FBF Tuesday 2011

Starts next Tuesday, May 3rd. No need to pre-reg (not on bikereg)

Who's racing? Who's interested in what? I know Mattie mentioned he'd want the sprint jersey. Anyone looking to give it a stab at the overall? I'm upgrading to a 3 after Housatonic Hills so I'll be forced to compete in the Pro 1/2/3 (yikes!) But I'm willing to work for whoever in May.

I bet Charlie will post some more info on it, here's the race flyer/ website though:

I am looking to do this series, starting next week. see you out there.
i think realistically, going down every week to try and defend a jersey isn't going to be in the cards for me. the trip is just a bit much, and i'm really focusing on getting my track upgrade. i will try and make a couple, and maybe try and mix it up in a sprint or 2, or lead out if we can get an overall contender, but i don't expect any one to ride for me.
i would like to race tomorrow. i am wondering, can you,or do you need to pre-register? i didnt see it on bikereg. also, in the cases of lots of rain, i tend to want to go anyway, as i dont mind riding when wet, but if it is cancelled outright, how can i find out and save a trip out for nought?
don't preregister for floyd

the fields never fill up
McKay, the series is not on bikereg

Last year Nyvelocity had a "fbf status page", where Charlie notified us if the race was cancelled due to a washout. Not sure if its going to be the same this year. You usually know an hour or two before
Who's going out tonight.? I'm thinking about going but not motivated to ride out by myself.
sorry guys, i'd like to get out to FBF on weeknights but work is always intruding and stuff. good luck out there!
Report!
Windy as usual.
First! to McKay in Cat 5—finally success! Gutsy Da Silva looked like he had it locked up in a solo but caught a flat.

Wojciech 2nd place in 3/4's, won sprint 2/2 but no jersey.

Not sure about P123.

Huuuuge thanks to Stéphane for spotting me his wheel and then nearly freezing to death waiting for race to finish.

P.S. Plata I haven't forgotten I owe you $20!
wowza!

sounds like a good night!

congrats, dudes

i wish i was out there - instead, sitting at home writing this damn paper!
woo! I love Fbf so much. I think someone should start a Sunday night series (:

We had a nice field today, roughly 40? riders. Kissena was nicely represented with 4 or 5 guys. I was hoping the pace would be high from the start (and felt fine contributing to it) so that we would loose as many people as possible. Half the field was gone by sprint time so that worked out.

Dan tried getting sprint # 1 by going with a group of 5 guys who got caught close to the line, I believe he got 5th. The field was strung out a lot through out the race (at least that's the way I saw it from the front) Breaks were small in the beginning, Jan & myself chased down most of them. Half a lap to go to sprint #2 I move up to the front a bit and see John solo on the left side of the road. Thinking he was looking to break I got up to him and we WENT. By went I mean I had trouble holding his wheel. It turns out he wanted to get me to the sprint, which I didn't even notice was in that lap. I got the sprint and John got 2nd? We got a nice gap on the field. It seemed like at the first sprint everyone went crazy to get it and at the second the field just let two teammates go.

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) it was at this point that the field really split up, with about 13 guys up front and a long trail of riders behind it. One guy kept yelling that this is it, it wasn't. With about 3 to go I somehow made it in a group that including Chris (axis), another strong rider (who won) and myself. The details of how I got there are blurry, but Chris flatted with two to go. Me and the other rider rode nicely together, taking quick short pulls. On the bell lap on the section before the finish line I was giving him all the protection from the wind (since I'm such a nice guy and all...). Then instead of taking the last corner sharply I did a nice, slow, 5boro-type corner and let him get a really good gap on me. He won & I got second. I'm happy though; no jersey= no target.

John, I think you should go for the Sprinters Jersey. I'm not going to be around for the whole series and it would be great to have a teammate in the Jersey. You could have easily solo-ed it to the finish line with that kind of a attack.

When I got my prize money everyone was gone, so if you're at Floyd Thursday or next Tuesday remind me and I'll give you a share.
btw: I asked for a "lucky" number at registration and got 306. Didn't think much of it until I got home and realized I was #306 at the first Thursday FBF series in April where I got second as well.

Coincidence? I don't think so!
Woohoo, nice job guys! Congrats to McKay and Wojciech for placing in the money & to John & Dan for the teamwork.
Floyd HURT yesterday. Lots and lots of wind. Not the normal ouch FBF is going to be windy, more like Alan's finish-line camera setup blew down and almost took out his monitor. The tent judges' tent was moving about 2feet every hour even with 100lbs of sandbags on it. On the backside, into the headwind, we were doing 300watts to go barely 18mph.

I intiated a break into that headwind on the sprint lap with a NYVelocity and BH/Garneau riders and we were alternating pulls just trying to hold it to the line, and I kind of hoped we would be able to take it further. I didn't realize there was one other rider holding onto the back. Just as the NYVelocity rider was winding up his sprint and I was going to hang onto his wheel Sam Frias blows past us wide to the outside and it is on. I do my best to hold onto the wheel and get 3rd but the rider who was hanging on passed me to take 3rd. Out of the money/points. So disappointing.

My lungs were burning after that and I couldn't get anybody to organize any sort of counter and establish a break. I ended up holding on for two more laps and I end up getting pooped out of the back of the race.
Big Congratulations to Wojciech and McKay.

mckay's about to break into the chorus of "i got you"
Good racing guys... congrats!
Way to go, McKay – Congratulations!
Hey, thanks for all the support gang! i find the pictures kind of disturbing actually... i sort of thought i had much more of a lead on the next guy...
Hey, just making sure of start times: 3-4 starts at 7pm? I want to make sure that I'll have time to reg, pin my number, etc. Not so worried about a warm-up, since I'll be riding from uptown.
3/4 race starts at 7:02:

Report 5/10
Cat 5: McKay 2nd?
Cat 3/4: I placed highest at 10th. Lighter winds (!?) set it up for a bunch sprint. Brauer had a solid lead out train in last 500. Hear that guys? A lead out train. Crazy!
I tried to wrestle the sprint jersey away from Sam Frias (who has a United guy leading him out). Sprint 1: I saw that the jerseys and Misha were both boxed and attacked on the left side just before you exit the scrub at the top of the course. Proving to be an effective tactic in the side wind there. Frias took second. United guy/Frias, wanted me to break away with them!? Sprint 2: Frias got a huge leadout from his domestique to hunt down an early attacker; I closed the gap a little to grab 3rd. Boy he can accelerate.
Thanks to Jan and Plata for getting out there and covering dangerous moves, I think Jan was up the road more than he was in the bunch. Congrats to Andrew Da Silva on his first Cat 4 race.
Cat 123: ?
This frias guy = biggest douchebag I've ever met.

Really cocky, really us-safe (or "skilled" if you want) as far as riding goes. He must have cut off atleast 5 guys that I could see and even managed to get two guys to tell him "next time you do that I'm punching you in the face". With two to go he takes the corner before the finish line 2 feet into the grass.

After what Charlie said prior to the race I though it would atleast make him (and a few other riders) re-think their actions but nooo.

I believe he's new to brauer so if you're racing and see him try to stay away

As far as the race goes it was preety fast but felt average, I got just over 26 as our average speed.

Breaks didn't really stick, in the beginning I made an attempt to go several times/ tried bridging up to guys but we were in a "break" for less than 1/2 a lap most of the time. Me and lance gave it a try towards the end but one guy who I think wanted to break with us actually dragged the whole group up.

Large field, teams were really working together especially (and I hate to say it) brauer. Teany also did a solid job

Thursday we currently have Mike in first so if you can come out and help him stay there.
1,2,3's - just rene and me

i'm not sure if this was a slow race or what, but i've never felt as capable in my life in a 1,2,3 tuesday night floyd affair. by which i mean to say, this was NOT like being beaten up in the men's room, as per usual. i still have trouble with the sharp accelerations, but i bridged/brought back 4 or 5 breaks with relative ease. good signs.

unfortunately, a break went with 2 to go and i wasn't near the front to do anything about it. i led out the field sprint and watched everyone come around me with 50 meters to go.

afterwards - beer and burgers!

highlight of the night - watching McKay take 3rd in a really nice sprint.

also - this guy Frias in the 3/4 race . . . he IS a total douche! i was working registration and he put up a gigantic whining fuss about being charged $5 for a new number after forgetting his original one from last week. after he was done moaning and thrashing, i asked him if he'd raced at floyd in previous season and he says, "all my LIFE!" at which point i tell him that he should remember from the past cycling seasons of his LIFE that we always use the same numbers at Floyd. predictably, homeboi left in a huff. i hope he falls into one of the composting toilets out there.
3rd actually. blown out by a "track star", who went from the corner, seated, to the finish.
i tried the same tactic as last week, which was, i sat in second wheel, and sucked on the wheel of one person in front, whoever it was, for pretty much the whole race. im not sure if this is a sensible thing, (poor form? rude to never take a pull?) but i didnt let anyone go for a break, and if i got left in front, i soft pedaled. a couple of times people complained that the race was boring, but i just stuck to my plan. i also discovered in the last two laps that if i was concerned about people breaking away, if i popped up to the front just before the corner and took it myself, it pretty much killed any chance of a break. in this way i felt like i was controlling the race. to a certain extent i found that i did quite a bit of work up front, chasing all the break attempts, despite not actually pulling in front, as i was most often in partial exposure and didnt really get a full recovery at any point. i knew that there were guys behind sitting in all fresh, but i was determined to have a good position going into the sprint. about halfway up the stretch before the turn into the sprint, though, the track guy started to put on speed, and i was left exposed on the wind side, so when the sprint came, i had only half gas left. to be honest, i feel like controlling the front of the race worked well, (given that the pace slowed down a lot when people figured out i wouldnt let them get away or work either) , but i cant really figure out how to control the beginning of the sprint. i have yet to feel that i was about to go at the right time, and hit the line at top speed rather than fading. looking at the 3/4 race, it looks like it is going so fast, without a solid leadout that you can trust, i cant imagine how anyone has anything left for a sprint if they managed to get themselves up front. i'm not looking forward to it all that much, but here it comes... that was my 10th cat 5.
Congratulations McKay and John! (I need a macro that just spits that out cause I'm getting tired of typing it Oh yeah and one for Mike on Thursdays too.)
P.S.-Welcome to the IVs imminently McKay.
Thanks Neil, appreciate the encouragement! (F1 Key).

Forgot to give props to Lance in the breaks and Tito for coming out for some hard work + filth + ricocheting stones.

@ McKay: Nice effort last night! My 5 cents re position: riding second wheel you are still sucking a lot of wind, third wheel or greater theoretically should leave you with more in the tank. Respecting that you made a plan and stuck to it! Great to hear you're joining the ranks of the numerous 4's!
Nice work guys! Get that jersey next week John!
John- My F1 is already set up to spit out..."Unfortunately I was shelled out the back at the first hint of an incline..." I'll find another key for the palmares for you guys.
