I blame Dowsett, he sucked us in with the old "Check out my bike" trick. Or... you know... ADHD. 

There's something kind of poetic about watching a guy gut through an effort knowing he's missed the target. I feel like that happens often in sports but usually it doesn't happen for 20 minutes. 

I guess if your going to do an hour record attempt , do it now , when the cycling media is desperate for stories

I think shooting for the record between November and late January is both about the racer having time to prepare without racing and cycling media looking for stories.  

I think Boardman set one of his records in July in an empty velodrome.  But then Wiggins did it may or june but his people made it an event.  

Then again, Tom Zirbel got nearly no attention for his effort, nor did Mathias Brandl.  If I have his name right.

I think part of the media hype was because he was doing it to raise money for charity. If you watched his youtube videos around it, there was always a minute or two spent talking about hemophilia and the work the Pfizer has done on the Hemo Heroes app
