Professional Dopers

I don't think it's keytones. Not enough bang for the buck. Pog is making the other guys look like children; that takes more than extra fuel. If history/other sports are any guide, it's always something simple and effective; either motors (I think unlikely) or O2 transport - either microdosing or janking with the testing.
While this should be moved over to the professional dopers thread, I've often wondered if the movement to ban ketones is because the claimed use gives cover for doped performances.

Certainly the MPCC must be pissed for a reason. If you could *possibly* get +3% in a TT, and recover like a demon in GTs (and feel better)? All for a 20K outlay for a team? Chuck in some new illegal PED and there's your head and shoulders champion.

I don't think they're seeing anything close to 3% from Keytones (fwiw). I think the MPCC is upset because keytones are insanely expensive and add another layer to the unfairness of un-capped team budgets.
^ Don't think the complaint from MPCC riders is around budget... Pinot: "the peloton now operates at two speeds”.

I think there are rivers of juice right now; just don’t think it is the keytones. unless keytones are a very effective masking agent
^ Agree about the rivers of juice. Corticosteroids will be banned in Jan. I hope the UCI have the courage to change the rules on GT nighttime testing—how cool would it be if they had some kind of glucose monitor type device?

maybe a social masking agent.  People are talking about ketones rather than the vector-changing goods.
My money is on microdosing and janking with the tests in that order.
^ 100% This. Nighttime testing (when there's a suspicion) during stage races please.

I mean, how good would it be to see 10 or 12 riders challenging for a jersey...

(Careful, those attacks might get you fired)
And then reinstated!
No doping, but WTF

Disgraced Running Coach Was Barred for Life for Alleged Sexual Assault

@eloy almost hard to believe that after pulling unethical and illegal shit for years, he was also an abuser.

Today's story in VeloNews was disturbing enough

https://www.velonews.com/news/road/no-doping-cases-in-the-2021-worldtour-reason-to-celebrate-or-time-to-worry/

I can believe someone said the following.  It's no wonder they wanted to remain anonymous

“I think for the majority of pro riders in the peloton, the last thing they’re worried about is if someone is doping or not,” the rider told VeloNews. “It’s very rare that we ever question a performance by someone. It [doping] just doesn’t seem necessary anymore to have success in the sport. We trust each other, and we trust the process.”
Great galloping Lycra clad nerf herders on carbon wheels. That’s a quote for the ages.

Big yikes right there

While I generally find Taylor Phinney pretty tiresome, this article makes me want to check out one of his podcasts

"Kuss, Pogačar, Vingegaard, Mas and Thomas setting the fastest times on the legendary climb since 2006."

This isn't necessarily doping, of course.  It's just some striking datasets and analysis.  If you click on the link below, you'll see charts of various riders best efforts.

"Kuss, Mas and Thomas came back and they finished together in a small group sprint, setting the fastest time on Alpe d’Huez since 2006. They climbed it in 39:12 min, pushing 6.08 w/kg, except Kuss, who did 6.12 because he did not draft as much but also did not respond to any accelerations. In 2006, Andreas Klöden and Floyd Landis did the famous climb in 38 minutes and 35 seconds. The record holder is Marco Pantani, who in 1995 set an unbreakable record of 36:50 with an estimated power of 6.80 w/kg – untouchable in today’s era."

"
Geraint Thomas won on Alpe d’Huez in 2018, but today he was faster by more than 2 minutes. In the 2018 Tour the pace was not that steady on the climb, but today Thomas’ arguably did maybe his greatest performance ever, considering how hard the stage was the previous day and the heat once again today."

Yeah , but the bikes are better and the kit is more aero :D
Dude, it's the doping.
Mt Washington is wiping all the records from the hillclimb...

I can't even.

After so many years of "hard" drugs like EPO, HGH, Steriods, Clenbuterol, etc it seems almost quaint to bust someone for Tramadol. I have no authority to rank-order the "severity" of any of these drugs but given the speeds the peloton are riding these days, Tramadol seems like a nibble on the toe of the beast.
During Quintana's early days in Europe, he had some freakish performances--I think it was a Tirreno-Adriatico stage when he attacked on the final climb in the big ring and made everyone else look like they were out for a spin, another time he did something like a 200km solo for the opening stage of I think Route du Sud--and extraterrestrial seemed fair to apply.

But these past several years, his performances were uneven.  Now, he was in the mix for the first time in ages, and he gets busted for Tramadol, which seems designed to only take the edge off of pain, not a vector-altering drug.

Where there is smoke, there is fire. I presume they just weren't as careful about masking the Tramadol as the other drugs.
I was reading up on tramadol's effectiveness, abuse, etc. and it's a kinda weird drug. The most interesting thing I read was that it hasn't been made a banned substance for WADA mainly because there isn't enough abuse of it in sports (obviously cycling was/is very much the outlier in this regard), which just seems so so backwards

It goes hand in hand with "finishing bottles" containing massive amounts of caffeine and other supplements. There are concerns about it causing more crashes but TBH, it does seem like the tip of the iceberg. Weird one to get busted for, for sure.
