Long Island Time Trial

For anyone with a car and feels like traveling out to Long Island. A friend has setup a ITT event, mostly for fun and on the honer system. He has put together a Facebook group which I have invited those whom I have listed as friends to. Results would be sent to him and he will work on a leaderboard. He might do different categories based on equipment, aka those in full TT gear vs those who do not have that option. It's mostly for fun and to get by during this time. The April TT is located on the old NYS TT championships course. Here is a description of the April events:

Course #1: Calverton, April 2020
Location: Intersection of Grumman Blvd and Line Rd
Approximate start line: The speed limit sign just past the intersection of Grumman Blvd and Line Rd
Course map available on Garmin Connect

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/31371029

Length: 1 lap, 10km
April Weekends (4,5,11,12,18,19,25,26)
Race #1 7-9am
Race #2 9-11am
Race #3 11am-1pm
Race #4 1-3pm
Race #4 3-5pm
Race #5 5-7pm

This is one of my favorite courses. Good pavement, slight winds, excellent sight lines, and safe intersections. There's a big ring hill shortly after the start, but the rest of the course is flat.
I figure we could start this series with 1 lap efforts, then maybe progress to 2 lap efforts in May. Also, most folks could do more than one effort during a training session, so if you have to drive out there you can make the most of your day.
Starting Point: There's a speed limit sign just east of Line Rd on Grumman Blvd that serves as a starting point. The course runs clockwise, and there are 4 right hand turns.

Right Turn 1: just past the golf course, onto River Rd
Right Turn 2: onto Wading River Manor Rd (you'll know you're going hard enough if you never notice the large bull statue on your right)
Right Turn 3: bear right to continue onto Wading River Manor Rd
Right Turn 4: swing right back onto Grumman Blvd, the finishing straight.
Finish Line: keep going until the double yellow line ends at Line Rd

There are places to park along Line Rd should you need to drive out to the course. Remember though to keep your distance from others!
You can make shorter loops by cutting through the course along Line Rd.

I know all those are words in the English language but it doesn't compute. There is no way "Fun" can be used to describe a "Time Trial"

Haha... well maybe some of us have a twisted sense of the idea of fun?  =)

Now that I can come out of quarantine, I signed up for the LI Social Distancing Time Trial for Sunday at 11:00am. First iTT since what 2011? Not that I've ever been a time trialist. I guess this is a good summer to learn. Maybe by the end I'll be in the market for a TT bike...  =)
Where do we sign up. I'm on LI for the time being and would go

Are you on FB?
Sadly, no can I use my girlfriends in lieu of me
There is a FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/257650168575955/

@RobertPeras and I hit the course this morning. We did a warmup lap side by side while maintaining our space, so he could learn the course, and for me to refresh my memory on it.

I set off first spaced by about 5 minutes. Having not done a TT in a very long time, I think I went out too hard, but there was the small rise in the road. The first turn put me into the headwind which did not abate until after turn 2. After turn three a definite tail wind.

One foot down start from a stop. Aero road frame bike aka Giant Propel, with carbon, I think 50 deep, rims. Semi aero helmet with integrated visor, wind shoe covers, aero gloves and skin suit.

40mph sign to end of double yellow line: 16:01.56 distance 10.25Km. Actual 10Km: 15:40.25. Garmin Edge 810. Will have video up later.

Very nice! Grab yourself some of that free garmin software and you can superimpose your data on the video :)
With a IF that is near 1.0, I think it's time for a new FTP test Andrew.

I'm working on it as we speak.. lol.. My Garmin Virb Camera has it's own Ant+ receiver and GPS, So easy to synch up, though I won't call that the official data. The Garmin Virb Edit leaves a bit to be desired. I can't lower the video sound and then add soundtrack. So after export, I have to re-edit in Final Cut Pro X.
^yup you sound like you’re definitely all over it!

I just wish my computer wasn't 10 years old.. Lol.. Although with 8 cores and 8 virtual cores, it's not horrible but not the fastest either...

I did a test back in early January to get a baseline. Then I rode 1500 miles from Jan to end of Feb, and did interval training too... So yeah I should probably test again, or, maybe extrapolate from these TTs...
IF of 1.0 is ideal for a TT effort, but its not an indication of needing to Field Test - its just normP/averageP
It's just weird for me. Going from two years of Track racing to TT. On the track the only similar effort would have been the Kilo. But that's 1m19s of pure agony. So now, due to circumstances, need to adapt to TT type efforts... lol..
Fun times today. I would love to report on how well I did, but I made a wrong freekin turn around 4 miles in. So my results are off. I ended up turning around and getting back on course and ended up finishing at 17:20. I think if I didn't make that dumb mistake I would have been about 20 seconds behind Flash (aka Andrew). On the bright side of things, I averaged 300 watts (about 3.5 watts/kg) which I was pretty happy with.

Congratulations @PatrickGrehan for leading the Strava Segment of the Long Island Social Distancing Time Trial. Paul is actually keeping separate score sheets for TT bikes and Road bikes. But Strava doesn't make any distinction so credit to Patrick. I posted a much improved time today despite the 18mph wind with 24mph gusts from WNW. I will have a writeup hopefully by tomorrow. My video is exporting as I type this and it might be a while before it's available on YouTube.

Yay, video is up:

14:25 for the loop and 14:14 for the Strava segment.

Went into this with two hard days of work in my legs. Told myself just try to beat Patrick's time. I was in the least aero set up, burning watts with a nonaero jersey and shorts, regular climbing helmet, no gloves and shoe covers. Hung on the drops and powered through a windy section until I started north bound and really tried to crank home.

Pretty solid tt for myself considering I'm definitely more climber style
Here is my writeup!

Single speed fixe for tomorrow's TT. Yes I'll remove the bottle cage before I set off.. lol..

Brake Levers?
Brake Levers?
She's a road going bike. My track bike does not have the drilled out holes in the fork to mount brakes, she's a pure track bike. Too dangerous for the road.
Badass! Be sure to put some tape over those valve holes ;)
Also that thing is begging for some proper tt bars...

Looks like I'll be making my run tomorrow. Too wet today. So Fixie TT + long ride in the afternoon.

Yeah I will cover up the valve holes once I'm onsite and I have adjusted the pressure. No sense in doing that sooner, at this point all I have is Gaffer's tape. That should work.

I haven't ridden TT bars in 20 years I think. I would definitely need to get used to them, and possibly another post and saddle since it will probably change my saddle position, and I'd rather just drop on a Saddle/post preconfigured and bullhorn/tt bars on, or something like that...
