Race Recap
Fun race, and pretty fast (26.6 MPH avg for 60k). Very nice morning, and a big turnout unsurprisingly. I didn't have time to do a lap before the race, so just went in kind of blind. The course definitely can be a bit sketchy not knowing where certain turns are ahead of time, especially that construction on the north end before Harlem Hill.
I was riding solo, didn't have much of a plan besides trying to stick around a few folks I know in the field who are strong riders. Kind of just sat in the first few laps trying to get a feel for the course and make some mental notes. A break of 3 got a gap around the third lap, and there wasn't much organization from anyone to close it down, even though quite a few teams had decent numbers. Two of the riders ended up getting dropped and coming back, but the last guy rode solo and won with a 40-50 second lead. Apparently he has done the same in past CP races.
I felt solid through most of the race, on the last lap I was in good position and thought I had taken enough mental notes throughout to know where I was, but I got a bit confused and moved up too early and burned my last matches. Coming up Cat's Paw at the end I was totally gassed and dropped from 5th wheel to like 30th across the line. Oh well.
Glad I got out to CP, but I prefer racing in Prospect. Besides the construction, there are some areas of not great pavement, I almost got taken out by a loose gravel patch. The new pavement is super nice, but still unmarked and the cones they used to delineate the jogger lane were not great. As the race went on the park got busier with riders/joggers and it made for some less than ideal moments.
