COVID 19

Honestly, I miss my office. I need the work life separation. I might start going in, and I'm pretty sure I'd be the only one. The only thing is the bathrooms are shared by the other suites on the floor. 😷
Agreed, I worked from home 3 days out of the week for years AND with a mostly distributed team. It was not my cup of tea and I ended up working way way more and burning out quickly. After I left that job, I was really glad to be back in an office and working with people directly IRL. A lot more nuance can be shared with a lot less effort using something as simple as a big whiteboard in a conference room.
I just got out of a meeting with my school's administrative staff and was told that the DOE has narrowed it down to three options for next year-

1. Continued remote instruction
2. Face to face teaching
3. A combination of the two

In other words, they have no idea lol.

Pretty much the same here too. Nobody knows. I'm bracing for another term of homeschool.

That sounds like a safe bet. My partner is an office manager and is trying to work out how to set up their communal work space so that people can maintain distance. I can imagine trying to do that with 30 9th graders.
Re-opening is tricky.

Obviously, smaller classes are complicated because of the extra teacher and space it necessitates.  the start of the school day, the end of day, moving kids through the buildings, recess, lunch might have to be reimagined.

If there's any change to class size, class time, any reliance on remote learning, new curriculums with new goals and expectations will have to be designed.

My son has an engineering teacher who is immunocompromised and doesn't see going back in the fall.  But he wants to teach, so he asked to work with my son over the summer on a project so the teacher can prepare for remote schooling.

A friend is a PE teacher.  He has a hard time seeing any traditional school type team sport coming back in the fall and believes a new curriculum will have to be devised.

Unless Covid magically disappears, I expect this is going to be a tough summer for teachers and administrators trying to figure out how to teach come fall.

I'm getting peeved at NYCC and CRCA not wearing cover in CP. It's lame, but even lamer when you ride in TBD team kit two abreast in crowded CP, 8:20am Wednesday morning. No one expects a mask all the time, but 20 people in close proximity? It's just not a good look, and it gets all of us cast as a bunch of selfish fuckwits. Which is a bit too close to the bone!

Somebody here asked if I had “anxiety problems” because I don't want to rode in a group.

WHO now recommends NOT wearing a mask while exercising because it can reduce breathing quality. They maintain that the best preventative measure is social distancing and that you should avoid contact by staying at least 1m apart (so group riders are not in the clear). That said, I think a lot of wearing a mask is public perception (EDIT: while on bike, wear a mask everywhere else obv). If you're seen with a mask, I think people understand that you acknowledge the pandemic and take it seriously. So keeping a covering on hand at the very least is probably a good idea.

I think we're a long way from "old school" group rides - either in perceived or actual risk.
This story has gotten very little play.  A teammate of gravel god Colin Strickland is also a medical researcher and is working on Covid-19.  She is pessimistic about racing returning in 2019.

agree, if you are out and about on your bike, have a mask or covering with you. Be ready to put (or pull) it on, when things get crowded.

The thing that frustrates me about some posts from WHO or CDC is that they seem to be for everyone but New York. We were the center and most affected place by the pandemic, avoiding crowds is difficult at times, so simply, wear a mask if others are around. It protects you and them.

Totally, NYC precautions won't be the same as Missoula, Montana precautions.

Unfortunately this message seems to have not reached many in NYC, judging by the groups on 9W over recent weekends...I also see a number of NY teams posting up on social media on team rides....
Yeah, i even saw some restaurants with outdoor seating in Coney Island.
I liked this podcast from the NYT Daily on the effects of reopening:

Yeah that's sort of what I meant by real risk vs perceived. I think it is going to be another year before the two come together in something like an appropriate equilibrium. For the foreseeable future I expect a lot of ahem, "spread" between the two :/
I'm interested to see if there's a Covid spike after these protests.
But then, are the protests closer to group riding without a mask or is sitting in a crowded church or Trump rally closer to group riding without a mask?

Still, it's highly infectious and the case fatality rate of over 5% is daunting.
A lot of talk today about group rides etc. Got me thinking about a film I watched last night, Starship Troopers.

An adaption of the Heinlein book of the same name, it has provoked debate regarding whether it is or isn't a critique of militarism, fascism, the industrial-military complex etc.

However there was one aspect which made me think on regarding what being a citizen (in my case a temporary alien resident) in the US means. Do rights or responsibilities come first?

For me COVID-19 and group rides provides a something to think about here. I am allowed by the letter of the guidance given to undertake group rides, but does that conflict with my responsibility as a citizen to society in general? I feel that it does, and that I should prioritize my responsibilities to reduce my potential impact on society during COVID-19. This means I will need to avoid exercising my rights to group ride.

Anyway, a long and rather obscure way around saying that even though I believe you may have the right to do something, you should consider your responsibilities to those you know, don't know and are yet to know before doing so. Reducing the risk of transmission benefits us all as it reduces the impact and duration of the disaster.
^ I like the scifi tie-in and lord knows I love me some Verhoven... I’m also likely the only KCC nerdy enough to have l read everything RAH has ever published...

I don’t thing there is any serious question about SST though - it is a parody.

The idea behind “Troopers,” according to Verhoeven, was to create a story that “seduced the audience” on one level, but then make it clear to the audience what they were admiring was actually evil.

This seems to pick up where the group ride discussion left off. #obvs he has skin in the game to get bike racing back, but I'm not reading anything that makes me want to throw a shoe

I've been doubting myself lately.  Maybe I'm too concerned about easy spread.  Maybe the guys I see hammering as a group or riding in a tight pack are right...

The interview with Roshon largely allayed my doubts.

While I don't expect USAC to be so proactive, running a bi-weekly report from this doc would be smart.  And if they don't, some publication should.
Sold an old piece of furniture today to a lady wearing a mask that said "Faith not Fear" and I now have so many questions...
Faith in science, fear of whatever the opposite is of science?
@JohnMalcolmson

You were wondering about group rides.

I spoke with John Loehner today.  He of Weather Channel fame and an internist.  Turns out, he has been living in the same building as my parents since August.  I was seeing them.  He was sunning himself on their roof as we had a socially-distanced lunch.

He says he's done precisely two group rides since March.  one a few weeks ago, one yesterday.  He limited the ride to five people, and said he had strict protocols.  He said the other  guys were riding solo as well.  Sadly, he didn't share the details of what those protocols were.  It should be noted, the ride was in Easton, PA, so at least he had to drive to get there.

I should have pressed.

I guess if ten people all had antibodies and they were more than two weeks passed since the test occurred, it might be possible to ride together, though I don't think there's an FDA-approved test yet, and even good ones are only claiming 90% accuracy.  Would seem that those odds would suggest one's test was wrong.
It is remotely possible all 10 have recovered from covid, but I think Ockham's Razor is more likely. They just think riding as a cool-looking group is more important, so they do it.

Hi everyone,

I think this could also go in the Racing thread, but it looks like there is racing happening in PA in July and August. https://www.bikereg.com/47588 They have some precautions for limiting interaction, but there is not much you can do during the races I guess.
My brother, who lives in Philly is planning on doing the one this weekend. It seems like they have been having small group rides for a month or so now and are generally more casual. I was thinking i would wait to hear back on how this weekend goes and maybe go down for one of the races later in the month. What do you guys think? Too early?
^^^ Thanks JP. A more "scientific" way to determine if you are no longer contagious: have two nasal-throat tests or saliva tests 24 hours apart that are both negative for the virus. https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/if-youve-been-exposed-to-the-coronavirus

I tend to think so.

Here's what the Austin Driveway series is doing.  But considering the spike in Texas, the racing might not be going on anymore.  And it would be good for someone to follow up in about a week to see if anyone has reported getting Covid from the race

I feel for the organizers but frankly this seems like a case of race organizers putting other people at risk in order to protect their businesses.
