Fun race. I did it...two years ago? Lots of climbing, but nothing that will make you cry.

So Pawling climbs a little over 2500' in 40 miles, while this race climbs 4000' in 44 miles. I will not be racing this.

But they aren't as steep. Looks like the finish is an 8-10 minute Alpine-esque climb

Yeah, it's more climbing overall but no individual climb is as challenging as the first one at Pawling. IIRC, more suited to recovery and to attacking.

the climbs are way shallower at tokeneke than at B'kill or Pawling

Not a specialist's course but I wouldn't really say Pawling is either. That final 2m climb isn't steep but it turns into a real bitch. Really good race. I'll probably go.

this is a great race
the final climb is a power climb - not steep enough to weed out the mid-sized diesels
some great descending here, too - i had a blast last year, even though i cramped and got dropped at the end

I know, was about to sign up. Fortunately, I might be able to contribute something to help and also the volunteer 'field' on bikereg.com is now only 5 places short of completion. I think it will be a go. And I will race it!

that is a huge shame
i think that we, as the regions most legit and upstanding club, should organize a Community Service day, much like the blue chips do, during which we volunteer at a local race that's NOT our own.
i bet if we had something like this, Tokeneke would still be happening, and maybe Tour of Conn would still be extant.

@ WDS I agree, however we would be best served to pick the races that we support carefully so as to have maximum benefit. If we'd reached out to the Tokeneke guys earlier perhaps they could have leaned on our "guarantee" of several volunteers. I feel like the floor fell out of this one pretty quickly.

@WilliamDC that is a good idea. Like Jules said we'd need to do some advance planning and not try to do this at the last minute.

This was not our responsibility. This was the Connecticut state championship.
Also, not overly convinced this was about volunteers. By the time they cancelled they had 19 registered volunteers on Bikereg.com. They set their own field limit at 20. Furthermore, I emailed them offering assistance (as per their request on their notice) and I received no response. Not what you'd expect if the only thing stopping the race is a lack of helping hands.
I think there were probably other factors at play here. Probably money (I checked the pre-reg last week and there were people registered but nowhere near capacity).

@ Adam: possibly, but the idea still has merit - pick a couple of big races we want to support and support them properly.

last week i rode past about 9,000 people from Moody's weeding in Riverside Park. it got me thinking about some kind of volunteer opportunity that Kissena's could do to [further] give back to the cycling scene, and if races are ever in a tight spot because of LACK of volunteers, this would be a great thing.
and guys . . . we could make T-Shirts!!!

basically, pick the highest-profile race with the msot problems and offer them suggestions & the man power to implement said suggestions. talk about putting your $ where your () is.
