I agree that no radios and an unwitnessed death of a rider are a bad combo. UCI needs to get it's head out of it's ass, cut the sock length bullshit out and make some changes that actually improve rider safety.

so tragic 

UCI is also getting heat for not DSQ MVdP for riding on the sidewalk for no apparent reason (especially from the Latvian Cycling Federation but they have a vested interest because their guy finished 4th). As all things in the world seem to be a complete and utter mess, at least the UCI being the absolute worst is consistent.

I absolutely do not understand how it's possible that at this level, not every rider has a GPS tracker and crash detection sensors that every Garmin/Apple Watch has these days. Helmets with crash sensors and separate crash sensors have existed for ages too and are not expensive at all.

I read somewhere that all World Tour bike have gps so they can be found in the event of a crash, but not U23 bikes

I didn't get why the Belgian mens team let van der Poel ride away with Vermeersch.  I thought that when Vermeersch was trading pulls with MvdP, he must be on a great day and will attack him on the final kilometers.  When MvdP went, Vermeersch didn't even accelerate one bit, so the idea he was on a great day was shot.  

The Belgian team had a huge advantage--four of them to cover one MvdP--but they didn't play that game at all.  They should have kept on sending one guy on the attack, draw out MvdP, then sit on him and the group chases back, and then another Belgian attacks.  And repeat the process until the Dutchman is worn out.  Four pretty good guys attacking in succession probably could have blunted his strength to the point that one of them could have finally broken him.  

Considering how popular cycling is in Belgium, how this was their home race, it was shocking that the team didn't win, didn't even come close.  I'd have thought the fear of not winning on home soil would have been incentive enough.  

Maybe MvdP is seen as basically Belgian.  Maybe they understood it was always about the money.  

Stuyven might be complaining because, of that group of four, he was probably the strongest.  He was working harder than the others to get something going after the attack went.

I get all that. but the team direction should have been easy. "don't work with mvdp! sit on!" 

there are plenty of times when a weaker rider should collaborate with a stronger rider. but when you have three riders close behind in a small group is one of those times. that of of the three could likely beat mvdp in a two-up sprint is another good reason.
