Three notes

First, @KevinWomack hope you heal up quickly. I’ve had some similar injuries MANY years ago. It sucks. Take the time needed to heal fully

second, the pictures of Kevin’s son are absolutely adorable. He doesn’t seem put out that you’re in bed. Send more baby pics. Speaking of which I haven’t seen Matt’s baby pics either. Can we get them in mini Kissena jerseys?

third, I am impressed by how this club steps up in a crisis (not for the first time, unfortunately). Kudos to Dave and Eloy helping Kevin all the way to the hospital. Probably nothing worse than feeling alone when you’re in shock and your lungs are filling up with blood (don’t ask me how I know)
Someone laid the Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack over it.. I’m recovering but not quite at Wolverine pace….

Kevin, I'm so sorry you had this hard crash. I hope you recover soon!
Friends,

During my annual physical exam in early July, my physician detected a mass in the mid-abdomen while checking for an aortic aneurysm. I reached out to my oncologist at MSK, where I’ve been in remission for seven years, to investigate further. After undergoing CT scans and biopsies, I was diagnosed with stage 1 follicular lymphoma.

Fortunately, it's an early stage disease, and I’ll be treated with monoclonal antibodies and radiation—an appropriate and effective approach for this stage. Sadly, this means no cyclocross this fall, but there’s always next year.

Take good care of yourselves!!

T

Good luck with the treatment, Thierry, glad it was caught early. We are here for you.
Thank you Eloy, I know you guys will be here for me.
All the best Thierry!
Stray strong brother , my thoughts are with you Thierry
Best wishes for a full recovery, and back on the bike soon!
When I read "follicular lymphoma" I was hoping it was just a ginormous ingrown hair.

Wishing you a successful treatment and speedy recovery, Thierry.
Thierry

What a blow. It’s great that you caught it early and don’t have to resort to chemo 🤞. On the other its gotta be disappointing given that you’ve been riding a lot and probably had some good fitness. Hopefully that fitness will give you the stamina to better handle the treatment.

Will miss you at the cross races but hope to catch up on a ride soon. Hope your recovery goes as smoothly as possible
Theirry,

I'm so bummed to hear this. Very glad they caught it at stage 1 though! Maybe talk to the oncologist and see if they can throw some of those Ferrari drugs into the mix so you can come back even stronger?

In all seriousness though, it can only be good that you have been keeping yourself fit. Please keep us posted.

All the best,

J
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your words of encouragement. This year has been  difficult—between my own health challenges and my oldest child being in rehab for the past eight months due to severe drug addiction.  I’m fortunate to have support from many corners, including my partner, family, and friends. I truly believe that, in the end, everything will be alright.
Hey @Thierry Bonnaire, glad they found this early so good luck with the treatment, fingers crossed for you. Hope you are also feeling better too @LennartZandbergen

Obviously less serious than Thierry but wanted to give you an update on my recovery as you have all been so great in helping me and reaching out since the accident.

The ribs are feeling better all the time, the one that totally snapped at the top (left of the clavicle break) isn't realigning but it will heal itself, the callouses will grow, it will connect & solidify I'm told.

After 2.5 weeks the collarbone break was too far displaced to heal so they decided to put in a plate. I had this done yesterday. Feels like someone hit me on the arm and neck with a baseball bat. I'm pretty much on Oxy/Tylenol/Ibuprofen 24/7.

Hoping the pain will have gone by next week and will try to get on the indoor trainer. It will probably be another 8 weeks before I can get out on the road.

How it started...

How it's going...

Bionic Kev! That does sound thought on the feeling post plate, but Little by little getting better all the time!
“We can rebuild him “

Your doctor is going to charge your yearly physicals as a mechanical inspections from now on
Thanks, Kevin! Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery. The plate in my right clavicle has been going strong for 13 years so hang in there!!

I haven't been on a plane since my titanium plates were installed.

However, I did pass through a metal detector.  It was set off.

Definitely the wrong thread but I've spent quite a lot of time in airplanes the past few years... finished my instructor certification last summer.

Titanium?!?!!?! My plate is stainless steel.. 😢

Traveling this week, will let you know! I flew last week, before the surgery, and can confirm wearing a sling is a great way to get to board first (with all the others that require medical assistance). May still use this post recovery… 😉
Crash in Central Park right @ @mugwump 's favorite crosswalk around 8:20am. Dog ran onto the road and the cyclist hit it doing ~15-20mph I'd guess.

He was on the floor for a while, broken collarbone. The guy races, had a chip on his front fork, no team jersey though.

This is one of the (other) main reasons not to ride round CP after 8am...

I nearly had two different squirrels try and take me out today....

Clearly, you miss the park life.
As several of you know, I broke my collarbone during last weekends masters race at charm city cyclecross in Baltimore. As JP put it, I have now joined the broken collarbone club.

The crash occurred on the second lap of the race coming down a steep, bumpy descent. I’m not really sure what went wrong given I had pre-ridden the same descent the day before eight times successfully essentially, I took a little bit of a different line and ended up going over the handlebars and landing directly on my shoulder. Ironically, the promoters social media got a picture of me, looking like a total noob.

I want to give a big shout out and thanks to Eloy who after he finished his race took me to the emergency room where we spent the next six hours. So I have a pretty significant displaced fracture that’s gonna require surgery. Part of me. Hope I could get it there, but it would require me staying in Baltimore for several days and I don’t know how I would’ve gotten home so instead, Eloy skipped his race the next day on Sunday and drove me back to Long Island. He was incredibly helpful and I don’t know what I would’ve done without him. I think this is the third time this year that Eloy accompanied a Kissena member to the ER after a crash. Kudos to him

Even though it’s been pretty clear that I need to have surgery, I’m not scheduled for surgery until Thursday the ninth. That will have been 12 days after my accident. The first surgeon that I saw had no room in his schedule due to the Jewish holidays. The second surgeon that I saw was going away on vacation finally, I got an appointment with somebody who wasn’t going on vacation, but the earliest I could get in for surgery was Thursday. Had I known this beforehand? I would’ve probably been trying to meet with several surgeons at the same time. I didn’t expect it to be such a challenge

To add insult to injury, no pun intended, when I went to the pre-surgical visit Friday afternoon they told me I need cardiac clearance, although I just learned that my cardiologist is fully booked and going on vacation this week. The idea that I may have to push back surgery is making me very grumpy. Actually it just pisses me off.

What I wouldn’t do right now to just be able to go out and ride my bike on a beautiful day. At least I know that once I have the surgery, I’ll heal up OK and be able to ride with you guys again

I had really been looking forward to cycle cross season this year. My fitness was good and I was looking forward to battling with Eloy and Thomas Feehan in the club but also Marc Bertucco and James Reeder. I’m going to miss all the friendships an atmosphere at the cross races, but I guess there’s always next year
