I'll be there volunteering at the registration table, still not 100% sure if I'll race.
I'll be there - work's been keeping me off the bike for the last week so the legs are fresh and the belly is full... we'll see how it goes!
@AlexandervanHatter

Like the spirit.  put in a few short, sharp efforts if you can before the start, like a hard ascent of the hill in Prospect or a few sprints.  Sometimes super-fresh legs can be a little blocked.

I'm not going to be there in the morning.  Feeling I should postpone; I used to love racing in the rain, but lately it hasn't been loving me back.

Results?  Bros?
Stories?  Tales of success and woe?
Alex was the sole Kissena racing. I'll let him report on his experience.
He, Eloy and I helped with registration. It was a gloomy, chilly morning, made worse when a steady rain started 1/2 hour before race time. Big turn out, especially 1,2,3's. Exciting to watch. Big breaks/chases in the 123's and 5's. Lots of shivering, muddy riders post-race.
After registration I marshalled at the triangle 1/2 way down the hill. It's a big entry point into the park for runners and dog walkers, so I was kept busy alerting people that there were bike racers heading their way. It was crazy town. I was roundly cursed by a lady with 2 dogs who told me not to fucking tell her what to do as I tried to get her to wait as the Cat 5 pack barreled towards her. She crossed in front of them and continued to curse me, bike racing in the park, and bikes in general before disappearing into the mist. An elderly gentleman with giant noise cancelling headsphones wandered in and out of the bike lane, oblivous to my shouts and whistles. A large, leashless dog ran back and forth across the road for a while... most people were very reasonable, considerate and curious about the race. I wore my Kissena gear, did my ambassador thing. Thought of Phil Maronilla, and how he was always marshalling with a big smile when he wasn't racing.
I was inspired to train harder, more regularly, so that I too can race bikes again. I went home, changed clothes and bikes and rode up to Piermont. The weather got crazy on the return, around the Intrepid. Torrents of sidewise flying hail until around Christopher street, accompanied by a drop in temperature. Throroughly soaked and freezing, I pedaled the remaining miles home as hard as I could to keep my core temp up. Fun!

Joe, Eloy and Alex thank you for repping KCC. Can't wait to hear the race report from Alex!

FYI that lady is notorious - she's has at least one or 12 outbursts per season at the races.
if it's the lady I think and suspect it is, she's a licensed NY attorney some how.

The pictures I saw on social media looked gnarly, can't wait for the race report Alex!
Strangely the best weather of the day likely happened during the race and morning. Right before during registration it got gnarly.
N00b to volunteering here. I'd like to volunteer at the April 7 race, and then race Cat 5 the same day. Am I right that if you are racing, you don't have to pre-register, or is there a method to register with some kind of code in order to secure a spot in the category?

I looked through the forum and found a few old posts that seem to suggest you can volunteer and race in the same category that day, I just wonder about race number, getting into the roster for results, etc.

Many thanks
Correct, you don't need to pre-reg if you are planning to volunteer.  There will be a link to fill out a google form that is sent out the week of the race.  It'll be posted here and on Slack, so keep your eyes peeled.

Looks like it's serious experience for us.

No one in the V's though.

And no 1/2/3's.  Not for me this week.  I hesitated.

Results?  Bros?

Today's excuse: My legs were not great after yesterday and I was already mentally prepared to pull the cord halfway through. I was feeling pretty good and the field was not moving particularly fast. A few squirrelly folks in the field but otherwise it was nice racing with friends old and new.

I rounded the park to see what crossings weren't covered and stumbled across one where a procession of older folks were about to cross to hold early morning Easter service in the park. I got really nervous because it was about 30 people and they were moving very slowly. Luckily I knew the 3/4 field just passed so I did my best to slow down the regular park riders. As I watched the fields zip by it was pleasant hearing them off in the distance singing hymns. I loved seeing this juxtaposition of communities enjoying the park in their own ways.

Coffee and chilling with friends afterwards. Picked up two fruit loaves at hungry ghost for an Easter egg hunt party.

See you at the next one!

It was my first road race since last April so I took the first lap easy, got my bearings, then realized I was DFL and got on with it. I followed an attack on lap 2 past the temple and went up the road with former Kissena Nathaniel. His teammate on ROR was in Yellow so I hoped they'd control the front and we could stay away for a lap or two, but Nathanial never flicked the elbow and and by the climb we were back in the pack. For the rest of the race I tried to stay towards the front or near Pat and Eloy. On the last lap coming into the hill Pat found a hole on the right side, told me to get on his wheel and towed me to the front and into amazing position. Unfortunately someone came up my right and dipped into the joggers lane, swung in front of me and hit bars with someone else. Luckily they stayed up but slowed that side badly. I burned what I had left to try and move up over the top and then picked off a few extra places on the run into the line to finish mid pack 2 seconds off the winner.

Coffee after the race as always was a highlight
Not much to report on my side.
  • 70+ racers in the 3/4 race
  • Matt, Patrick, Dave, myself representing Kissena
  • Max B. representing on the Cat 5 race
  • First couple of 3/4 laps are mellow ish
  • The we get the bell for a prime, and then we get it for the kom, and then we get it for another prime, and you can see my HR peaking every one of those up the hill, 3 laps in a row, ouch, then the lap right after is a little more chill, but mega attacks happen on the hill, so you know 4 times in a row, full ouch, but wait then we get the last kom bell, so five in a row...
  • full where is the fitness?!? nowhere
  • 5 hard laps, yeas!
  • thankful that the second to last lap is mega chill up the hill...
  • From then, is just about keeping it safe
  • I see at some point Patrick is all like leading out Matt, Matt is all like "on the wheel"
  • They hit the hill in a good spot, just read the report above for Matt's POV
  • Matt will eventually finish mid pack, w Patrick and myself safely a few seconds behind
  • Lots of room
  • Hungry Ghost Coffee therapy always a highlight
Let's go race bikes!

Glad to be back out there after a long hiatus. Felt pretty good except I clearly need to do some intervals to get back into race shape. I was going to put my go pro on saddle, but I couldn't get the mount to stay put so instead I got video of butts. Here are a bunch of screenshots.

Got some nice lighting at moments when the sun was rising. Got Eloy sitting up. Got lots of butts

530a - generally an hour before start time. I'll see you there.

But the dark kit hides my taco gut so well.
And I thought it was your equivalent of the Boonen tights rule
