Adam and I stuck a seven-man break on the fifth of 10 long-course laps, but as I found out after crossing the finish line, there was another break up the road. Our break didn't work very well together. Guys taking long pulls, some complete MORON on Die Hard letting gaps open and randomly attacking instead of pulling. I yelled at him repeatedly, but I can only assume he must've been trying to block for someone up ahead in the winning break, which is kinda bullshit, no? Shouldn't he just stay at the back and not work? At any rate, with about 1k to go, I told Adam to get on a sprinter's wheel (we were basically the only two non-sprinters except Sergei from Hudson). A few seconds later, I attacked and stayed off the front until about 100m from the line, when Johan from United went flying by. Adam rode wheels to third or fourth in our break. Not bad at all considering the three or four sprinters with us. I took second-to-last ahead of the weird Die Hard guy. Painful race.
Congrats to John, who took home a spectacularly glorious trophy for the perfect attendance -- err -- overall sprint points, and thanks to Tito, Jules, Christian, Nosson, and Carl for blocking smartly back in the field.
Very fun race, nice to sew it up for JM. Jeff's plan was to sit in for the first 4 laps, then "double bomb" the field - ie: attack in twos, where one guy would be the booster rocket. Sadly the winning break went just before the end of the 4th lap. John M went with them so I sat up, and TIto, Nosson & I blocked like bitches at the front. I felt almost guilty at one point when we were three across. Soon enough Jeff & Adam were part of a second chase break, and that was pretty much that - we sat in the front, blocked, dragged the field up when it looked like a small group might be able to bridge and generally filled the remaining guys hearts with despair, sucking every morsel of hope out of their tired legs - ocasionally chatting a bit with Chris & Ernesto from NYVelo - both of whom valiantly Schlecked me over & over again on the front to no avail. Spoiler - they were both my teammates at the FBF TTT so there were no secrets - they knew they couldn't get away, but they tried anyway. Hats off to them for trying.
With one to go the Kaiser was on my wheel like a heat seeking missile and we wound it up for a little bit of the OLT (Orange Leadout Train) It was a bit more work than I wanted staying at the front for the whole last lap but I was NOT about to let the pack swarm us.
Final minute was 425 watts Final 30 seconds was 525 Dropped the Kaiser of (probably a little too close to the line) at just a hair over 31 mph
Not exactly Super Sonic, but a fun day at the races
Yeah, that was fun...i was kind of surprised during the race that so few people were attacking/bridging when the three of us were constantly blocking at the front, until I learned at the end that the leading break was a who's who of the strongest, fastest dudes in the series; not too many contenders left in the peleton. I learned a lot last night from Jules - my biggest problem with blocking at Floyd has always been to know what to let go and what to follow; Jules was awesome about showing how to let the first few go and then follow the train, and either get a break from the wind or get pulled up to the break. Good job, all! P.S. Sounds like Harry had 3rd place all sewn up in his last 5 race, but for a wicked divot in the road that made him crash out. He was in pretty high spirits, though, and made it out without any broken bones. Dude had a bike go over him, though, and he had a chain imprint on his neck. Yeah - his neck.
Thanks Jules. If you look very closely you'll see the little guy on the trophy is holding up a trophy of another little guy holding up an...
The guys VERY KINDLY failed to mention that I went total rogue (Rambo style) last night, ignoring the plan and attacking like crazy in the first four laps. When the winning move went, it was a counter to the break I was in with Speedwell's Vlad. I had just taken a pull and was pretty close to limit but had to go all-in as I new the fast disappearing train was a who's who of 3/4: Vlad, Lance, Paul (Axis), Bernie McGarry, Rob Brown Major Taylor, Gregg Lee (CRCA yellow), Dennis (Wonder Wheels). In hindsight I should have tightened my bandana and shouted to Jules and co. to get on board, but the window was small and I just had time to react. I got across to them and it was surge, surge, gap, surge and I was in the midst of a phenomenal blow-up when some crap flew in my eye. From there it was just one huge FAIL back through the break with Adam and Jeff and then the pack (which Jules was herding like an English sheep dog). I recommend you do not use endurox to flush out your eye. Apologies to the crew for going off script.
Floyd lesson: you have to, have to, be top ten to be ready for this stuff. Fellas who are riding Thursday, if your lungs are burning and you see a BH or an Axis or a Lance go, then you need to jump on board or bridge.
Thanks all for all the good times in the series. Jan, Stéphane, Wojciech, Adam, Jules, Rich, Jeff(s) and all the guys who helped me amass points with leadouts and breaks throughout this long-ass series, you guys rock!
@ Yacks. Thanks man. Just to reiterate, that jersey had your name on it. If it wasn't for that crash I'd have been riding for you. I would have been gutted though if I'd lost the Floyd jersey. As with PP series, I was away for the other double points races and that made it tight at the end.
Not sure I'll be doing CX, we'll see how it goes. Need a bike for starters (58cm'ish).
Oh, and yeah, I think I'd be up there for Biggest Loser Kissena... damn we should start one of those! AND biggest 30 minute Watt gainer!
It was good to get back in the saddle for a race. Been three weeks. Only pity was no other Kissenas to share in the fun in the I/II/III. I attacked from the gun and it hurt. Been a while since I felt that burn. After half a lap caught, but with a strung-out field. I was hoping the split would come early and I'd be on the right side of it. Turns out the field wasn't interested in escapes. the first four laps were brutal for me and I found myself hoping I could finish. Then, before I knew it we had the second prime sprint and the race was nearly over. I missed the winning split due to inattention, but it was good to get my racing back on. Found I even had good power on the way home, rolling up the west side bike path at 21mph most of the way.
Looks like Victor Chan got some really good shots of us. I always try and buy at least one digital image per race - 10 bucks seems like the least I can do to support him coming out every time.
