I'm a fan of rollers. I'm a fan of roller racing.



I'm writing to see if there's an interest in having a club-only night of roller racing.



I see it as both racing and training. The reason is not to hang out and drink but train. So for those who haven't done it before, it would be an opportunity to try. And for those who have, an opportunity to see what racing them is about. If you've never tried sprinting on nearly resistance-free rollers, you'd be amazed how fast your legs go around. And how much focused non-effort it takes to stay upright when sprinting.



I want to keep this simple to make participation easier. So no track bikes. Road bikes only. Max gear will be 53x15, 52x15, 50x14. Efforts will be either 500 or 1000 meters long (500 meters will take 15-25 seconds, 1000 about twice that)



I've spoken to Dave Perry about roller rental, but it's pointless unless we have a space.



So, first off, does anyone have access to a free or cheap space we could set up rollers and mill about? four racing rollers and probably have four sets of rollers in addition.

How were they?

Contrary to what they posted it was not roller races, it was GoldSprints, Kreitler rollers with fork mounts, and some KHS single speeds with freewheels, and pedals with toeclips and straps . Since everybody was using the same equipment it meant everything was relatively equal.

There was no real organization of things like heats, or brackets. So it was mostly just head to head races that didn't have any real standing on an overall final placing. Everything was either 250M or 500M standing starts sprints. I think there are some interesting races you could do with that setup, up that are not just head to head sprints.

Jim put in some great races, and actually had a tie with one opponent. When you're counting to the hundredth of a second and you get a tie, it is kind of a surprise. The other guy got a faster start and started fading around 350 meters, and Jim just ran out of "road" in order to catch him. 1 more meter and it would have been a win for Jim.

I raced 5 times against 3 different opponents, and won all but one. It says a lot about the competition if somebody like me can consistently win against what hipster Brooklyn has to offer.

After-wards I spoke with Phil who is one of the owners of Building on Bond, and is a Cat 5 on Speedwell racing, and it seems like this is going to be a regular feature of the winter months there since the team's coach has the goldsprint setup, and Phil has the space for this kind of event.

Anyone racing this? For those not familiar, track bikes are faster than road bikes. A 51x14 gear is the max you can ride. I'm trying to figure out how I can make it.

A contribution of $20 or more is required to reserve a spot.

Contributions to the Chipin go to the Century Road Club Association Development Fund,a 501.c3.
The funds, minus expenses to put on the roller race, will be used for youth programs at the armory.
In case the armory programs do not come to fruition, the funds will be divided between the CRCA Junior Program and I Challenge Myself.

A portion of the money, to be announced, will be tax deductible.

CRCA is the sponsoring club and Mike Green is the event promoter. Dave Perry is providing the rollers.
