Beginners Track Session and Sprinting Workshop, July

@Marc Bertucco - great to hear you're dusting off the track wheels at last! Sorry, I'm not too hot on how they divvy up the Masters racing at T-Town.

But...first things first, are you coming out to play this Sunday at the workshop? You should obviously warm up your track legs again at your local track before going to crush the opposition in another state...
Right then everyone, who's set for this Sunday?

In my head, this is what I envisage it'll be like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-OYKd8SVrI
With me as Cyrus obviously.

But seriously, we should be all set. 10am ish start - aim to get there about 9.45am. We have the track until 2pm. Check out kissenavelodrome.info if you need directions on how to get there.

Here's the attendee list I have:

Certain:

David Yang
Dave Sharma
Jeffrey White (56cm loaner)
Kayt Mathers (49cm loaner)
Edwin Ortiz (54 cm loaner)
Ros Knopov
Andy DS

Possible:

@mperlberg
@Jules
@Wilson
@JoshuaC

Guys?

Obviously anyone else welcome! There's several loaner bikes available.

The plan is for the first hour to be teaching basic skills of how to ride the track, first with an explanation with how the track "works", then some basic drills, before moving on to pacelines and some other fun exercises.

Then move to the sprinting part of the day. First I'll give a short talk on what track sprint events are all about - the essence of them and how you train for them, and how training on the track can benefit your road sprint (and how sprinting on the track differs from on the road). Then we'll do some sprint drills, including flying 200 metre time trial, standing starts, match sprints and then maybe finish up with some mock group races.

We have the track for quite a while, so I don't intend to rush anything. Lots of time to ask questions (and my favorite drill, aka sitting around) as well as ride.

Please remember to bring:

Helmet and your usual riding garb.
Towel (if you can carry it).
Lots of fluids - last Sat and Sun it was crazy HOT at the track , hotter than riding just outside. I guess the asphalt / concrete of the track is pretty exposed. No idea what the weather is meant to be like this Sun but guessing it's gonna be similar.
Sunscreen / hat etc. We'll put up a tent or two, but you'll still be out in the sun a lot.
Food / snacks as we're there over lunchtime. I wouldn't go over board though - you don't want to be seeing it again post-sprint, so whatever you use to graze on during long rides - bars, gels, fruit etc.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know.
I'll be there. Anyone else riding from bk?
Thanks @Kieran--sounds like a fun day. Crossing my fingers it won't be as stifling hot as it was last weekend.

@Wilson: I know at least @Dave S. and I are riding from Brooklyn. Unless he has any objections, I'd be happy to take the same route you and I did last time since it was super fast, and we only got lost once (a Queens miracle). Anyone else riding from PP area, message me and we can take it from there!

Also putting this out there: I'm planning on heading over to Tortilleria Nixtamal for some post-track $3 tacos after the clinic if anyone wants to join. It's just west of Flushing Meadows Park, so it should be a quick ride to carnitas bliss.
This is gonna be fun. Anyone who has reservations about participating because of bike availability let me know. I may be able to get my hands on a 54 and maybe a 56.
Bertuccos wheels are glued. No excuses....

Except I'm racing in PP on Sunday and have out of town guests coming over in the afternoon. But I am extremely appreciative of both Ragot gluing my wheels and Kieran running this workshop. Just another example of how Kissena is just better than other clubs!

God willing, I won't kill myself at T-town this Saturday. Andy, what kind of gear do folks use for the mass start events there?
Uhh... I'd say you won't need anything larger than a 92. You'll be fine.
Marc, shame you can't make it! But good luck on Sat. Look forward to hearing how you get on.

It'll be ideal training for the State track champs on Aug 11...
Yeah Marc, you are needed at States! we are trying to get Leahy  in the state champ jersey... we need your help!!!

Also just saw you inquiry about Masters and Rookies. They split the masters field up if there are enough guys. I havent been in a while, but generally i'd say the masters field is anywhere from 10 to 20 guys. Also it is kind of a fake masters field... i.e. 30 plus.

^ Sounds great @kayt!
My favorite Ebay seller. This guys sells used surplus NJS track stuff straight from Japan. super cheap!!! i got my cranks and wheelset from him.

going to share this in the deals and steals section too.

Wow, that is awesome! Some great stuff for sale there. $88 for a dura ace crankset, very tempting...
@mperlberg. Grab some of those cranks for yourself.
Weather Is looking good for tmrw!
Not going to be able to make it out to the track tomorrow :(  Have fun y'all. Looks like it will be gorgeous out in the AM.
When/where are people departing Brooklyn?
^just saw this.  a group of us are leaving from bedford & Eastern Parkway at 8:20.

Thanks @Dave--I messaged @Jeff directly a little bit ago. Hope he sees it and can join us!
I'm showered and fed and chilling in an a/c living room. Had such a great time today, tons of learning and adapting to trackie ways, including sock height. @Kieran thanks again for the tutelage, can't wait to get back out there and improve and race.
Sock height?
Endurance Track default to roadie rules... Sprinting 1" cuff max. No socks if you are really cool.

Why not just wear board shorts and Tevas?
We do in between efforts.
What to say about my day at the Kissena velodrome with my Kissena teammates?

First observations:

1. Andy did all the demos while we watched from the start-finish listening to Kieran narrate Andy's excellent technique (and point out his minor shortcomings).
2. Kieran makes track sprints look scary and susceptible to frame explosion. A bull on a bike.

Other observations:

1. Track bikes on a track are insanely fun.
2. Kayt can roll with all of us dudes and will shred her first ever race next weekend. You heard it here ... most recently.
3. Wilson intended to ride 100 miles yesterday. Wilson got lost and rode 140 miles yesterday. On his track bike. With stupid big gearing. Up Bear. And down Bear. And -- why not -- in the rain. And still made it out to the track. Barely. He did a lot of lying down. His tires sensibly reacted by blistering up like Schwarzenegger's face in Total Recall.

Most importantly:

1. Tacos Nixtamal is right by the track. The horchata is so cold it hurts the teeth. Exceptional. Exceptional.
bummed to miss the tacos.

Holy shit that was fun. Serious thanks to Kieran and Andy.  Sad to have to bail during the tremendous demonstration of standing starts.

Has the documentation of Kissena grunts happened yet?  because, again-- holy shit.

As Jeff mentioned-- Wilson rode something like a 54x14 to/from/up Bear.  Jesus.
Dave #96 is exaggerating.  Wilson only rode a 54x16 up and down Bear Mountain, to and from Brooklyn.  In the rain.  And then came to the track workshop yesterday.  Then immediately rode to work (on blistered tires) where he had to stand all day and lift heavy shit.
