CX Nationals in Hartford, CT -- 2016/17 and 2022!!

Harry, Jim F. and I rode the course today.

the muddy track is all gone and instead the ground is frozen solid, basically concrete, with the million imprints and ruts left behind from the wet first two days. 90% of the loop is hard but in the weirdest shapes and bumps ever. Crashes will hurt as if in the road. Tubulars are a must.

We battle and race tomorrow.
Congrats to our Masters out there racing today:

Hope all is OK with Jim F and D Strika with their DNS.

Sounds like quite a ride by Myerson in the 45-49. He put almost 3 minutes in Roger Aspolm.
there was mud, mad ice and all the frozen ruts forever. somehow survived, so still alive. afterwards we ate all the Hartford pizza. #cxnats

Jim F and Strika were very smart and decided to play it safe.

Who's braving the interstate highway to Hartford for spectating the elite races tomorrow? (And do you have room in your car?)
Nice job all who started. I decided to take a pass since I knew that, while I could get around the course, I wouldn't really be racing, just trying not to crash. After breaking 2 ribs in first lap crash in Asheville last year, and finishing 68th, I was sure I wasn't interested in repeating either performance.

I've raced cross for 23 years and ended two seasons with broken bones, last year and 07 with a fractured scapula when I hit a tree at USGP while in Top 10.

Don't know that any cross racer qualifies as being "rational" but for me, this year at least, discretion was the better part of value. When I got home, I had a fair bit of remorse over not toeing the line but you gotta go with your gut. Mine was telling me that a trip to the ER was a real possibility and that seemed an unacceptable risk for a mud-pack position.
That's valor not value and mid-pack not mud-pack above-sorry!

I left Brooklyn at 6:15 this morning, made a stop in CT to deliver a package to a family friend and made it to the course in time for the first lap of the elite juniors race.

Multiple layers, chemical toe warmers, and a few Sierra Nevada's kept me warm for a brilliant day of watching the nations best cx racers duke it out across the frozen ruts.

Met up with Eloy, Dan R, and Patrick and we wandered the course finding the best viewpoints. Eloy worked his camera magic. Dan tricked me into eating 3 1/2 pounds of tater tots. with cheese. and bacon.

Saw Dan S. Said hello to a host of other NYC/NJ/New England folks.

And was then treated to a nearly traffic free drive back to the city.

Ah.......
Harry you are an inspiration. You're basically an 1960's version of Jesse Anthony.

SHREDDDD!!!

Nationals notes.

The promoters offered up tent rentals.  Patrick or Eloy came up with the bright idea to rent one.  We did.  Awesome.  Icing on top was Patrick buying a propane heater and bringing it.  Turned out we were right next to the course.

Got there before 10, got dressed, rode to registration.  Crashed on a rut.  lost glasses.  (white glasses on white snow)

Watching the earlier races, it looked like no one could go full gas.  I figured out why later.

Crashed a few times warming up.  There didn't seem to be a good line anywhere but on the finishing straight.

For some reason, they gave out numbers by alphabetic order, not cross rankings.

Harry was in the pit with gear for Patrick, Eloy, me.

I lined up next to Mark McCormack, former national champ, in the 12th or  13th row--we were 101st and 102nd in the starting grid.  He was a pro, he is be a bike industry sales rep, but he doesn't have fancy equipment.  A several year-old Ridley painted grey with Clif Bar stickers.  Shimano 10-speed.  regular cross shoes with the vents taped over with duct tape.  Short sleeve summer jersey over a base layer, regular shorts over leg warmers.  He asked me how I handled starting at the back.

I knew I should follow him, but he took a line right along the fencing and I was afraid he was going to get jammed against a tree at the first curve.  he didn't.  (went on to finish 27th)

I avoided the crash on the first open section, and it helped me move up quite a bit.

But when I started running up the side hill, the quick-release buckle on my left shoe somehow opened up.  My foot just about came out.  I had to stop to tighten it down.  And that was pretty much the end of my race.

I passed several people after the descent, but the last person I passed I crashed after passing him, and that was it.

At the start of the second lap, I hit a rut I didn't see on the only open section of course.  not only crashing but losing my chain.  I crashed at least another two times, probably more.  My chain came off a second time.  The frozen muck made it impossible fore my rear wheel to spin at the end of the final lap.  I stopped and pulled it out.  My derailleurs were also jammed up.

There was one place on the course where there was goopy mud.  It was short, it caked your bike every time.  Most of the course was pretty frozen, with ruts on all the turns and deep ruts at the bottom of steep drops.

I agree with Eloy's contention that the side hill was ridiculous.  It looks like the promoters moved out the upper line so people can ride it.  And I'm guessing the lower line hardened up because it was nearly impossible to ride when we were there.

I've done cx nationals every time it was in the mid-atlantic and new england regions since 1991 (1991, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2006).  It snowed in '95, and '05.  In 1995, it was all loose powder and between not having a real cross bike (modified road bike with 28mm tires) and no toe spikes (weren't that common on mtb shoes at the time), it was impossible.  2005 was the bombogenesis event for the masters race, and packed snow for the elite men.  The ruts this year is what made the course stand out in terms of difficulty.  The ruts were brutal.

Before cleaning the bike (two of the three power washers were broken), Harry commented 'wow, it's 28 degrees out.  I thought it was colder.'  I thought "isn't it warmer?"

Once home, the second cleanup began.  bike, both sets of wheels, both pairs of shoes, two complete sets of riding clothing, most of my casual clothing worn at the race as well.
BTW,

Patrick 78th
Eloy 85th
JP 89th

Has JPow said anything about his abysmal performance yet?
he said exactly the only thing worth saying:

Saw that. I'm taking the protracted silence as indicative of his disappointment.

Team space is for competing cyclists only.

  • Team Space, 10×10, Includes 1 Wristband, $225

We rented the tent space and a tent with walls in 2016/2017 that proved to be a good a choice.

In 2017 we paid $365
In 2022 a similar setup would cost us $555 -- I think we should, but it would need to be divided between all of us.
But first, who is planning on racing nationals '22? It sounds like JP, James, myself... who else? Thierry? @Tom Feehan @Jim Feehan? anyone else!?

Let's go race bikes!
@eloy  FWIW, I'd think a 10x10 would probably be enough.  A 10x20 should be more than enough.
Yes. A 10x10 is what we rented in 2017, and that's what the prices above are for.

Maybe I"m mis-reading it, but a 10x10 seems to go for $225. and a 20x40 goes for $550.

Happy to split it either way.

To match what we had in 2017, we would need the 10x10 space AND the 10x10 tent with walls = $555

Tent team space 10x10: $225
Tent rental w walls 10x10: $330
Total: $555
Some folks pre-rode the course over the weekend (still not 100%)

Regardless of conditions, sure looks like a more challenging profile than what we did in 2017 -- as we'll go up and down the hill multiple times, and a full on sandpit (wip)

Worth note than even in 2017 the original course went up and down, turned, etc, on that hill, but they modified it a ton to match the hardcore 2017 conditions.

There's an official Ride with GPS here:

The multiple climbs up the hillside will spike the heart rate with little to no recovery time. Traction looks good under current conditions, but could become a shit show if it rains or snows
