2011 Racing

Hey John do you know where sign ins will be? I'm curious because I'm going to ride over and I want to find the shortest way to the registration table.
According to the flyer:

"The Start/Finish Line for Palisades Timetrial
Registration is in the Englewood Boat Basin Parking lot. The course runs from above the
Englewood Boat Basin to the Alpine round about and the finish line is at the Englewood
start line. Please lock your car before you leave your car."

I'm really glad they reminded me to lock my car door...
John,
Caffeine is most effective if you limit your daily intake. I recommend detoxing or reducing caffeine use before supplementing with it. Caffeine pills are pretty cheap; a box of 200mg pills is usually the price of a mid-priced coffee at Starbucks.
@AndrewA: Thanks, I will be sure to lock my car door.
Hoping to do saturday. Weather's meant to be a bit crappy though so will probably hold off deciding until Friday night. The FBF races by Kissena are not usually full, right? Sign on the line should be OK?
Lock my car....
I have no car! What advice do they offer about bicycle security?
Adam, You're Correct about signing up on the day FBF! Re vehicular security: I suggest you carry a kryptonite NY lock with you during the TT.

McKay, does that offer of clip-on bars still stand? I could come by, meet up, whatever works. Pssst me back or

P.S. Did anyone see the bike "Triple Thrush" NY bike doco series on Travel Channel tonight? It's one part watchable and one part waking bikemare... "The law says I have to stop for a Red light, but I say...". Weird how that makes me cringe! I guess it was all shot last summer, pre-crackdown. A mate of mine worked on an Alley Cat film a few years back "Red Light Go". Covers the Mike Dee posse and that crazy guy who was in prison—worth a watch. These new guys come across so clean cut—where will I get my PCP from?
Do we have to pre-reg in order to do the TT, or can we show up and pay on Sunday?? Flyer indicates start times will be posted on the website tomorrow..
Andrew, It is pre-reg for TT—Cut off is 9pm tonight.
I'm in for FBF tomorrow, will skip the TT.

See you tomorrow troops-
Dudes,
Adam and I are entering this Sunday's SS out and back 8.68 mile time trial. We're assuming it starts early as there's few entries. Plan to head over to the GWB for Kissena 9am bunch ride after.

Thoughts are there's little advantage with a TT bike because the course is rolling with lots of turns.

By the way, there is a race on 4/23 in PP, how do we sign up online with a Kissena club discount?

Since these races typically sell out, especially at the Cat 4 & 5 level - you should pre-reg online at full price. Charlie will give you a little envelope with cash to make up the kissena discount. I will ask him at FBF tomorrow to confirm and post on a separate thread.
KCK this morning:
Andy and I 1-2 in Cat 5. Awesome ride by Andy—4 lap solo in strong wind.

David Stearns had a fall and is pretty banged up, might have collar-boned it. Total bummer. Hope you heal up quickly!
I wasn't there today, but I am so stoked for Andy's win! Stoked for you too John, comin' in second! Awesome job, guys.

Sorry to hear that another Kissena might be joining me in the cracked collarbone crew, though. Hopefully it's not the case but regardless - HEAL QUICKLY (and feel better).
Hey TT-ers...

On a rolling course, it can be tempting to ease up on the downhills because you are already going "so fast," but really, you need to keep that power output up on the downward dips too. I'm guessing speeds are going to be more similar on the uphills, but on the downhills, if you push your 300 watts or whatever you are shooting for, you are going to have flying fast time.
Thanks Marc. Power-on downhill gives you momentum for next rise too.

Planning to ride a bit higher cadence than usual, I find it helps to smooth the changes in elevation.
What's Cancellara's cadence here? 100-110?

Interesting position analysis here... hip angle crucial to developing max power, flat back crucial to max speed:

One question: Taping over helmet vents in absence of TT helmet, legal or just kind of stupid?

7:49AM start :^( Anyone riding up from BK ping me back.

Thanks heaps for the bars Dan.
hey guys, any reports from today's TT?
All,
Figuring power for a TT is a bit trickier than starting, hitting your power number, and holding it. There is a fair amount of evidence that backing off a little bit on downhills and gassing up a bit on the uphills, is faster than keeping steady. The reason is that a few extra watts on a fast section yields very little extra speed, while those same few extra watts on the slow section, yields quite a bit extra speed. So, for this uphill finish, a small-ring uphill at that, backing off a little bit going into the last downhill section leading into the hill then attacking the hill with higher power was probably the smart pacing strategy.

The other big problem is that almost everybody overdoes their first minute of a time trial. In longer TT's, you can get your speed back, but in short TTs, like the one today, you'll probably never get it back. This morning, I rode the course with the winner of the day, Gavi Epstein. We were debating whether or not to start in the big ring. He was leaning toward it, I was leaning toward the 52x23. When I got to the line, I reconsidered, and went with the 38x23. My first 30 seconds, were my hardest 30 of the race, and that was probably a mistake, but I did take at least a minute before I shifted into the big ring. Gavi might have even been in his small ring longer. Gavi was the only person to break 8 minutes.

I was 5th in the Pro/Am. I missed 4th by 2.02 seconds. 6th was over 30 seconds behind me. AAAaaarrrgh!

This puts me in 8th place overall in the spring series going into the last race.

BTW, taping over the vents in a regular helmet can make a difference. But it's a big hassle to get on, to get off, and probably yields almost nothing for a short effort like today's. You would have been better off using that time to sleep.

And the shorter the effort, the more sense higher cadence makes. And yes it helps smooth out the transition from a short dip to a short rise.
I should add that I did back off a bit more than I should have on the first part of the downhill section, though I blame it on three cyclists who were swerving around puddles ahead of me. It was an open course and these people where just poking through. Dealing with those three probably cost me more than those two seconds, but others probably had similar issues.
Thanks for the insightful breakdown of the TT today JP. I had a hard time of it—should have given myself more time to ride up there. I think I rode 9:08, waaay off the pace.

Spent a fair amount of time on the course avoiding or alerting people to my presence. Gasping for air on the hill!

Lessons:
- Pre-ride the course.
- Practice aerobars.

Re the taping the helmet thing, from a UCI standpoint. 1.3.031 part 3, last bit:
[Each rider shall be responsible for] using only a helmet that has not been altered or had any element added or removed in terms of design or form. Not that I'd expect there'd be a deal... just say'n, technically you'd be prostestable.
But you're not in a UCI race and probably don't have a UCI license. Their rules don't apply. If you find it in USA cycling rules, that's different.
Spring Series TT not part of Pro Tour! Nooooooo.

Charlie's race & looks like fun. Anyone want to do the 4s?
1-2-3's here
Eric
I'm in for the 4s.
reg'd for 4s.
This is a deceptively difficult race and usually lots of fun. It's usually windy and despite the two obstacles (the rise at the bottom, the 180-degree turn at the top) being barely a problem, it's an attackers course.

You can take the LIRR to within about two miles of the course. If you want a longer ride, it's about 22 miles from the end of the E, J, and Z lines in Jamaica. I'm sure it can be done from the end of the A in the Rockaways as well.
I've been going to cedar creek park for some sprint training and boy does it get windy. Not nearly as bad as FBF, but it can get close. The advantage over FBF is the roads are paved smooth!

I am definitely in!
