Mentoring

Marc- thanks for the trainings on sat and sunday; v helpfull. Can you pls let me know where the "secret alpine" climb is you mentioned..?

My pleasure. You win the prize for making it to both events! I'll have to show you that climb some day on the bike because I don't really know the street names and there are a few fussy turns. It's pretty a pretty cool stair stepping adventure, that provides opportunities, on the flatter bits, for the rolleurs to come back to the fold.

Marc, show me too!

I want to thank everyone who participated in my mentoring events the last few weekends. Hopefully between them, JP's tactic talks and either racing, spectating or both at Grant's Tomb, you've picked up and retained a  few tips that will stick in your head for the next time you suit up for racing.

My next formal mentoring event will occur in early to mid-May, as we are gearing up for the Memorial Day weekend criterium races in New Jersey.

This year, my Criterium Workshop will again occur at Rockleigh business park and focus on bike handling skills and drills. That is prepare to take that corner at race speed over and over and over again. For those of you who have attended in the past, there will be a few familiar elements (including the end of workshop practice race) as well as new stuff too.

For the advance planners in the bunch, I typically try to do this on a Sunday, so those who have already carved out space in their life for a group ride, don't have to re-adjust too much.

In between now and then, however, keep an eye on the message board for more spur of the moment opportunities to ride/train with me and the other mentors. We'll be at the Park Races for pre and post race chats/breakdowns, for example. We'll be leading group rides here and there where "brain picking" is always highly encouraged.

Thanks again, see you on the road!
As the director of rider development, I'm the guy who helps coordinate the clinics and coaching and talks this year.

I'm looking to see if people have things they're looking for help on or  if people have ideas of things they themselves would like to do.

On the good side, I've gotten some help and should have a calendar set up soon and we'll add to it as the season goes on.

Our quiet track giant, Kieran Leahy has a plan for the track.  will get that out soon.

As you can see from above, Marc has crit workshops planned.

There will be morning training rides in Prospect.  Longer rides in Long Island.  Cyclocross talks and clinics as that season approaches.  Race recons in Prospect is also up.

let me know, either on list or off.

Here the prospect park recon:

Hi Folks,

Prospect Park racing is coming soon:

The next 2 Fridays (March 15th and 22nd) I'm going to lead rides focused on learning the ins and outs of racing in Prospect.

I'll shoot for a 4:45 PM start time at Grand Army Plaza, and will be riding until at least 6:45. I know not everyone can get out of work that early so you're welcome to get there when you can.

I'd love it if some experienced prospect racers joined us. I'm sure there will be some questions that only former green jersey winners can answer.

Joe Ng and I did some impromptu bumping practice this weekend on the New Member ride.  I'd love to see a little of that on the grass for our newer riders - or those who would just like to freshen up their skillz
Great idea.  Want some dry conditions as we'll do it on the grass.
Already working on bumping drills.
Bump and grind?
Aww shit. R Kelly Hubbard is in the house.
I've got a suggestion for mentoring and new member development. Last year KCC and CRCA put on an intro to racing clinic / race in CP that Thierry and I both did and found useful. How about we put one on solo this year in PP? We could use the first L&C race Cat 5 field as the clinic. First lap neutralized while mentors ride along and provide general course and rule guidance (e.g. stay out of joggers lane) and then continue with the field for the balance of the race, continuing to provide guidance throughout. I can see Marc yelling Socratic questions like "Is that the move?" "Do you want to bridge?"

I don't think there is a lot of effort to put it on. We'd have to coordinate with Charlie and the marshals and print up some flyers for bike shops and promote it online. Mentors would have to come up with an outline of things to discuss during the neutral lap and during the race.

I think the big question mark here would be Charlie. But I'd be up for it. One thing I recall from not only last year's KCC/CRCA joint event, plus my own CP course recon a few weeks ago, is that talking/mentoring while riding/racing can get tricky. I speak pretty loudly, but I'm pretty sure there are many times when folks still have trouble hearing.

In other mentoring "news," I rode out to the Rockleigh Criterium course yesterday and devised some diabolical new bike handling drills (to add to favorites from year's past) for this year's criterium workshop.

I've been promised gift cards to Ride Brooklyn as prizes this year!

I'm really looking forward to this event...I hope you are too!

The KCC/CRCA mentored event worked well because there were several  of us chaperoning the cat 5 field. The first lap was chill, but then the field split during the next lap (or two?). The mentors split up also, so that people continued to get feedback at race speed. I'm not sure everyone got a consist message, but I'm pretty sure most people received some kind of feedback, and most seemed to really appreciate it. Even just knowing what was going on in the race was helpful. 5 mentors in a field of 50 should be pretty effective. And perhaps the mentors could actually coordinate the message in advance.

Hi all,

As nicely introduced by JP above, I’m the club’s new track mentor. I thought I’d take the opportunity to a) (re-)introduce myself and b) lay out what I’m hoping to do this year as a mentor, in terms of organized events and general things I can offer. In short (had to put this into 3 parts!), I noticed in my first year with the club last year that while there was less active participation on the track at KCC than I’d expected, there are enough riders who are keen to explore it for the first time, re-kindle their enthusiasm for it after a few seasons off it or are already experienced trackies, and that’s what I’m hoping to tap into and develop.

As a few of you will already know, I’m a fairly experienced track rider from the UK / Ireland (I moved to NYC last summer) and used to be a serious track sprinter, having raced internationally for a couple of seasons.  After “retiring” in 2008, I started racing again in 2011. Alas I’m a shadow of my former pre-retirement self, but train enough to be competitive at a regional level (and to occasionally kid myself I could be really good again). It’s nice to have the opportunity share some of my experience with others – and it will also be a good chance for me to develop!

Here’s the three main goals for the track program for 2013:

1. Increase awareness and participation of Kissena riders in track racing and training at Kissena velodrome

      2. Increase participation and visibility of Kissena riders in NYS track races. E.g. aim for a team of at least six riders at NYS champs, up from three in 2012.

      3. Win five medals + at NYS champs in July, up from three in 2012.

(part one)

(part two)

Proposed provisional program to help achieve the above:

1.      Beginners track day –– Sat, 2-4 weeks before Kissena Spring Classic on May 12. Aimed at absolute beginners on track. Using loan bikes to learn how to ride the basics of track riding safely, introduction to track racing (types of events, disciplines), advertise “why” track racing and a few mock races.

2.      Track day – intermediate – Sun, day after the above, 2-3 weeks before Kissena opening weekend, 5/12. Aimed at riders with some track experience but rusty – goal of refreshing skills, drills, mock race exercises, esp for riders aiming to ride opening weekend. Beginners who “graduate” from Sat’s ride can ride the Sun. *update - looks like the Pink Rhino guys are planning something similar on these dates, I'll work out what's best - I may just fold the two above events into one. Great start on my part I must say.*

3.      Kissena track opening weekend – 5/12 – available for race guidance, prep, tactics. Post-race debrief. Assuming I can still stand / speak.

4.      Track sprint skillz session – both for trackies who’d like to know more or specialise in sprinting and road guys looking to improve their sprint. Will include run through of sprint races, different skills in each (match sprint v keirin v team sprint v kilo), typical sprinting attributes, sprint drills (flying efforts, standing efforts, difference in each, on diff gears), match sprint tactics,  mock races  – tbd, one weekend in June

5.      Pre-pre NYS champs talk / training day @ either Ride Brooklyn or the track – 1 month before circa early July – aimed at raising enthusiasm for the champs / first look at the events – what to aim for, possible medal events.

6.      Pre-NYS champs training – 2 weeks before champs on 8/11 @ track. Race specific efforts for participants.

7.      NYS champs – provisional date 8/11 - available for race guidance, prep, tactics. Post-race debrief.

I’d also like to organize either training or participation in racing at T-Town – I know a few guys were up for doing this last year - but this is dependent on a) transportation, b) schedule and c) calendar
(part three)

The program is very calendar dependent at the moment. The last time I checked, the track calendar is very scant – only two races scheduled so far. If more races become scheduled, then I’d be up for holding specific training for those, e.g. if a keirin race series came up again (as in 2010 I think), session either at track or Ride Brooklyn on how to ride keirins, tactics etc.

The NY State champs-centric part of the program is partly due to the above (i.e. lack of lots of races here) and it’s also a nice level to aim at – from my first time riding it last year, the standard was challenging, but by no means crazy hard and is accessible to riders with good road fitness. It will be a result in itself to get a nice large team of us there participating (there were three of us last year), but last year JP wiped the floor and grabbed gold in two of the 1/2/3 group races and I took silver in the men’s 1/2/3 sprint, so I think equalling that plus two more is more than reachable :)

Other services I can offer: training advice – weights, sprint drills, race prep, psychology. Feel free to contact me either through PM on here or kieranleahy67 at hotmail.com.

What I can’t offer – any support at the Wednesday track league (though I might try and get to one or two, boss permitting); driving to races.

Any comments / critique / support welcome. I’m by no means a know-it-all when it comes to doing something like this, so I’d definitely appreciate your support in helping to make the program work – either if you’re an experienced trackie that wants to impart your experience to others or looking to get back into / try out track for the first time. I also I confess I’ve not been a particularly visible club member at times so far – not least as I rarely make it out on group road rides (aka the loneliness of the short distance track rider / lazy b@stard) – so feel free to msg me / generally harass me to ensure that I am!

I’ll post something shortly about the beginners/intermediate track day in April and start trying to firm up some of the other dates once I get my shiz together further.

Cheers,

Kieran

One note Keiran, there is the Wednesday night Twilight series that Alan Atwood runs at Kissena velodrome. It usually runs from late April to early August every Wednseday evening. That is when most of the track racing seems to take place in the city. You're seeing the state champ and opening weekend races, on the calendar currently.
There is also the Labor Day Track day on the last weekend in August.
Thanks Dan, sorry - by "Wednesday track league" I refer to in the final part I meant the Twilight Series. My problem with that is I can't make them without leaving work two hours early so like I say, I can't offer much support. Series like that are really good for building skills and track speed and more than happy to offer advice where I can from afar (and great if anyone will race them with an eye on winning them overall too of course, tho I've always been a big one-day meet kinda guy in terms of aiming towards things.)

Good call on the Labor Day meet.

Kieran, glad to hear you've joined the mentals...I mean mentors. Good timing on your goals and my general waning level of enthusiasm for the road racing scene in the New England/Mid Atlantic regions, because I lugged back my track bike from ye olde home town, where I used to race track twice a week (Northbrook and Kenosha). It's been about 10 years, but after getting some new tubies glued up by someone other than me, I'm looking forward to racing the track once again.

But for me, it's going to have to be T-town on the weekends (I think cat 3/4s and Masters race then) because that will be the only time I'll be able to get out to a track. And if the state champs are on a weekend, then I'll have to see what I can do there.

Related to that...JP raced the track exactly once last year and scored two gold medals? Man, that dude needs to work on his bragging/facebooking skills clearly. I think I'll add Facebook Bragging to my Mentor workshops this year.
@Marc Bertucco

I see some masters at t-town together this year. Schweet...
@kieranleahy , track racing interests me and I was beginning to write this opportunity off as inaccessible to me, b/c I've never actually ridden/owned a track bike, until you mentioned "loan bikes" for the beginner's day ....

please elaborate

i might want to at least introduce myself to the possibility of track racing
Bump. Prospect park recon tomorrow. 4:45-6:45 come whenever you can get there.
Edwin Ortiz (and all)
There is a small fleet of loaner bikes at the Kissena park velodrome. If you are interested in learning more we can arrange to get you access to them. You should bring your own shoes and pedals to use. If you ride out on your road bike we should be able to swap them over. The bikes are locked up but we can get access to them for special events and during the Wed night race series.

As details get more worked out we will put up a poll to find out who needs bikes.

kieranleahy - maybe this should branch out into it's own thread ?

@edwin i have a spare track bike i can bring out.

@JoshuaC , that would be great, keep us updated. i would def come out

@Wilson Goode , Thanks for the offer! I can fit a 54 maybe 56. let me know if you have these sizes
i have a 59 with a long ass stem so i don't think it'll work

ha! thanks anyway, will probably have to settle for the loaners
