Anybody know anybody who has done this? Sounds crazy, but then again we've got plenty of that to spare here. Just the sort of thing a motivated team of hammerheads might smash into tiny little pieces... Just sayin.
Jules - you should totally take your Battenkill smashing skills out there and attack Dirty Kanza in 2013. Just think, Battenkill is around 1/3 the size of Dirty Kanza, its a warmup race ;)

I've read about it before - and its on my way way out there on my possible list for 2014 (the 2013 one is right after my wedding, can't make it).

D2R2 (this August, Massachusetts) - would be a good "preview" event that you (or others) could do. Its 3-ish hours driving distance away, and similar levels of abuse (lots of elevation, bad roads, high mileage, etc).
It is easily accessible in terms of travel, and it will probably gives you a good idea terrain wise if the Dirty Kanza is your cup of tea (before you register and fly out to Kansas).

Do D2R2 !

Seems like an awfully steep entry fee for a few xeroxed maps and no support. Is Dieter getting a cut of this?

Bump.  Thinking about goals for 2014...

Love it.

"If something goes wrong out there, you’re fucked."
I am totally down with the Oregon Outback ride. Not this year but maybe next......
Dirt.  Ha.  Dirt is nothing.  I give you deep, deep snow, frozen rivers, cold, cold temperatures, and the occasional moose.

Anybody else having fantasies about a KCC DK200 2020 team?

If I were free from any family obligations.
would love to do a long gravel event with a crew -- but can't say that I'm personally that excited about riding DK200 specifically, how about some of the other 100ish miles events, like Raspuntsina, Gold Rush, Lost and Found, Farmer's Daugther, etc, etc...

Is not just the 14 hours that would take to do DK200, but finding the commitment to training those long hours, etc...

In my mind the training is about the same for 100 or 200. It's a LOT of low intensity hours.

I say this knowing full well I may be off my rocker. Still... doing something that audacious with the KCC crew is appealing.
If money were no object, I'd do Kanza in a heartbeat.  Not because I love what I see, read, or hear.  But because it's a new place, a new challenge.

Otherwise, the local stuff looks plenty interesting.

I don't think the training is all that much to think about.  You go with the form you have, so long as you eat and drink, you'll probably be ok.  Put in a few crazy long days spaced out over the winter and spring and you'll have enough of a base.

Last year, New Yorker Rob Lattanzi went out and did it. He told me he just kept his heart rate in check and rode steady and he was fine.  This year, New Yorker John Podesta did it.  Broke his collarbone 37 miles in. I don't know if Podesta trained for it at all; he was there for work.
I have a buddy/ fellow teacher who has done some long tours (rode to Portland, OR a few years ago) has been chatting about doing DK200 next year. Crashing bikes combined with all the hype has me sort of thinking about it. Ive never done any big gravel rides but I think the idea of how simple it is is really intriguing.
