The finishing straight and the back straight are wide, the space between turns 1&2 and 3&4 not so wide.

I had discussed racing this and Hilltowns but have decided to skip BOTH due to the pile of work needed to be done in my studio.

Today, I went up to the Naugatuck Crit in, appropriately, Naugatuck, CT.  Rather than start a new thread, I'll write about it here. 

The course was a triangle, similar to the Tour de Parc course, with two 90 degree turns, and an uphill drag before the 180 degree turn.  The finish was approximately 400m beyond the 180 degree turn.  My race, the Cat 4s, did 28 laps, which equaled almost 25 miles.  The race itself was hard, but uneventful.  I went in a few moves.  All were brought back.  With 3 laps to go I positioned myself for the impending field sprint.  I held my position reasonably well, and finished fifth in the sprint.   I was pretty happy.  Also, I was tenth in the Rockleigh B race on Thursday, which I was also happy about.

Dan Hubbard, Rene, and I rolled into Stirling looking for a good time and that's exactly what Stirling had waiting.

After a quick warmup, Dan and I got some 35+ action while Rene soaked it in. A ridiculously slow start allowed a group of around 6-7ish to get an instant gap and never be seen again. A chase group got away somewhere around the 15 minute mark; sayonara bitches. Dan tried to bridge at one point I think. It didn't work out. With about 5 or 6 to go, I'm in the middle of the field, Durso and some other dude slot in right in front of me. Horace Burrowes immediately drops off my wheel. Turns out Durso was in the break and we've just been lapped. Horace dropped back to pull Johan (also in the break) up through the field, but he was too far back to matter. For a novel racer like myself, it was really cool to experience Crit tactics at this level. End of the race: Dan sprints for 20, I finish 33rd.

Rene lined up for the 123 race. This was going to be a good one. Hey, there goes a Mountain Khakis bro! Ooh, there's a Jamis dude. Wow, that's the guy from the Netherlands with the UCI license that Affinity is sponsoring for the summer. United and Mengoni brought their talent. Jersey was representing hard. Whistle blows, there they go, and it's strung out for the whole race. Euris wins every prime, except for a late one when a guy was soloing. Other than that move, nothing is getting away, and even that move got pulled back. United is doing a good job of keeping things close. Rene is slotted in the middle right where he needs to be. The pace up front is furious. A couple of times, towards the end of the race, it looks like the field is going to split, but they stick it out while guys fly off the back. 3 to go - AXA/Stans sets up a train. Jamis and Mountain Khakis are 4th and 5th wheel. 2 to go - AXA's dead, Jamis and Mountain Khakis are still up front. 1 to go - just past the start/finish, Jamis rolls off the front like a motherfucking champ and puts down a slow jam (in the form of Watts) for the rest of the field to groove to. He owns them for that final and most important of laps winning with about a 5 second gap; awesome. Khakis pulls out some super studly form to win the field sprint. Pollo Jr nips some chump at the line for 3rd. I wish I knew the 2 pros names. Rene finishes somewhere towards the back of the now decimated field; nothing to be ashamed of. What a killer race to watch.

The power trio of Rene, Hubbs, and I then line up for the Cat 3 race. This one wasn't as much fun. The small field (30) and lame tactics made it frustrating for me. United's B team did a great job of controlling the race. They had 5-6 guys and were the only ones there racing as a team. They chased down every move and then hit the brakes so that their sprinters, Johan and James Joseph, wouldn't have to do anything. Hubbard and I tried bridging and attacking a few times, but everything was short lived and brought back. The pack would then slow to a crawl because seemingly nobody had the gusto to counter or do any work on the front. The lulls got very sketchy. It was too slow. Field sprint - boring. James Joseph and Johan finish 1 and 2. Rene cramps for 13th. Hubbs and I roll in at 22 and 23. Whatever. I'm racing the 123 next year.

Super sweet crit. I'm hoping to keep this one as a mainstay on my calendar. 4 fast turns with short straights that won't blow you up. Get some!!! We did. Now it's your turn.
