Dennis is probably on my list of favorite riders. This sounds like a classic terrible spat with his employer, as most of us, I have gone thru a few during my career, I can't only imagine how extreme this must have gotten for him to literally quit mid "project"

Really strange , as i believe part of the team hiring Rod Ellingworth was to help further develop his GC aspirations

I didn't realize anyone was a Dennis fan.  

He's always struck me as a selfish rider.  He left Garmin/?? mid-season for a big-money transfer to BMC.  He thanked hard-working domestique Brent Bookwalter by attacking BB when Bookwalter was in a rare position to win a race at the USPRO challenge.  

He had both Ellingworth and McLaren on board at B-M.  While I dislike petro-fueled monarchies sponsoring a team, the setup seems ideal for Dennis, especially since it looks like Nibali is leaving and Dennis is talking about breaking the hour record next year.  

Maybe something else is up.

Today made the point to actually watch/listen to the stage while at work, this post is just to say how much I enjoy the Keenan and McEwen commentary. McEwen brings an insane level of nuance and respect to the race, but then too this amazing straight ahead attitude about being smart about pedaling and just fucking getting it done. It makes me yearn for long hard days on the bicycle.  So, let's go ride bikes!

Van Aert demo'd his leg on one of those U-shaped barrier links, looked like his leg took the full brunt of the impact. I hope it's not as bad as it looks.
If you get to see a stage of TDF, don't forget to bring some Absinthe a giant flag, a selfie stick and some safety flares.

Well that was impressive.

On a different note - what the hell happened to Tony Martin? He had a couple of bad crashes and has never seemed the same since.

Reading the quotes from Landa and (more significantly) Valverde it seems that Quintana's time as a Movistar rider are drawing to a close. I am sure someone will pick him up, but I don't know who. He has been poor the past few seasons and he doesn't seem to play well with others.

I would rather have Rohan Dennis on my team - he is selfish, spoilt and hot-headed, but he does have real talent when harnessed properly.
Quintana looks like a spent force.

He does seem a shadow of his former self. I always find it curious how some riders seem to have single seasons where they destroy everyone and then never seem to regain that form.

Kinda sucks for Movistar, clearly they have a crazy strong team, but maybe too many cooks, the change for Quintana might be good

-- btw, Quintana has won the Vuelta and Giro, and finished in the Tour podium three times, once while winning the white jersey, it all happened across a few seasons. Yes, he does not seem to be the same, but it wasn't a short bump for one summer, you can count in one hand the amount of riders with these kind of Palmares racing this tour (or racing at all)

My feeling is that 2nd and 3rd are SO far behind 1st it’s almost a different race.

Haha, agree on that, I think even the top pros agree too.

The distance from winning the tour to second place is almost infinite, even in the closest of margins. Ask Laurent Fignon.

That said, the combination of ride, smarts, form, and sharpness a rider needs to finish in the podium of a grand tour is also brutal, and almost impossible. (caveats for doping, obvs)

This is pretty strange. Neither rider seemed too sore about it after the stage, particularly Rowe who was the one pushed off the side of the road. Is this a French conspiracy? 🤔

Not a french conspiracy, while I totally agree that by stage's end they both seemed over it, they did push each other in a way that could have caused a crash. We can argue if a fine would have been more appropriate, but there's no way a race jury would see that footage and not intervene.
