Get well soon Dave!

Paxlovid can make a brutal flu into a mild cold. Highly recommend.
Except for the awful metallic aftertaste, feel better Dave.

Yes, the mouthfull of pennies taste is rough.
Went out immediately and got a script for Paxlovid - the urgent care doctor (I'm old school so I actually went to a facility in the hood) was the same who checked me out when I had a broken wrist in 2021! Can confirm, mouth tastes like I was snacking on subway tokens with Paxlovid. Otherwise feel 90% there. Outside of feeling a bit weak and a tickle in my throat, I think the drugs worked!

Highly recommend, 10/10.

JP, I caught up on some sports docs including the story behind And1 (didn't talk enough about the A&M ending), Beckham (way better than expected) and Cavendish (did not expect it to be about mental health).

Feel better Dave! Not my experience, but my FIL took Paxlovid, got to like 95% better and returned to normal life and ended up having a bad rebound case so even if you're feeling better, keep up with all of the other medicines/routines you've been using to get better until you're back to 100%
Late response to Richard: I had similar knee issues 12 to 24 months ago when using the red (no float) SPD-SL cleats. It was particularly noticeable on my track bike. I switched to blue cleats and then to yellow for maximum float and adjusted my seat height and that pain went away very quickly. I think the lack of float must have been putting my knee through too much tension.
Another two interesting pick-ups from the Bike New York Expo come courtesy of Dan Flanzig, of New York bike Lawyers.  The first is a card to either keep in a wallet or have an image of on your phone.  It's what to do after a crash/accident.  The second is a literal handbook on legal issues that arise from crashes.  The Handbook can be downloaded form the New York Bike Lawyers website.

Last few weeks have been less than ideal.

My wife and I both got Covid. I still have a cough and congestion but had chills and fever for a day or two. My wife got it first and had several days of fever. We’ve both taken Paxlovid and I hope to be back on the bike soon.

In other news I learned that I need to have part of my thyroid removed this month as there is a 70% chance I have thyroid cancer. From what I understand this is slow growing and treatable. I’m optimistic that I’ll get through this fine, but having doctor’s visits take center stage the next few weeks (rather than all the other things I’d rather be doing) is a bummer.

Ironically, prior to this I was starting to feel closer to some of my pre-heart valve surgery fitness coming back. Oh well

Oy!  Less than ideal is an understatement.

And your fitness had seemed pretty good, at least when you came out to play.  At least the CAstelli Cup series is on a brief hiatus.  You can come back for that as your first peak before 'cross season.

Ditto to what JP said: less than ideal is definitely an understatement!  I'm hoping you get recovered soon and got my fingers crossed the thyroid diagnosis turns out better.
Ah Pat, sorry to hear. Sending good vibes and thoughts your way!
All the best Patrick. In Dutch we would use somewhat stronger terms than ‘less than ideal’ for this
That's a kick in the nuts. Sorry to hear it.
Patrick,
I’m sorry hearing about your health issues, however we’re lucky to be close to excellent doctors who can come up with the best treatment options for your condition. I wish you all the best.

Patrick, wishing you a speedy recovery and treatment ahead. We’re here for you
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Patrick!
Sorry to hear Patrick. That's rough. I hope the treatment goes really well and you are back on the bike again soon mate.
I had my Thyroid surgery last week. The surgery itself went fine. Certainly less invasive than other surgical procedures, but between the anesthesia and being intubated, for the first couple of days I felt like I had strep throat and a really tight neck. Once these passed I was able to do some indoor riding, but have to sit upright as I had a tightness in the front of my neck that feels like I am carrying a bowling ball on my neck. This is slowly getting better.

Today I met with my surgeon and got the all clear. The pathology was benign, which ironically means that I didn’t actually need the surgery… but then again, it’s better to be safe than sorry. The other good news is that she gave me the all clear to get back on the bike, although she thought that the anesthesia and recovery from the surgery would set me back a bit. She did tell me not to crash. I didn’t mention that I had just watched Remco and friends crash in the Dauphiné hours earlier

That is the best possible outcome, all things considered! Congratulations and a nice glass of scotch are in order :)
Awesome news Patrick, glad to hear it and look forward to seeing you back out on the road soon.
Glad to hear it Patrick!
Great to hear Patrick!! Looking forward to riding and what cyclocross will bring!!
Cross is coming !!! i swear it gets earlier every year :)
Great to hear, hope the bowling ball shrinks quickly!
Glad to hear Pat!
Most excellent, that's the best news.
We are all so relieved Pat! Lovely news.
checking in from Hackensack hospital.

on Wednesday, I hit a concrete barrier. broke my collarbone, shoulder blade and five ribs. they inserted a titanium plate (very pro) to stabilize the collarbone. ill be here until the chest tube comes out.

I know max went through something similar recently. wanted to show all how to go big.

if anyone has experience with this plate insertion business, id love to hear fro them. on list, dm, phone,

(typing with one hand is another challenge these days)

Ouch, sorry to hear JP, feel better soon!
