Kissena Gentleman's Event 2011 - Oct 9th is two weeks from now, Oct 22nd/23rd is four weeks from now (the other Oct weekends have MAC races).
Anyone want to make this happen ? My personal vote is Oct 9th , but later in the month would work as well (was looking at a Morris Plains NJ, Saratoga NY combo for the 22nd\23rd weekend) .

I like the idea. I won't be around on the 22nd-23rd, so there is a better chance I can make the 9th. May have to work that weekend.

I'm taking an informal poll; how could we celebrate KCC's 50th next year?

(I haven't had time to do a full-on survey monkey)

- Group ride (unsupported)
- Group ride (supported)
- Race(s) with bigger than usual prizes
- Unusual race(s)
- BBQ

I'd love to see (at a minimum) a group ride with all KCC members past & current - better yet in their original kits!
How cool would it be to do some interesting sanctioned races (TT over the brooklyn bridge & back?)

Could do a bike shop takeover and use Ride BK as a museum and set up old jersey's and photos like a gallery.

I would love to do some leg work to establish a Brooklyn Crit series. I know the idea of shutting down roads is a pain in the ass, but if we could get some corporate backers we could establish 3-4 crits around Brooklyn. Williamsburg, Redhook, Bed-Stuy, etc.

Big cash purse. women's fields. could be awesome.

Way at the north end of Greenpoint, there are some less busy streets and industrial areas that might be able to fit something like that in. I used to live up there and still jog around, and it's pretty dead in parts on the weekends.

And the fields would be big b/c the hilpsters wouldn't have to ride their bikes very far to get there! I'm being serious.

i'd be happy to volunteer to get some media coverage - it's what i do for a living. stories could easily be tied to one of the special events.

i really like the idea of a kissena museum @ RB and some kind of "Kissena past and present" ride like Jules suggested.

some other ideas (this is more fun than paying attention at the conference where i'm currently trapped)

- bring some "good purpose" to 50th anniversary - maybe co-host (w/Borough of Brooklyn or NYC Schools) a safe riding clinic in the park for underprivileged kids, or some other kind of "give back to the community" effort.....

- mark 50 year anniv. by recognizing the important relationship we have with prospect park.....maybe we work with prospect park alliance and all volunteer one weekend afternoon to help clean up/beautify the start/finish area? just thinking out loud. the latter could certainly help to strengthen relationships with the folks who run the home of many of our races...

- curate a 50-year-timeline of stories/anecdotes that can be slowly rolled out on FB and Twitter or the revamped K website, highlighting interesting moments/milestones/accomplishments in KCC history (i'm sure our more artistic teammates might even find a cool way of displaying it graphically - maybe plot points around a velodrome?)

- have a day designated as "kissena cycling club day" in brooklyn - this is easy enough to accomplish. not a huge deal, but might be nice to have it "officially" recognized by the clown prince of brooklyn himself.

- last one - maybe a bit far-fetched but it'd be fun to pull it off: approach one of the local breweries (6 point? kelso?) and see if they'd be interested to brew up a small batch, special edition "Kissena Cycling" ale....with the KCC 50th anniv. logo......beer & bikes - it's like hands and gloves!

All good ideas. The current sponsorship board members perhaps can take the beer idea & run with it.

I think the RB "museum" idea is pretty neat but a little daunting (they have a LOT of stuff) to move around.

I had the same thought re moving stuff at Ride Brookyln.
A KCC "museum" doesn't have to be in a bike shop though - there should be other spaces we could get. Keith's studio, a vacant store ("pop up shop" style), etc

I would also extend the "kissena cycling club day" from Brooklyn to Queens as well (Kissena park\velodrome anyone?) - or even shoot for a NYC wide proclamation .

Though as a kid growing up in Queens, I always LOVED Brooklyn\Queens day, we got a school day off while the other boros did not . Maybe Kissena Cycling Club Day should follow that lead.

We had a thread regarding a Kissena "gentlemen's ride" last fall - that could be interesting. Some sort of supported (hire a spouse or two to drive SAG waggons and man the food tables) club wide day of bad assery.

Greetings from my couch, lads. I wanted to send a quick update after the post about my health scare in one of the race threads last week. As i said, last Monday at the end of the new members ride my heart went into ventricular tachycardia - a dangerously fast, irregular heartbeat in which a "rogue" circuit in the bottom of the heart takes over the normal beating. It's all more complicated than that but that is the basic situation. This diagnosis has been quadruple confirmed. That I lasted as long as i did, without going into an even more dangerous fibrillation, I'm happy to say, is no doubt due in part to the fact that my heart has become strong and used to hard work from all of the training. Those early mornings paid off.....thanks Jim, Dan, Eric, Jeff C. etc.... We are still determining the underlying cause - I've had probably 6 invasive tests over the last week and will go for genetic tests next week. It's definitely electrical in nature - my cardiovascular system is otherwise in tip top shape - heart is strong, cholesterol is spot-on, arteries clear as a mountain spring. (That means: no dietary restrictions...WooHoo!!!) Regardless, in my case, there's no silver bullet cure or treatment - but this could happen again anytime, anyplace without warning. And if I am not close to an EMS/ER or there is some delay - well it could quickly go from close call to sayonara Dave. So on Monday, I had surgery to insert an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator in my chest/heart. If I go into v-tach again, it will first try to pace my heart back to a normal rhythm and if that fails, it will deliver a life-saving jolt.  I'll be living with it for the rest of my life, like a little hi-tech ER in my chest. It's a bummer, but the alternative is worse! I am home and resting now. Sore and a bit freaked out still, but mostly in good spirits and feeling good. I will be able to train again - eventually. Racing is something I'll have to decide down the line - it's not entirely off the table but I will of course make an informed decision before trying again. I'd be terribly disappointed to have to give it up so soon after discovering how much I love it - but it is what it is. I'm sure I can find other ways to stay involved if it's not to be. Thanks so much to everyone who sent well wishes, willingness to help (including offers to smuggle beer and porn into the hospital). It helped keep me feeling positive and just more examples of why Kissena is the best f'ing cycling club in NYC. I am planning to come up and watch some of the park race on Saturday. If anyone's interested - I'd be psyched to have folks swing by my crib after to watch the TdF Stage 19 ITT afterwards - I'll tape it that morning. See you on the road (eventually!!)

David, so glad that you're OK and that the sawbones have gotten to the root of the problem.  Seems like you're handling these new developments with an amazing amount of grace and humor, and you've set some safe and realistic goals for yourself.

Thanks all. Interesting to know other Kissenas (and pros) have dealt with this. My HR def went to 220 bom. The EKG looks like an earthquake. The ablation wasn't an option for me - yet. Typically ablutions occur inside the heart chamber itself and is a relatively low-risk procedure. The one spot they found to ablate on me was on the outside of my heart - apparently this is a far riskier proposition, and at this point the docs didn't think the risk is worth it given the current history. It's an option down-the-road. Have a few more tests to come to determine what, if any, other therapies might be explored. I'd be psyched and honored to do the D-Fib (new street name bestowed on me by a buddy) appreciation ride/pint lifting as soon as I'm spinning again. I'm taking it slow - no need to rush. In the meantime I'll be on the lookout for cheap goat hearts. I hear there is a market for them on Eastern Parkway.
