Injury: Sprains, Strains, Breaks & Insurance

Oh man @Marc, you have no idea how perfect GMSR would be for a "babymoon." Jess and I got married in Waitsfield, VT (3 years ago this fall) and have been meaning to go back and actually enjoy ourselves instead of rushing around like mad women making sure our guests were enjoying themselves. Unfortunately, the baby is due September 17th, so no racing (out of town, anyway) after Tokeneke for me. But that's a hilly one :)

@Craig, the Derby is already on the calendar, and this year I'm doing my homework: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/nathans-hot-dog-champ-joey-716629

Sweet!
Very sorry to hear this.  Can't believe the perp fled the scene.  That's still a felony, right?
Yes, it is. But only because she suffered serious physical injury.

I'd work on the getting out of the saddle, moving hand positions, stretching hands, and so on.  And I'd add riding rollers, as a tense upper body could the the basis for many a problem.
Update: got rollers from Jules (million thanks) and finally broke them in last night.  What fun!  I think they will help my balance (duh) a lot and make me more conscious of how much pressure I'm putting on my arms/hands.  After 5-10 shaky Bambi minutes I was able to mostly stop grabbing the wall for support and by the end of 30 I was able to switch pretty comfortably between hand positions (bars, hoods, drops) and go hands free for a few minutes at a time.  Had to figure out how to ignore the urge to stop at a wobble and instead look ahead and pedal through to correct it.  Kind of an aha moment!

In a couple sessions I'll give this girl a run for her money.

Rotator cuff tendonitis? I think I have it and have had it for about a month now. I've been icing and rolling my back/shoulder over trigger points ( I have two or three pretty intense ones) against the wall w a tennis ball. Anything else I should be doing(or not doing)?

It's my right shoulder so I'm a little worried about how it'll impact my cross game. It doesn't bother me so much mos tof the time...... until it bothers me unexpectedly eg little things like carrying the kettle from the stove to the french press coffee maker
Anti-inflam?
I'm already taking naproxen for my IT band knee issues. 2-4 pills a day

One of the the things I was wondering about was whether  I should be doing any exercises for it.....or resting it as completely as possible?
@Rick,

These with a very low resistance were useful for me when I had shoulder issues from swimming.  You can do them on your side with a weight if you don't have a light resistance band.

^ +1 You want to build these muscles.
Thanks Jules. I'll work on those.
Use the right tool for the job boys and girls. Cable snips for taking down CX fencing \ zip ties.

NOT YOUR BOX CUTTER. especially when tired after multiple days of labor.

Sliced into my left index finger enough to make it spurt blood everywhere but not enough to do any real damage. Marc cleaned it up and bandaged it and sent me on my way to the nearest urgent care or ER. Since it was night time in Rockland, I went to my Aunt's place nearby and she took me to the ER. 3 stiches and some Thai food later and all was well.

Ooooh, juicy. Man, Josh will do anything to get out of tear-down. I think we need to add "clippers" to the list of must buy tools, along with rakes, etc., for next year's Supercross.

Did they xray and give you a tetanus shot?

For the record, and it's useful to think about as you are personally considering whether or not to take thyself to a hospital/urgent care, the location of that injury, as well as the severity. In this case, there was no way that cut in THAT location was going to heal properly with simple pressure/elevation to stop the bleeding.

And if you are in a busy city, and they are available, consider going to an Urgent Care instead of an ER. The one, for example on the Upper West Side, is staffed by Mt. Sinai MDs and PAs who also do shifts in my ER, has all the facilities you would need for these kinds of things and is quick, and insurance Co-pays more in line with a doctor's office visit versus an ER visit.
I am recommending Shimano electronic front shifting...at least until that is fully healed...
Marc - no x-ray. They asked about tetanus but I had one 24 months ago so I was within the 5 year window and did not get a new shot
Our very own Josh "127 hours" Cesar.
Sorry I was unable to help you guys with this awesome event.
I don't like this discussion thread. . .

Jeff Apruzzese broke his pelvis riding in Prospect Park yesterday (Saturday) and posted on facebook he was going in for surgery.  I heard something about a pedestrian, but don't have any specific details.  Any news on what happened and how he's doing?

Jesus. What happened? Was it an in-race crash?
I don't know too may details, but what I heard was that he was cruising in park yesterday when a runner turned/ran into him.

Yikes. The park was so crowded yesterday, several close calls even at 6:45 in the morning during the race. Hope he's not in too much pain/taking all the meds they'll give him!
The doctors need to do a few more tests today so the surgery has been delayed until tomorrow.  Don't know any crash details.

Maybe they should ban running from Prospect Park.  So dangerous.

And you don't see any outrage from the NY Post.

I think the opposite, just don't ride fast in the park. The onus is on us not to hit pedestrians or inexperienced riders.

Even when racing.

I agree the onus is on us, but there is no evidence he was going fast. Sometimes a slow fall is worse than a fast one.

Either way it's a damn shame.
It is a damn shame.

I saw the bike. The seat and bars were way fucked. He was going fast. I heard it was on the downhill too.
Was in touch w jeff today- he's in high spirits and up at Cornell, feels good about the surgeon. So that's... Goodish.

went long on sat and did some recovery laps in pp yesterday. Not going fast at all, but still- definitely felt less safe than at this time in years past. Unbelievable number of zombies texting in the road.
Rough spring. Sounds like Etsu from FGX took a bad spill this weekend at Quabbin - hit a bottle on a downhill from what I can tell.

If you know him, wish him well on facebook.
We saw him down on one lap, in pain, in Prospect.
Ambulance working with him on the next lap.
3rd lap, he was gone.

This is his post on FB:
Thank you so much for all your concerns and warm messages. I crashed while racing in Prospect Park on Sunday morning. Hit a water bottle while going down hill. No way to avoid it given the speed and the size of the pack. Fractured clavicle, fractured rib which caused a punctured lung, and road rashes on the right side. I have a tube in the lung draining the blood out. I am no longer in major pain but uncomfortable especially the area around the tube and if I move my upper body too much. I expect to be released by Friday. Thank you again for your kind thoughts.
Ouch.
I heard from Rick this mroning, multiple rib fractures, a collapsed lung, and more seriously, a compression fracture in a vertebrae.

Hes in Kings Country ICU today.
