@BenFinoRadin You know Jay Z? I've been friendly with him since we put the hurt on one another at Bear Mountain last year. Raced with him in Prospect as a Cat 5 and then saw him throughout cyclocross season as well. We always exchange pleasantries when we see one another at a race. He's strong on various terrains, a reliable handler, and seems affable. Now that I know he's interested in joining, I'll drop some hints when I see him next.
I've never done well in a race from a break, I don't have a lot of experience with that way of racing.  So when I got into this break, I didn't really know what to do and mistakenly thought (1) I saw the field approaching--either they were really far or I mistook a smaller group of briding guys for the field; (2) the group would just catch the break.

Anyway, here's How Not to Win a Bicycle Race in 4 Minutes, which is about how long I was in the move before dropping back.

Ouch Brendan that hurt to watch. I find the lessons I pay most dearly for are the ones that I learn the most from. This one looks like a doozy.
@Brendan looks to me that you hammered 1 minute 400ish (a ton of watts for your weight), then the group kicked over you on other side of road (not nice). To reconnect with the back ≈ 10sec @ 500 ≈ near anaerobic, this is not a good place to be when fresh legs are coming over in bridging moves and you don't yet have a measure of who's in the break.

Next time I suggest you try rolling through, max 10 secs on the front. Keep the long efforts for: establishing a break; working for a teammate; leading out; bridging; long two-up breakaways. Short pulls in a rotating paceline are faster than long efforts (provided everyone is taking their turn, putting out similar watts and in a tight formation). It's easy to fall into trap of believing you're Turbo Durbo and can match a Cat1 in terms of fitness and tactics, unfortunately, they're going to eat your lunch any chance they can get.

with the camera on your chest and those blinking lights from your Wahoo computer....I'm having Twiki flashbacks

Stop giving Brendan ideas Mr Yacks.
Damn son, that was brutal.
@Brendan Rigby
Malcolmson hits on a number of good points.  I'll try add a few to it.

on the descent, when the Veselka guy got into the tuck, he gave you enough room to go around him.  I think you should have gone through quickly, taken a 10-20s pull, and gotten off.  This would have been not only faster (slingshotting), but could have inspired your fellow break mates to do the same.  When you came through on the flats, you probably should have not only taken a shorter pull, but should have led the group to the right side of the road. At that point in the course, it veers to the right, and I think the shorter line there is farther to your right.  that they came around you as far to the right as they did suggests that's what they were thinking.

John's right that getting back on after a minute at 400w is hard, especially when it looks like your heart rate is topped out.  But a quick look under your shoulder and quickly getting out of the saddle might have helped.  (writing it is easier than thinking it when you're at 178bpm)

In terms of training benefit, it's interesting to see that your HR went higher as you climbed the hill that lap even though your power was lower.  I think you might have had the legs to stick on the group had you been ready for the hurt.  And that's a good thing for next time.

Reg'd in 4 for Saturday!
Hi all – fun news!

We are switching things up a bit (ok – a lot) this weekend for the Meet Kissena Ride.

Prospective members will be coming to watch the race finish at 7:45 am, and then joining for some chill laps afterwards.

Deets here: http://us6.campaign-archive1.com/?u=7107f77b475374b976bed0bb2&id=4ac32b99a2

** important ** can I get a volunteer who is either racing or volunteering to lead the ride? All that means is you A) give a brief pitch about the club B) take attendance (I give you a list to check) and C) let me know who showed up and if they are OK to join.

DM me if you're interested
Reg'd for CAT5 on Sat Legoooo...not going to be checking the weather forecast. Please no spoilers...
Yack's is in Port Chester Saturday for conferences....enjoy the piss pouring rain for another weekend lads
I'll be there

Any others joining in the 1/2/3 fun?

Brendan keep that giant Wahoo computer as it puts those monstrous, bulbous hydraulic filled brake hoods in proportion
