice in.  Likely pick up to a higher pace.

  • We'll ride as a team, two abreast, taking turns at the front, but crazy town easy for about 90 minutes, mostly chatting about de tour de suisse and weekend rides
  • If late, just stop and wait, we'll orbit around.
  • See you then!
On looking sharp:

some photos from today

No Training Thursday tomorrow.  The forecast is calling for chilly, rainy, and windy.
Team Train Sharp Thursdays: let's get some pics/footage of training action posted here and on SM. Some KCC race action pics would be nice too.

Perhaps not a pro look, but this outfront phone mount is genius: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKEmft15fy0
I came looking so sharp this morning😂
@Mark Taylor I bet you did :(
Tomorrow for Training Thursday we're gonna start a little earlier at 6am @ GAP.

We'll being doing a fun little breakaway/group chase drill.  Here's how it'll work:

At the crosswalk at the 15th entrance (top of the downhill), 1-2 riders will attack.  Their goal is to make it to the top of the hill without getting caught.  The rest of the group will soft pedal until just past the triangle at South Lake Drive (the entrance at the bottom of the downhill).  The group will be rotating with the hope of pulling back the attacking riders.  The chase group should do their best to keep all their riders together.

When either the attacking rider(s) are caught or we reach the top of the hill, we'll soft pedal/stop and re-group.

We'll do a warm up lap where I'll point out the attack and breakaway points.  We'll do this drill for 3 laps, take an easy lap, then repeat for 3 more.  I'm hoping everyone gets a chance to attack.
Can't make it b/c i'm dealing with an injury but that sounds dope, hoping there's a good turnout
Wish I could have been there. That sounds like just the thing. I, too, am impatiently waiting to heal enough to ride. Also, get my bike repaired...

I'm stuck out of town due to car trouble, so I won't be able to lead Thursday training this week.  Still get out there and ride.  Hopefully I'll be back next week.
