And remember @BlakeFoster is leading a new members ride right after the race so hang out for some easy laps and coffee & pastries afterward!

So far we have...

Masters
JP

4/5
Kevin
Eric M
Blake
Dave

Let's get some goals in place and plan on how to execute!

I am likely for the Masters -- practicing my mid packing survival strategies
Yes, down to discuss goals for the 4/5...what's the best way? Quick Google Meet?
Think we can just post here or slack tactics. @MaxBucksbaum are you planning to race?
yessir I'll be there
My goal is stay alive with the group through the race and don't blow myself up on the hills. If I can play a part tactically, I'm happy to, but I also want to make other teams work to chase breaks, so long as breaks don't get too far up the road (unless Max or Kevin are in it).
I'm planning to do some laps in PP tomorrow if anyone wants to join and talk tactics.  Will probably do ~2hrs mostly Z2 with a few opener efforts.  I wasn't planning on getting out super early, probably 9am but can be negotiated with :)
Weather is going to be dry but cold and windy. Looks like 31° at start time with winds above 10mph and gusts above 20mph.
i'm feeling relatively good from a fitness perspective; might just do the same as Blake to just where i'm at fitness-wise and handling-wise since i've primarily been riding indoors. if others can provide some potential ways I can help the team, i'm all ears!
First of all, with our numbers, we can't let any group get away without us.  We also need to limit any solo attack to no more than 30 seconds early in the race, and then do what we can to get it back.  Try to get something going a bit after mid-race.  If all else fails, ahve a last-lap strategy for delivering someone into a prime position halfway up the hill.

Not a bad day out!
Mini Race Report
  • We were 5 Kissenas in the 4/5's which was awesome
  • Managed to stay in the front 10-20 most of the race (~55 turned up)
  • Saw Dave covering some attacks, nothing really stuck attack wise the whole race
  • Lonely Hearts was slowing it up at the front for some reason
  • This was so slow on lap 3 coming up to the foot hill I decided to start another paceline on the right
  • Managed to get most of the way up at the front when people started to jump past
  • This became a split with ~8-10 of us including Max, i think we had ~5s going over the start finish line - nobody got organized though so we were caught by the downhill
  • Overtook the Masters who seemed to be having a chill day
  • Kept it steady until the last lap where it felt like we were relatively close together
  • Saw Dave attack off the front and followed the followers, didn't have enough for a counter though
  • Made it up the hill with a bit left in the tank
  • Last 200m, feeling ok, the right hand side of the road opened up so I ducked out put down some "power" but, effectively ate wind for the rest of the sprint, making up zero places
  • Rolled in around 20th I think
  • Also forgot to start my wahoo so no race recording :-/
Big Congrats to @MaxBucksbaum for his podium.

Fun day as always, see you next week!
Glad to read and see the success today.

I was going to start my season, but I've been fighting what might be a low-level cold.  I felt crappy Friday night, felt crappy riding Saturday.  Felt crappy when I woke up.  But hoped things would turn around, so I got dressed and rode to the race.  I felt weak and tired the whole way.

got to the race, picked up my number, decided not to start.  Rode home and got into bed for 2.5 hours.  Didn't help.

Another day.
Results here. https://my.raceresult.com/285791/

I started, and I guess I finished the Masters Race. But it all felt very symbolic, haha, it's been a challenging year to build any fitness, and it showed. I exploded at some point, and finished almost DFL. Not too concerned, but it'll be a while before I can actually race these races.

Was awesome to see the 4/5 ride well, and get a result! Congrats to Max.

JP, hope you feel better soon!

Coffee afterwards was a highlight as always.

@eloy looks like they got some good shots of you.

My Race Report:

I was focused on not eating wind, while Kevin and Dave were going to mark any attacks.  I tried to keep them in sight, or be on their wheel when I could, which I was able to do for most of the middle of the race.  At one point I got a bit jumpy coming over the hill into the finish where the split happened that Kevin mentioned, and I jumped where I probably shouldn't have to try and close.

Last lap after the downhill was trying to get into position on Kevin or Dave's wheel, but I was sort of boxed into the pack and could not move freely.  Dave kicked things off a bit before the hill, which strung the group out a bit, but I still just didn't have space to move.  Final hill was quite slow, and I really did not like my position and knew that if any space opened up I had to jump on it.  Sure enough, as we came over the top, two people launched and others started to follow and enough of a gap opened up that I could slide by.  The eventual winner was already gone (he put down 1500 W at this point) but I was able to hop onto 2nd wheel around GAP and then jumped from there and held position for 2nd.

I definitely got lucky with how space opened up as we crested the hill, because I really was not in an ideal spot.  I will give myself kudos for recognizing the opportunity and jumping on it.  Certainly a lesson in patience and how much can change quickly in these races

Thanks to everyone else in the race for the support during and after.
Awesome result Max!
@mugwump sorry about the cold; it's the time of year
@eloy you're just resting in anticipation of an epic Cyclocross build ;)

Who is racing what field? I'm defaulting to Masters but happy to race with any 4/5s in the short race.
I have yet to sign up, but planning to be in the 4/5 field.  Been in a bit of a training funk recently so not expecting much from myself performance wise, wouldn't change your race plan over it
BOOM

Race Report:

Didn't get to ride much the past 3 weeks, but woke up today feeling quite good.  Just dave and I today and the plan was for him to cover any attacks while I sat in.  Stayed in the front 3rd for the entire race, but did end up chasing one break attempt down more than I would have liked.  Other than that, stayed pretty sheltered for most of the race, often on Dave's wheel. Coming into the last lap, a group of 3 got a bit of distance on the peloton, but figured it would be pulled back from others.  Sat on Dave's wheel until around the zoo-ish when some space opened up and he nudged me to move over into it.

There was one big guy from lonely hearts who was pulling most of the last lap, and looked like he could be a sprint threat.  I tried to stay within a wheel of him coming up the hill, and as suspected he made a big jump coming through GAP and I popped onto his wheel, came out of his draft right as the downhill flattens out and was able to surge past and hold out for the W.

He had a 360 camera and was nice enough to clip this video of the final 30 seconds

Hell yea! Great job @MaxBucksbaum!
So sick!! Congrats!
April 13th Notes:
  • Automatic Lonely Hearts guy (John) went hard off the gun. I laughed thinking he just wanted to warm up but he kept dieseling all the way down the hill.
  • By temple one of the Star Track kids started surging hard so I surged with him and when he pulled off I asked if we had a gap and he laughed at me and said, "I like the enthusiasm." He may as well have said, "OK BOOMER."
  • Pretty chill pace today, kept it clean up front.
  • Lap 2 around bandshell I opened a spot for the wheel in front of me so Mr. Rapha Kit who was eating wind to my right could pop in. It wasn't a crucial position headed for the down hill so I didn't mind. He slide in then sort of half wheeled back out into the wind so I thought I'd squeeze back in. I must have caught him off guard and he gave me some choice words about learning how to race and how some people had things to do later in the afternoon (as opposed to crashing I guess). 🤷‍♂️
  • After the race he found me and apologized and I did the same and all is copacetic. 🙌
  • Max is communicating when he's on my wheel throughout the race. Communication is key!
  • Star Track kid goes off on a break at KOM on the 3rd lap. I'm inadvertently at the front so pull the field around GAP and push it for a minute before I ease up for someone else to pull through. No one really does so I go at it a bit more but yell to whoever is behind me they'd better get moving. The gap is about 5-10s and growing.
  • Mr Rapha Kit and another rider jump across and they yo-yo 5-10s ahead of us.
  • Automatic John hits the front and powers through all the way downhill and we finally catch them back at temple. He is built like a linebacker - 6'3 and quads the size of my waist.
  • We are back together and you can feel legs easing up on lap 4 and 5 winding up for the sprint.
  • I'm feeling good!
  • I bet on the left side heading to the hill. Max rides the train to the right. I've got a bit of room to maneuver early on but realize I'm behind the boat anchor crew as they can't go with the surge as we round GAP into the field sprint.
  • I'm boxed in at the joggers lane and can't unleash my massive sprint (LOL) but I see Max streaking up the right side, catching Automatic John's wheel.
  • As I roll it in for 17th, I see Max winning the damn race! Hell yes!!!
Podiums and coffee and croissants.

One more L&C race next Sunday before a month break in May for some good team riding, training and strategizing.

See you next race!

OH - we watched the finish of the 2/3 and one guy literally stopped right after he crossed the line in front of the judges table rode through the grass, grabbed his backpack and BOUNCED. No interruptions, no chat, just stone faced and done with the race I guess.

Video of him stopping right at the line.

Awesome max, well done!
Who’s in for 4/5 Saturday?
