I've even been known to chop a teammate at Grants (sorry Mattie)

Hey Foundation guy...you are CHOPPED !!

And that was when he was riding his Ti Noodle, this year he's got the Aboveground Pool Blue Spooky razor, that'll chop you so clean you'll swear you just got cut with a space laser.
Space laser!
This year...you get...wait for it...SLAP CHOPPED !!!!

I realize that there's a lot of silliness going on with the chopper portion of this thread...however, this does remind me that we should have a discussion as a group, as to how we are going to race together/against each other this season. Specifically I'm talking about our mutant cat 4s who have the "great power" thing but maybe need to brush up on the "Great responsibility" part of this superhero analogy. it seems every year there's at least one or two, "What the fuck do you think you were doing out there when you did that thing out there that totally just ruined my entire road season" interclub blow-outs after and even during the racing. We can help lessen the likelyhood of this happening this year but more clear communication.
(Whistles aimlessly)
I'm all in on these discussions Marc...but everybody has a plan...until their power meter hits 1000 watts.

I believe that if you don't have the endurance to get in a break, then you should block.  If you don't have the power to win a sprint, then you should lead out.  Anybody can do the privateer thing but there is strength in numbers and it is shame when the numbers are wasted by a team of privateers.  I will have no problem blocking or leading out for you men this season. (and I call you men, even though you all know what you really are)  yack-fu

That pretty much sums it up.  We should put that on a sticker on everyone's top tube!  In the 4's we should pretty much know who are best 3 guys are for the sprint ort the break or the chase are.  Just because "all battles are fought at night, in the rain at the intersection of 4 maps" doesn't mean we shouldn't have a plan and try and improvise around it's basics.

This sounds good, and I'm all for reviewing tactics, and look forward to the discussion at RB coming up.  But if we want to race as a team, we need to practice as a team.  When's the cat 4 practice?
bruce et al,
In the past, we've done a day at the Kissena Velodrome on road bikes, usually in early march, usually a week before Grant's Tomb, to work on a number of these things (pacelining, bridging, leading out).  I'll try to find the thread and bump it up.

And please respond to the tactics talk thread so we know you're going.
... in spite of the best laid plans...
i think i cracked a rib skiing on sunday, so i am on the fence about GT.  i think these things take a long time to heal?
Just one?
Not sure actually. Limited recall of the event suggests I went down onto the ski pole handle , just under the left pec. No crepitus, but other signs, including sharp pain on breathing/sneezing/coughing etc., and bad sleeping. Actually feels more like 2 or 3 are at least bruised, but I imagine a hairline fracture in one. Haven’t gone for an xray tho.
McKay,
For the little it's worth, I was racing in four weeks after breaking four ribs, though I wasn't mixing with the sprints.  For me, riding was possible after a few days.  Sprinting was impossible the first week, and really hard to do after two weeks.  The bigger worry is crashing while healing.

I may or may not have broken a rib in a crash in 2007.  Never got it checked out because I assumed it was a bruise.  But racing two days later was brutal, In a week, it really hurt, but I still managed to race decently.  By then, I figured what happened didn't matter, as whatever it was seemed to be healing.

All,
I'm registered for the Pro/1/2.  Anyone joining me?
JP, That seems reasonable, but impressive nonetheless.   I have been able to ride on the trainer, and the power is coming back, but am worried about crashing in a race.  hoping to get on the road at least this weekend and see how it feels.

As an aside, a cautionary tale... after intense abdominal impact events, do not take too much ibuprofen,  accompanied by whiskey, as it can lead to gastritis , which leads to not being able to have any more of the ibuprofen or whiskey...  which you can really miss if you have had an intense impact injury, and your ribs really hurt ... :(

Yikes...yeah, whiskey and ibuprofen...bad combo. Ibuprofen should be taken with meals, because it's extremely harsh on the stomach.

And whiskey should be taken with some sweet vermouth and some bitters, because it is extremely delicious that way. Stay off the Vitamin I & Whiskey cocktails, that is for advanced drinkers with stomachs of iron.
If we are talking whiskey...then allow myself to introduce myself...Redbreast 12 year old Irish Whiskey is the cats pajamas...that is all.  It is the EPO of Irish Whiskey's....yup I went there.

Thinking ahead to Grant's Tomb, both for those who are racing, and those who aren't.
Bring warm clothes and do some serious spectating.

It doesn't matter if you think you're never going to ride a criterium or if you think you want to get a job riding criteriums.  If you're riding a bicycle, it's a very good idea to learn how to go around corners safely and confidently in a hurry.  If you're racing, it's an essential skill.  There are several corners at GT and each one is a little different, calling on slightly different thinking each time.

And Marc will be hanging out giving play-by-play.  Take advantage of this.
With heavy heart I need to announced I've cancelled my Cat 4 registration for Grant's Tomb.  I was really looking forward to the race, and went to Branchbrook to shake out the winter cobwebs, but my crash is going to keep me off the bike for a couple of weeks, I think.  I do plan on attending, though, for general cheering and crowd whipping-up, and to support the team.  Go KCC!
I'm not doing Branchbrook so I'll be there to cheer & sell bottles for the thirsty.

Squad:

This is lame of me, but I can't be there on Saturday to hold jackets/distribute orange slices.  I need to be out of the city that day.

Rock it for me . . . I will be rooting for you!

Cross-posted from Group Ride thread:

My plan at this juncture is to be present to cheer on my dudes Saturday - 5's, I'll try to make it in time for your race but no promises.  I'll be available to hold jackets / leg warmers / security blankets at the start for any racers.

All of this is contingent on schoolwork, but I'll do my best.
I'm out for 5's. Hopefully Floris will get moved in off the wait list. It looked like it was between him and another guy as to who would come in off the wait list.
my knee has shit the bed.  I am off the bike for a month.  I envy all your healthy patella tendons.  Have fun and keep the rubber side down.
yacks
I have been dealing with a nasty cold all week. At this point I haven't touched the bike in 8 days, I dont want take any risks getting worse by racing Grants, so I am out. I contacted the promoter trying to get another KCC in with my entry but he told me it was not possible.

I am the last person on the wait list for the cat-5.  Since this is the first race I have registered for, how will I know if I get in?  Any ideas?

Damn, we're falling apart, here!  I just re-iced my knee sitting here at work, and slathered more moisturizer on my face to help prevent scarring.  But look at this, it's only March 6.  Let's get it out of the way now, get healthy, get training, get strong, get that KCC train back in motion.  April, May, June, we've got time.  Get healthy, everyone, and for those still riding, keep it strong, we'll join you in a bit.
@Chris
You'll probably just get an emai letting you know you're inl. You look to be third in line off the wait list based on the day you registered.
here's the bikereg page that lists the entrants
