Oh how I miss my AVD race comedy.  Prospect with 4 fields of overlapping fun and incompetent pace vehicles!  I haven't done this in 3 years, so I hope it doesn't disappoint.  $35 is a small price to pay for such discombobulatory clusterfucking.  I'm bringing my taser!

It's worth noting that with aforementioned "overlapping fun," "incompetent pace vehicles," and "discombobulatory clusterfucking," that staying near the front is even more important than usual in a park race. Why?

Because invariably, the dudes at the front, as soon as they get through traffic, attack or at least pick up the pace. And in best case scenario, you end up chasing harder than you want to, to get back to normal racing. In worst case scenario, you miss a split.

I may join in on the 3/4 field if the weather is too nasty to ride tomorrow.

I'm in 9th overall in the 1/2/3 series. No idea if this is a  paying place or not.

For the 1/2/3s a couple of quick tactical thoughts.

1. JP is 9th in the 1/2/3s, but 19th in the overall. Shame they don't give points for outside the top 10. He's one of our protected guys, but with this the last race of the series, we're in it to win it for KCC.

2. We might have 2 additional guns in Konrad and Ryan. Ran into both the guys today and despite flogging themselves on Alpine repeatedly, they might be in.

3. Lets race it to rip shit up and get a breakaway going. As always, right?

4. Let's not ride tempo at the end of the race to make it easy for Lupus and whoever else wants to sprint. This is to say, that if some junky 2 or 3 rider break gets away in the last few laps, I'm not riding tempo to bring it back. That's up to the fake teams who have sprinters. Now that doesn't mean we shut down our engines, in fact, it's going to take a lot of energy to be up near the front in the last laps, because we should try and lead someone out (Andy? JP? Ragot?) for a top ten should we fail in the A-mission of a breakaway win.

5. A word about breakaways. No matter who you are, if you are in the breakaway you ride it like you are going to win it. That means if I'm in a break with Molloy and Dioslaki and Chabanov, they can count on me to pull through like a wimp. If folks start shouting at you, block it out. Or remind them that because of your mere presence in the break, they've got the best team blocking for them.

Also, let's pay attention to numbers. If guaranteed money is up the road, e.g. 1 Kissena & 9 others, I'm inclined to force other teams to shut it down. Now, with those "not great" odds, I'm also inclined to want to try and get another KCC rider up there. So, if you can get away cleanly, and you think you can bridge, go for it. BUT...this is one you have to look back for frequently, because we don't want to pull the field up to guaranteed money. If the odds are better, 1 in 5 for example, then we get obstructive with our efforts at the front and actively block/disrupt.

UNLESS...a team or two gets together and has an organized chasing rotation at the front. Then the sporting thing to do is get right on the rear of that train and let them try. It's happened. Occasionally, United has been known to put two or three on the front, usually with a KCC or two mixed in and done an organized chase. Then we kind of sit back.

6. Be patient. If a move is developing off the front, and there are one or more KCC helmets up the road, don't necessarily jump over guys going to bridge up. If we've already got representation up there, then we want to give the move some breathing room to develop. Here's a trick, if guys are flying all around you: Count to 10 as you gradually ramp up to speed as guys are coming over the top of you. This way you'll be at full speed in plenty of time to be in the mix of the race, but not necessarily the dude who causes the field to say "oh shit, we gotta shut this move down, so and so from KCC is going."

7. The break before the winning move. Because if the aforementioned move stays out there for some time, but is doomed (i.e. it has me and a bunch of other yahoos in it) it actually means that the next move has a greater chance of success because no matter how weak a move, the longer it stays away, the more other guys have to tire themselves chasing it down. And the more tired they are from chasing me, the more likely they will have less energy to chase down one of our big guns.

Charlie managed to get the joggers lane situation worked out...I doubt that AVD will have. So yeah, that part is going to suck.

Most of you know this, but KNOW THIS. The nasty pavement at the top of the course? totally rideable. Nothing that's going to break your wheels. Other people won't know this though and will swerve dramatically to avoid. So you know, avoid those people.

I would love to join you guys tomorrow morning, but like last weekend, work and life are not very compatible with crack of dawn racing.  Bring home a W.

Dave I bought a good foam roller at Ride Brooklyn...it's got plastic at it's core and raised nubs to get deep in the muscle.  It's a good one and I use it most days to roll the crap out of my bands.

So, my race this morning ended early in a crash in the 4th lap. I'm not exactly sure what happened. Guy in front of me hit a cone, which I saw go back under my wheels. I felt my rear wheel kind of jam up and I started skidding and fell, along with the guy behind me. I think the rider behind might have been overlapping me and got tangled in my wheel. 

fuck. sorry to hear that TIm. That crack looks pretty bad too but I don't know a thing about carbon repair. 

Tim - that sucks. Calfee Carbon Repair can probably fix that. The'll just chop that whole section of frame out and bond in a new one. You'll have to ship them the frame for an accurate quote on price. They claim their repairs are stronger than the original structure.

Shit Tim! I was wondering what happened to you. Sucks about the bike, but glad you're Ok. Seems like you will have a bunch of options to repair that carbon.

Tim, glad to hear it's just the bike that's busted. I'd look into getting in touch with nick Iacovelli (look up swamp ghost carbon repair). You can keep it somewhat local and support a fellow bike racer trying to cover his entry fees. Dude has worked as a shop mechanic/team mechanic/van dessel for half his life. And he'll probably offer better turn around time than the bigger names.

Tim that sucks.  Paul Carbonara also does a ton of local carbon repair.  He lives a few blocks from the park.
